Oh, no way. Dawn had kept quiet and heard enough. “No. My husband will not be going on any dates with anyone but me. Now, I don’t know if it’s done different here in America, but how about we start again with a greeting to your son of ‘hi, how are you?’ Or even ‘I missed you and I’m happy you’re home.’ You haven’t stopped talking since meeting him at the airport, and I know Gordon is being polite and not interrupting but, damn.” Dawn turned to Gordon. “You couldn’t have butt in when she started with dates with other women?”

The dick laughed and pulled her to him for a kiss. “I like the jealous side.”

“I wasn’t jealous, just, uh, well, your mother was rude.” Dawn felt the heat rise in her cheeks at the blatant lie—she was so jealous. She didn’t want Gordon near any snotty nose society woman. She’d seen enough of those bitches at his party.

Gordon laughed harder, and she glowered at him. “Sprite, I just ignored her,” he whispered close to her ear. “My mother wouldn’t listen anyway. I’ve told her a million times before not to set me up on a date.” He eased away and said louder, “Mother never listens.”

The woman in question sputtered, and Dawn ignored her and narrowed her gaze on Gordon. “You didn’t even tell her who I am and what I am to you. Maybe if she fuckin’ knew she would have stopped.” Dawn was pissed that his parents didn’t know about her. Why hadn’t he told his parents about her? Was he embarrassed by her or did he choose her because he ran out of time. Gordon seemed to like keeping things from people. Doubt swamped her, and Dawn hated how she started to feel.

Gordon cupped her face stroking her cheek, and she fought herself not to melt into his touch. He leaned in, and his lips brushed hers, and when she didn’t react, her worry at why he hadn’t told anyone about her keeping her frozen still, he rested his forehead on hers. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I should have told her.” He leaned back and looked at his mother whose gaze was now locked on Dawn’s left hand that was clenched on Dawn’s lap. “Mother, I’d like you to meet my wife, Dawn. Dawn Wilks. Dawn, my mother, Catherine Louise Wilks.”

“It’s nice to meet you.” Dawn tried not to spit her words out, but she was angry with Gordon. Dawn held her hand out, and his mother’s gaze narrowed, and a cruel twist of the first facial expression came across her Botox face.

“What? You got married and didn’t tell me?” Something flashed in her eyes, and for the first time, Dawn saw emotion, pain, and hurt.

“Yes. I met Dawn while I was away in Australia.” Gordon held his hand up. “And before you start, she had no idea who I was. She’s been angry with me for keeping it from her. I had married her before she found out who I am and what I’m worth. Come to think of it... she still doesn’t know what I’m worth unless she looked it up. Dawn thought I was a bartender.”

Damn. She still hadn’t done a thorough search on Gordon. Gordon has turned her into an idiot. She should have investigated him as soon as he told her who he really was. That was something she intended to rectify as soon as she could.

His mother laughed. “Oh, Gordon, you went back to that. Why ever for? Your father and I weren’t around to disappoint or anger.”

Dawn darted her gaze between the two. What was his mother talking about? Was Gordon keeping more secrets from her?

“Mother, I wanted to know she wanted me for me and not my money. I wanted someone who didn’t want our static in society. Becoming a bartender again helped me find what I wanted. I know Dawn doesn’t want me for my money. She’s with me for me—and not what I can give her. I love her, Mother. If you can’t accept that and her than I, we don’t need you in our life.”

“Son, have you thought of what everyone will say? What they will think?”

“I don’t care what anyone else thinks.”

“Gordon, she’s a nobody. She has—”

“I know, and I told you I don’t care. Dawn is what I want.”

Dawn seethed. Gordon spoke like she wasn’t sitting right next to him. She didn’t bloody well care about his money. She wouldn’t have cared even if he told her when they were in Australia. Sure, she properly wouldn’t have started this with him, but she still deserved to know. They kept talking about her like she wasn’t sitting there, and the more they spoke, the greater her anger rose. Clenching her fists, she closed her eyes and imagined hitting something a lot to calm her raging anger, but the more she listened, the higher her anger rose. Dawn wished she was home in Australia. She was never a violent person until she met Gordon. He seemed to bring out anger issues she didn’t know she had.

