‘I like the sound of that, tomorrow it is.’ He stood up, stretched out his hand.

She took his hand and he pulled her up.

‘Celine, Celine, Celine.’ He took her into his arms and the
n brought her out again searching her eyes. ‘Why are you doing this to me?’

‘Doing what?’

‘This.’ He took her hand and placed it on his heart.

His heart was beating so fast she leaned her head into him on top of her hand. He placed
the other hand on her head and brushed down her hair.

‘I…I love you Celine. Why did you make me love you?’

She shut her eyes as the tears surfaced. She leaned into him not wanting to let go. She loved him so much it hurt and it hurt now more than before.

‘I love you too.’ She moved away and this time it was her turn
to kiss him gently on the lips.

They kissed for a long while, forgetting about the world around them. When the door swung opened letting in the cold breeze they broke away.

‘Don’t mind me.’ Ava shut the door behind her.

‘I was on my way out anyway.’ He broke away from Celine, their
hands lingered a while longer. ‘I shall see you tomorrow say twelve?’

‘Twelve’s perfect.’ She shrugged shyly.

He moved in and kissed her cheek and made his way out the door.

‘You look different.’ Ava watched her friend.

‘Different how?’

‘Something’s happened.’

‘A lot.’

‘Oooh do tell.’ She took off her jacket and sat on the couch.

Celine joined her but she wasn’t too happy, she was worried about the news Rhyland had told her.

‘Why do you look so sad, I thought I saw some lovey dovey feelings going on there.’

‘Oh Ava, it’s not all good news.’

‘Well start with the bad and then move onto the good.’

‘Rhyland’s dying.’

‘What?’

‘That was my reaction.’ She began to well up.

‘Dying how?

‘He hasn’t gone into detail but he will soon. I’m so scared.’

Ava took her hand. ‘So what now?’

‘I don’t know. We’re going to
New York tomorrow.’

‘Oh my word! Is that the good news?’

‘Some of it.’

‘Go on tell me the good news?’

‘He loves me!’ She blushed.

‘Oh Celine that’s wonderful!
’ She gave her a hug.

‘He said it, he said he loves me.’ She smiled but then fell silent as if a dark cloud had drifted over her. ‘But he’s dying, why why this why me.’

Ava kept her in her arms.

‘I feel like I’m on a very fast rollercoaster. One minute I’m joyful the next I’m so sad I could die. Whhhhhy!’

‘Why don’t I make us something to eat? You sit here and relax and dream about your trip to New York. Just take the moments as they come. It could be two years from now, a year. Don’t sentence him to death before you hear the whole story. He’s not dying tomorrow.’

‘You’re right. When did you get so wise?’

‘Just repeating things you’ve said to me over the months.’

Ava got up and went to make them something to eat. Celine
reached for the remote and switched on the television. The sound better than the emptiness she felt within herself. She gazed at the flicking pictures without being aware of what she was watching. She was lost, lost in her own thoughts. The man she’d truly fallen for was dying, how was she supposed to live with that?

The night dragged on she barely managed two mouthfuls. In the end she had to go to bed, she had to be alone just to think. And that’s all she did the whole night. She just thought and thought and thought until her head hurt, until the sun shone through the curtains, until he came to pick her up and whisked her away to
New York City.
