Jaxx
was by my side in a flash of moonlight. “What has happened?”
“My dumb ass fell dow
n the stairs and I can’t fix me,” I mumbled at him with silent tears streaming down my face.
“Here
, take my hand. Breathe deep. Now try.” When it doesn’t work right away, he knew I was getting agitated again. “Concentrate, Ella. Clear your head.”
I
did as I was told and gripped his hand tightly. I felt the tingling start in my palm, the heat radiating in my chest traveling down my arm, and I touched my right hand to my left wrist. The pain disappeared almost instantly. I repeated the process with my ankle.
“Hmm
, I guess we have to be linked to heal ourselves.”
“Good to know,” I said
as I jumped up and grabbed his hand, taking off at a run for the front door.
Chapter Eleven
And My World Shatters
We all loaded into Seb’s spacious Lexus and hauled ass all the way to the main Emergency entrance of the Hospital. I was out of the car and running through the doors before the car even fully stopped. I abruptly halted at the nurse’s station.
“Jessa
Carpender,” I said to the lady behind the counter.
“Honey, she’s in ICU, on the fourth floor,” she replied after looking it up on the computer.
By the time I had that information everyone had caught up to me. Jaxx twined
his fingers in mine as we sprinted side by side to the elevators. While we were waiting, Jaxx tried to calm me down.
“Baby
, you have to calm yourself. You are wreaking havoc all around us,” he urged me to see what was happening around us.
I look
ed around and finally noticed that the windows at the front entrance were rattling and the ground beneath our feet was quaking. People all around us were running to take cover in doorways and under tables, yelling that there was an earthquake.
“Deep breaths,” Seb whispered in my ear as Gavin reached
for my free hand.
The united front they had
cocooned me in was working. I could feel myself calming. I took a deep breath and looked at them. “I’m okay now, I think, just stay close. I still don’t feel totally in control of myself.”
The elevator doors ding
ed and swooshed open. We entered and took what seemed like an endless ride to the fourth floor. When the doors swooshed back open, I was out of them like a shot. Only this time I was not alone, Jaxx had me shackled to his side. As we enter the ICU wing I saw Devon sitting in a chair with his head in his hands.
He looked up as if he felt me walk into the room, and h
e was out of his seat, rushing to me. He flung himself into my arms and broke. He was sobbing so loudly that the nursing staff was looking at us worriedly.
“
Shhhhhhh, baby boy, it’s going to be okay.” I looked around and noticed that Gavin and Seb had taken up seats close to where we were standing. Jaxx was rubbing circles on Devon’s back, trying to give him comfort. In that moment I loved him even more.
“She
is strong, Devon. She is going to be okay.” After what seemed like hours he finally calmed down enough to tell us what he knew.
“I talked to her mom when I first got here. She said that she somehow lost control of her car and rammed straight into a tree. They had to cut her out of the car
, Ells.” He started to sob again.
I led him over to a chair and sat him down. I took
the seat beside him and put my arm around him. I looked over at Jaxx and he nodded at me. He strode from the waiting room to find out if he could get an update from anyone.
When Jaxx returned, he frowned and shook
his head no. I slumped. He took my hand into his and we waited. We waited for hours with nothing but silence to keep us company. Seb and Gavin took turns going to get all of us coffee and snacks. Finally I spotted Jessa’s mom when she slowly walked into the waiting room. She looked like the life had been leaked out of her. She had aged at least ten years since I’d last seen her.
Devon and I jump
ed from our seats at the same time and hurried to her. We each took a hand and led her to my vacated chair. She looked up at us both with glassy eyes. I wondered where her husband was. I knew that Jessa and her mom were alone a lot since her father traveled for work, but shouldn’t he be there for this?
“She has a back injury. She
is in surgery right now. That’s all I know. Something went wrong with her car. I talked to the police and they told me that the brakes were bad. That she couldn’t have stopped even if she wanted too.”
Devon and I both share
d a look. It was the exact same thing that happened to Carly Stevens last year. Only this time it was personal. Sabrina was one dead cunt. I felt the rage building inside of me. The walls and ground below our feet started to shake again.