Catherine laughed, and it seemed so out of place. Her demeanor seemed to change with that laugh, too. “Oh, son, that explains her face now. I think you’re in trouble.” The woman, who she thought not long ago expressionless and cold, did what Dawn would call a smile if she weren’t full of Botox. “Dawn, I am sorry. You must excuse me as I haven’t seen my son in over a year, and I would never go to the cesspool that is Vegas. The phone calls I received were always when he had no time to talk. I knew he had this silly idea of finding a woman in Australia. I really didn’t think he’d do it. I must say though, you are quite pretty. You have lovely porcelain skin and the rest…” Catherine’s gaze roamed over her, and Dawn saw the calculating appraisal. “I’m sure we can work on.” She gave a fake chuckle, and Dawn’s anger diminished to be replaced by unease. “I’ll organize a time tomorrow to take you shopping to get the right clothes and accessories. I’ll talk with my trainer, and we can get you on a great routine and help lose some of that baby fat.” Catherine reached across and patted her on the knee, and Dawn stared down at the perfectly manicured hand draped in expensive jewelry and felt panic join the uneasy feeling. What the hell had just happened? Gordon’s mother Catherine had changed her tune in an instant and was now talking a mile a minute about organizing things Dawn wanted nothing to do with. Dawn felt like she’d just landed in the twilight zone.

“We’ll have dinner tonight, and I’ll see your dining skills and what needs work. I’ll have you ready for soc—”

Hell, no, Dawn had heard enough. She gazed at Gordon to find him staring at her with a confused expression. Fuck it, if this was what he wanted, a woman like how his mother was describing, he could go shove it. “No. I’m sorry, Catherine, I won’t be dining with you.” Turning to Gordon, Dawn gave him her best glare. “If this is what you want in a woman, you’ve married the wrong one. I am not, nor will I ever be, like your mother. I like my style, I am happy with my weight, and I don’t need lessons on dining skills or any such shit.” Anger consumed her. How dare he just sit there while his mother organized her life and what Catherine wanted Dawn to do and to be? “If this is what you want, then you can have it, just not with me. When we arrive at our destination, I’ll be booking a flight home.” There, she’d said it. She was done.

Gordon scrubbed his face and rubbed his forehead. Then he got off the seat and went to the front where he pressed a button, and the divider came down. “Henry, change of plans.” Dawn felt her heart sink, and tears threaten to leak out at Gordon’s words. Even though she was angry and upset with how his mother was treating her, she still loved him. She may have just said she wanted to go home, but she would rather stay with Gordon. She knew he would break her heart. “The Southlake estate is close. Take my wife and me there, and you may then drop my mother wherever she wants to go.”

“Yes, sir. We are less than ten minutes from Southlake.”

Gordon didn’t reply but moved back and sat next to her again. Dawn relaxed slightly when he grabbed her hand and held it in his own. “Mother, listen, and listen well because I will not repeat myself. Dawn is not yours to instruct and manipulate. She is my wife. One of the reasons I chose her is because she is and never will be anything like you or the socialites with whom you associate. I love Dawn just the way she is, and if you can’t deal with that, then we don’t need you in our lives.” Gordon squeezed her hand, and the more he spoke, the more her anger deflated. “But if you’re willing to not interfere and try to bend things the way you want them, then you’re welcome to be a part of our lives and the lives of any children we have in the future.”

Catherine’s shrewd gaze darted from Gordon to her, and Dawn knew she was assessing her next move. “Well, if that’s how you feel, I think I need to talk to your father.” She sat back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Sprite, I’m proud of you. Mother’s a handful, and you handled her beautiful,” he whispered in her ear. “I knew if you could handle her, then you’ll be fine in my world.”

What the fuck? Leaning into him she mumbled, “You’re joking, right? Please tell me you didn’t say anything for the first ten or so minutes because you were waiting for me to stop her bullshit.” By the end, Dawn knew her voice was more a screech. The woman in question smirked at her and did what Dawn thought was an attempt at a raised eyebrow, but it barely lifted as her forehead was so tight.

