“Mine too.”

“Come on, you guys! It’s melting.”

The tray had three bowls of vanilla ice cream with side dishes containing all the fixings.

“I’ll make them,” Scotty said.

“Ladies first,” Nick said.

Sam considered her options. “I’ll have caramel, nuts, M&Ms, whipped cream and a cherry on top.”

Scotty made the sundae and presented it to her with a flourish.

“Thank you, sir.”

“Nick?”

“Make it a double.”

Scotty made Nick’s and then covered his own ice cream with caramel, hot fudge, sprinkles, M&Ms, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry. He brought his full-to-overflowing bowl to the sofa and plopped down between them.

“I believe this calls for a toast,” Sam said, holding up her bowl.

Scotty flashed the grin that so reminded Sam of Nick and held up his bowl, getting into the spirit of things.

“To the Cappuano family,” she said, gazing into Nick’s gorgeous eyes.

“Hear, hear,” Nick said, as he clinked his bowl against theirs. He looked happier than she’d ever seen him. Knowing Scotty would be staying for good was a big load off their minds and hearts.

“Hear, hear,” Scotty said, taking his lead from Nick, as always.

Sam hadn’t yet been able to give Nick the baby they both wanted so badly, but now he had the family he’d never had before. It was a start.