“Everyone
has been saying that there have been a series of earthquakes this morning. How odd,” Jessa’s mom said.
I start
ed taking deep breaths and reached for Jaxx’s hand. I snuggled into his side. Trying not to think of what was going to be left of Sabrina when I got through with the hag.
I look
ed around the waiting room, and finally introduce Devon and Jessa’s mother, Martha, to my newly found family.
“This
is Jaxx, my boyfriend,” I introduced Jessa’s mom first since Devon already knew him. Then I pointed to Seb and Gavin.
“And the guys sitting across the room are my twin brother
, Gavin, who recently located me,” I began, and Devon looked shocked at the news, but stayed mute. It wasn’t the time for explanations and so I continued as Seb walked over to stand next to Jaxx and me, “This is Sebastian. Seb for short, he’s my cousin.” I looked at him with love. Seb nodded his head at Martha and Devon, shook their hands and then retook his seat across the room. I glanced over to Martha. “Do you know when there will be anymore news?”
“No
, sweetie. She will be in surgery for quite a while. When she is out the doctor will come here to give us the results.”
I slump
ed into my seat and cuddled into Jaxx. I put my head in my hands and started to pray. I had never prayed in my life, not even growing up with a Pastor for a father. I still never believed in anything bigger than me watching over everyone, but now I prayed. I prayed for Jessa to make it through the surgery. I prayed to anyone out there that might be listening. I just wanted her to be okay, whole and healthy enough to help me dismember the cunt that did this to her. I must have nodded off because the next thing I knew Jaxx was shaking me awake. I was dozing leaning on his shoulder.
When I blearily look
ed around I saw that Martha and her husband were talking to a surgeon. I sat up straight and Jaxx had to restrain me from running over and asking questions of my own. Martha turned to everyone in the room. “Please, we are all family, we all love Jessa. Please just tell us how she is. What is her condition?” she said.
We all gather
ed around the doctor and looked at him expectantly. He ran his fingers through his hair nervously. That couldn’t be a good sign. He looked to Martha and began to speak. “Your daughter made it through surgery just fine, but we won’t know how serious the injuries to her spine are until the swelling goes down. Serious spinal cord injuries resulting from auto accidents can lead to significant nerve damage and potentially cause paralysis, muscle dystrophy, autonomic, involuntary nervous system, disturbances and/or loss of reflex function.”
Martha slumped
into her husband’s arms, looking as if she were about to faint. Tears were streaming down Jessa’s father, Tom’s face. I felt nothing. I was numb. I was still latched to Jaxx’s side. I think he feared that if I let my emotions get the best of me I would turn the hospital and everyone in it to rubble.
“Will my baby be able to walk? Will s
he be normal again?” Martha begged the doctor for good news.
“We just don’t have any answers at this point. We will know more by tomorrow when the swelling
is down.”
“When will we be able
to see her?” I had an idea brewing in my head.
I could heal her. I know that I can.
My world had shattered when I found out Jessa was hurt, but I could fix this. It was my fault. I may not have started or caused it, but Sabrina was gunning for me. Jessa got hurt because of that.
Jaxx looked
at me with glowing ice eyes. I sometimes forgot that Norms couldn’t see the lights that we radiate. He knew what I was thinking.
“You may go into her room one at a time for now
, but you must not disturb her. She needs her rest,” the doctor said then quickly left the room as if the hounds of hell were nipping his ass.
“Ponce
,” Seb muttered from behind me. I couldn’t help but chuckle at that. Tom looked at me like I was demented for laughing at a time like that, but he and Devon didn’t know what we could do. I was going to fix her.
We wait
ed in the same chairs we had been sitting in all day. Playing another waiting game until it was my turn to see Jessa. Her parents had been in and out of her room for hours now, hoping in vain that she would wake. Finally Martha walked into the waiting room alone.
“You can go in now
, Devon. Tom has to get back on the road for work. After you are done, Ella can have a turn to see her, but you must be quick. I don’t want to be away from my baby for long.” She slumped into a seat across from me and passed out almost immediately. The day must have finally caught up with her.