Gordon winced, but Dawn didn’t care. Right now, she wanted out of the limo and time away from the two people with her. Dawn slid away from Gordon and took the same stance as his mother, but looked out the window. She didn’t really see the scenery. She went through her latest choices and wondered if she’d made the biggest mistake of her life.

Chapter Seven

The house, or more like
mansion, was amazing. Dawn had been speechless when the limo had pulled up almost a week ago. It was massive with its three levels, six bedrooms and a study, an entertainment room, lounge room, dining room, a massive dream kitchen and a playroom with a pool table, dartboard, and bar. That was just the mansion. There was also a pool slash guest two-bedroom house. The grounds were elaborate with fancy carved bushes, flowering gardens, and lush green lawns.

She’d spent the first day wandering around in awe of what she was seeing. Then anger at another thing Gordon had kept from her, and the last couple of days she’d spent doubting she was good enough for Gordon. It kept her away from him. Dawn hated how, since being with Gordon, she’d gone from a pretty, confident woman to someone with a bunch of doubts. Her self-esteem had yo-yoed.

Lying on the bed that she shared with Gordon—even angry with him, she couldn’t sleep anywhere but in his arms—she opened her laptop and waited as Skype loaded. It was late in Australia, but she needed to talk to her sister. She hadn’t spoken to her since she arrived at the mansion, and then the conversation hadn’t been a long one.

Dialing Destiny, she waited until she picked up. “Hey, you do realize how late it is?”

“I’m sorry. I need you. I’ve made mistake after mistake.”

“No, Dawn, you haven’t.” Destiny rubbed her eyes and then sighed. “What do you mean?”

Tears rolled down her cheeks, and Dawn let them fall. She was happy to see her sister, her twin, but she missed her like crazy and hated feeling so out of her element. “I don’t know if this is going to work. He’s kept too many secrets. I’ve stayed angry with him for too long. He didn’t tell his parents about us, and then when I meet his mother, he practically left me to fend for myself. I’m in one of his houses—houses with an S, Destiny. He has staff. Do you know what it’s like to wander down to the kitchen to find a maid slash cook in there ready and eager to make something for you? Argh, that’s just my mornings. I don’t know how many times during the day I have about two or three people come check on me and ask if I need anything if they can do anything. You don’t know what it’s like to not know what I can and can’t do in a house that is supposed to be mine. And every time I think I’m ready to forgive Gordon, he spends all day at work. Then he comes home with some bribery like he thinks a new computer, a car, or tickets to Breaking Benjamin will get me to forgive and forget—like buying me things will make me happy.” By the time Dawn finished talking, she was sobbing.

“Oh, Dawn, I wish I was there right now. I love you. You haven’t made a mistake. You don’t make mistakes.” Destiny winked at her, and Dawn couldn’t help but smile. “You love Gordon, and any idiot could see he’s crazy about you. I’ve never been lucky enough to find someone who’s willing to spend their weekends sitting around eating junk food and watching movies, or help looking after their girlfriend’s nephew, in my case my kid. Dawn, the man loves you. He didn’t tell you certain things about himself, but really, Dawn, surely you can see it from his side?” Destiny sighed loudly. “You can’t even handle a massive mansion you’re in now. You know if you knew who he was, you’d never have even become involved with him. Look, you’re just hurt because things aren’t how you thought they would be. Gordon isn’t a bartender, he doesn’t have a limited budget and a small house and no family, he’s the total opposite, and it scares you. Dawn, he’s still the same person he was here. He just has money now and parents. They may not be good parents, but we don’t have great ones either.” Destiny moved her laptop bringing it closer to her face. “Let go of your anger. Let go of the image you had in your head. You need a new one. Gordon chose you because he loves you, but also because he knew you could handle his lifestyle and all that comes with being with him. Wipe your eyes and take a deep breath.”

Dawn did as her sister instructed and tried to calm down. Destiny was right. She needed to let everything go and start again.

“I love you, Dawn, and I know this is all different to what you expected, but I can tell you that Gordon loves you.” Destiny huffed. “That man doesn’t just love you, he adores you. Anyone who doesn’t see that is an idiot, including yourself. From what you’ve told me, he’s had a different upbringing than us. You had said before he was raised by nannies, and if his mother was a handful enough to get to you, she must be a piece of work. Gordon may not know what to do with you right now. Give him a chance and stop trying to look for reasons for this not to work. You’re stronger than this. You know what you want and are not some fragile woman who needs a man. You stay with Gordon because you love him. Put your big girl panties on and go get what you want.”

Closing her eyes, Dawn felt like an idiot. How could she not have figured this out herself? Opening her eyes, she stared at the screen and at her sister wishing she could pull her through and hug her. “How’d we reverse roles?”

Destiny grinned. “I know, right? You’re usually the one helping me and bailing me out of messes.” She chuckled. “It’s nice to know you’re not perfect, Dawn.”

“Ha, I’ve never been perfect. I’ve always been screwed up, but apparently, I was saving it all up just for Gordon.”

“Ha, ha.” Destiny smiled. “What are you going to do?”

“I need to tell Gordon I forgive him and apologize for being a bitch.”

“Ooh, I have the perfect way to show him how all is forgiven.”

Feeling a millions times better now that I’d talked to my sister, I let her tell me her plan.

Gordon was an
idiot, but he didn’t know how to fix the trouble he’d caused. He’d been stupid, wanting to see if Dawn was strong enough to resist his mother and her conniving ways. He had been an arsehole to test Dawn, but a tiny part of him had wanted to make sure he’d made the right choice. The problem now was Dawn wasn’t talking to him.

A week had passed since Dawn had said more than two words in a row to him. Henry had taken them to the Southlake estate, and he’d thought Dawn would forgive him when she saw the house and grounds, but he should have known better. Dawn wasn’t a woman who was bought, and that was one of the things that drew her to him. Gordon loved Dawn, but he’d never loved a woman the way he did Dawn. He’d grown to love certain nannies, but he’d never fallen for any of the women he dated. He didn’t know how to act or what was expected of him, and Dawn was so different from any other woman.

This last week with Dawn barely speaking to him, he’d immersed himself in work. He hoped that if he gave her space, she’d come around and forgive him. He’d told his staff that she was the only one who could ever disturb him while at work. He’d given orders to his staff to cater to anything she wanted, and instead of his secretary getting a gift, he’d gone every day and bought her something. Yesterday, he’d bought her tickets to one of the screaming music concerts. Gordon grinned as he remembered coming home to find her on her laptop. She refused to use the new one he got her. She was sitting at the desk in the study he’d given her. She’d barely taken her gaze from the screen until he waved the tickets in front of her, and she let out a squeal and jumped him raining him with kisses. It had lasted for a good five minutes before he screwed it up by asking if he was forgiven for being an idiot.

She’d let go of him and gave a longing look at the tickets before mumbling, “No.”

Gordon knew he was getting to her, but he just had to try harder.

Adjusting the coat
, she stared at the office doors. She could do this, Dawn convinced herself for the hundredth time. The week had been agony. She may have been angry with Gordon, but she still missed him like crazy. Gordon had been working seventeen, eighteen hour days, coming home to give her a gift, and then back again to sleep. She missed Gordon.

After her talk with Destiny, where Dawn realized she was being silly and a bitch, she thought about her week. She then came to the realization that if Gordon had been with her more, she would have forgiven him sooner, and hopefully, come to realize what Destiny helped her to realize. Dawn decided if this was going to work, she had to be herself and stop acting as if she were a guest in her own home and talk to Gordon. First, she wanted him to know she forgave him and loved him.

Mavis, Gordon’s secretary, winked at her when she went to lunch telling her to enjoy, and that Gordon wasn’t with anyone. Mavis had been gone now for a good five minutes, and Dawn still hadn’t moved from staring at the door. She’d never done anything like this before or had she even dreamed she would. Well, she might have dreamed, but she would never have done it. She could do this for her husband though. Whoa. That sounded so strange.

Taking a deep breath in and slowly letting it out, she walked to the office door and opened it, quietly slipping in. Gordon sat at a big wooden and marble table with his gaze glued to his computer screen. He didn’t even look up when she came in. “Mavis, can you grab the Swarovski file?”

Clearing her suddenly dry throat, she inched toward him and mumbled, “It’s not Mavis.”