Devon reached for me and hugged
me tight. “I’ll be quick. I know you want to see her as much as I do.” Then he quit the room at a trot. If he only knew what was going to happen when I was finally alone with Jessa, he wouldn’t have made me wait until he was done. It took about ten minutes for Devon to make it back to the waiting room. I sat up and pulled out of Jaxx’s arms. Seb and Gavin had already returned to Jaxx’s house for the night. There was nothing they could have done here.
“Walk with me. I need you to stand outside the room so
I’m not interrupted,” I whispered in his ear. He nodded and we once again walked down the hall hands entwined.
When
we made it to the door of Jessa’s room, I reached up and brushed my lips across his.
“I love you more than life,” I said
quietly.
He pulled
me to him tightly and deeply devoured my mouth. I drew strength from his embrace. He was my lifeline in this place. “I love you too, pretty eyes. Please be quick. I want to get you home as soon as possible.”
I could
tell from the glint in his eyes that he needed a reminder that we were both alive and well as much as I did. I entered Jessa’s room and found that she was not alone. Seb was standing next to her bed looking down at her intently. I was so startled to see anyone that I yelped.
“Shh, little niece,
I’m just getting a look at my bride,” Seb said as quietly as he could.
When I
looked at him blankly he continued.
“You
see, once in a Vampire’s long existence, we find our destined bride. I had no idea that you would be the one to lead me to her. I was stalking the hallways looking for the blood bank in this ghastly place and I caught her essence.”
I
moved over to the bed and grabbed his hand. I could see the look of adoration on his face, as well as the sadness in his eyes. “Seb I can heal her. You don’t have to worry. She’s going to be fine.”
“There
is no need to use your unique gifts here. I will heal her, as is my right, for she is mine.” With that cumfuggled, confusing statement he brought his wrist to his mouth.
I
saw his fangs slide down out of his gums and he bit into his flesh. Blood began to flow and he quickly pressed the bleeding flesh to Jessa’s mouth. She fought the liquid flowing into her mouth at first, but then she moaned and latched on, suckling.
I fe
lt like I was witnessing something very much private, so I turned around with a blush staining my cheeks. I might not have been able to see, but I could still hear her moan as she sucked at his open wound.
Finally Seb
said, “It is done.” He reached for my hand and I turned around. “When she wakes she will be completely healed. She will also be different from who she was before.”
“Have you turned her then?” I ask
ed, secretly hoping he had. Jessa was a norm. Eventually I would have had to leave her behind.
“Yes, her injuries were more severe than the doctors in this butcher
’s shop were letting on. The only way to heal her was to turn her. When she wakes she will be confused. She will crave my presence because I am her maker, but I am also her destined, so she will find me soon after she has awoken.” Seb leaned down and kissed Jessa gently on the mouth. “Sleep well, my love. For when you awake the real fun begins.” He looked over at me with a feral light in his eyes that matched the one in my own. “The norm will be no more after this night. I know you want revenge for this, but by right, it is mine.”
I nod
ded my head in understanding but I was actually confused. Damn unanswered questions. I didn’t know how I felt about Sabrina dying, and then I looked at Jessa so still and small in the hospital bed and I knew the bitch had to die.
“I want details Seb. If I can’t
do it myself, then I deserve to know that she suffered for this.”
“You have
changed haven’t you little niece? I like this side of you. Never let anyone fuck with you.
That
is lesson number one.” With a quick kiss on my cheek, he slipped silently out of the fourth floor window.
I just shook my head, t
elling myself to just take it in stride. I jumped slightly when I felt Jaxx wrap his arms around me from behind.
“Everything that can be done here
is done. Let’s go home, pretty eyes. I have a need to be close to you.”
Eve
n with my best friend lying hurt in the same room, he could still bring me to life. I turned to look at him. “Seb was here.”
“I know. I heard everything
, but we must go now. Jessa will be fine now, but she needs her rest. And
I
need to be inside of
you
.” He grinned wickedly at me.
I smile
d back. The first real smile I’d shared since I’d heard about Jessa’s accident. Everything was going to be put to rights. I wasn’t going to eventually lose the sister of my heart. Sabrina was going to get hers, and I was going home with the only man in the world that could make me smile after the terrible day I’d had. “I love you,” I whispered to him as we walked out of the room.