Gordon’s head shot up, and his gaze homed in on her straight away. “Sprite, what are you doing here?”

Shit, did he not want her here? She knew she shouldn’t have listened to her sister. Gordon had been working so hard since they’d arrived back in Dallas. Maybe she shouldn’t be disturbing him. She should go. Clutching her trench coat tighter, she turned ready to run. “Nothing, I, um, I’ll see you at home?”

She didn’t make it to the doors before Gordon’s arms circled her. His breath feathered over her ear before moving down to kiss her just below. She shivered as his lips touched her skin and brushing back and forth.

“Don’t go. I like that you came here.” He nibbled on the tip of her earlobe, and her breath hitched as it sent a shot of pure ecstasy through her. “I’ve missed you… this.” He ground his erect cock against her arse. “Did you come her for a reason?” His hands roamed her coat covered body before his fingers pried hers away from clutching the coat. Slowly, he opened the trench coat and eased it down her body until it fell to the floor. “Mmm, perfection,” he moaned. Stepping back, he admired her in the black heels and barely there lace coverings. She resisted the urge to cover herself, but felt the heat rise and knew her chest and face would be bright red.

Nibbling on her bottom lip, she stood exposed before Gordon, her husband, in his office. “You’ve been working a lot this past week, and I have been, well, a bitc… I thought… I thought I would come and tell you I miss you… and that I love you, and I don’t want you to think I’m angry with you still about not telling me everything because I forgive y—”

He growled and gathered her to him locking his lips to hers and cutting off what she was struggling to say. Gordon’s hands skimmed down her body resting on her arse, cupping it and lifting her up. She instinctively wrapped her legs around his waist, and Gordon took her to his desk where he sat her on the edge looking out the big windows.

Easing his mouth from hers, he smiled down at her. “This is just what I need. I’ve missed you.” She sighed in relief at Gordon’s confession and kissed him. He smelled and tasted so good. Gordon spread her legs further apart and settled between them. He reached up and slid her lacy undies down and let them fall to the ground.

Tugging his tie loose, Dawn watched enraptured as he undid the buttons on his shirt. Unable to resist, she opened his shirt and pulled it off eager to touch him. He grinned and she smiled, circling her legs around him and pulling him closer, so she could undo his pants. Hooking her fingers into his suit pants, she undid the button and slid the zipper down and then eased her hands into the waistband of his boxers and let them follow his pants. He grunted as he shook and kicked his shoes off that were caught in his pants. Zoning in on his thick cock, watching it bounce with his movements, she licked her lips as anticipation ran through her.

Gordon leaned over and undid her bra, and she shrugged out of it. When they were both naked bar her heels, she wrapped her arms around him and yanked him down, so their lips met and danced together. The friction of their bodies sparked her need more, and she trailed her hands over his back feeling the muscles as they flexed.

Needing air, she eased her mouth from his panting and resting her head on his shoulder. Gordon didn’t stop, his mouth nibbled his way down her body. “I’m going to eat you.” She shivered with need at his words and helped when he moved her so her butt was just on the edge of the table and her legs settled loosely on his back.

He came down on his knees between her legs, and she moaned as his tongue licked her clit. Flattening her hands on the table, she wished she had something to grip onto. Dawn closed her eyes as his strokes got longer, and he dug into her pussy, devouring her. The tension in her body built, and she opened her eyes, leaned back, and ground herself against his mouth, needing release. Gordon chuckled, and the vibrations coursed throughout her, bringing her that much closer.

“Gordon. Fucking hell, I love what you do to me,” she said, her voice a breathless whisper as he sucked her clit into his mouth. His hands gripped her waist, and they tightened as her breath grew faster, and her orgasm burst through her. Dawn moaned her release and reached down gripping his hair, holding him to her.

Gordon eased his mouth from her, and she let her hands fall. His body covered her, and then his dick pushed home. “I’ve missed this so damn much,” he grunted. The intense focus in his bright blue eyes captured her, and she couldn’t turn away as his cock drove into her over and over. Her already sensitive body hummed with renewed pleasure, and she arched up digging high heels into him as his hands came to caress her breasts.
