How can one do it?

We can convert the abstract names of elements into images by using the PNN method and for learning atomic numbers, the phonetic peg system can be used. Once you have images for both element and atomic number, you need to make a funny association between them.

For example
, the atomic number of
Zinc
is
30

Zinc: Zinn (PNN)

30: Mess (Phonetic)

Visualize that a
Zinn
is serving
food to everybody in the
Mess
at a very
fast rate.

Below is a chart for your reference. This will help you memorize the complete periodic table:

Visualize the above associations clearly 2–3 times to strengthen their impression on your brain.

Below are some more associations for memorizing the next 10 elements of the periodic table:

Revise the above visualizations and try to recall and write the atomic numbers of the following elements:

Element
Symbol
At. No.
Sodium
Na

Lithium
Li

Nitrogen
N

Phosphorus
P

Potassium
K

Carbon
C

Chlorine
Cl

Neon
Ne

Potassium
K

Silicon
Si

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Now try to make your own associations for the following random elements with their atomic numbers:

MEMORIZING FACTS ABOUT METALS

1. LIQUID METALS
—Hg, Ga, Cs, Fr
Hg: Mercury: Mercury Bulb
Ga: Gallium: Gali (street)
Cs: Cesium: Scissors
Fr: Francium: Frock
Visualization
:

You are sitting in a
gali
under a
mercury bulb
, cutting
frock
with a pair of
scissors
and dipping it in
liquid.

2. Element kept in water
is Phosphorus (P)
Phosphorus—Fox with pores
Visualization:
A
Fox
with
pores
always lives under
water.
3. ELEMENTS IN A PERIOD:
Let’s say you have to memorize elements in
Group I
of the periodic table:

GROUP I
PNN
Lithium
Lichee
Sodium
Soda Water
Potassium
Pot
Rubidium
Ruby (precious stone)
Cesium
Scissors
Francium
Frock

Visualization:
Numbers of a group can be visualized using the Rhyme method. So Group I can be associated with ‘Sun’.

On the
Sun
,
Lichees
are growing. You pluck them and soak them in
soda water
in a big
pot.
After some time, as if by magic, it gets converted into a big
ruby
. You cut it into small pieces using a pair of
scissors
and paste it on your
frock
.

In your exams, when you will be asked about the elements in group-I, you can easily visualize and recall what the elements are doing on the sun and all the elements will come to your mind in the right sequence.

Try to do the same for memorizing the elements of Group II:

GROUP II
PNN
Berillium

Magnesium

Calcium

Strontium

Barium

Radium

Visualization:

4. SOME ALLOYS
(i)
BRONZE
—Copper + Tin
Cu + Sn
PNN
Cousin
Visualization:
My
cousin
won a
Bronze
medal in a race.
(ii)
GUNMETAL
—Cu + Sn + Zn
PNN
: Cousin + Zinn
Visualization:
A
Zinn
is pointing a
metallic gun
at my
cousin.
(iii)
STAINLESS STEEL
—Carbon + Iron + Nickel + Chromium

Carbon
Iron
Nickel
Chromium
C
Fe
Ni
Cr
Car
Fenny

Crow

Visualization:

My
stainless steel car
got stuck in a
fenny
. A powerful
crow
pulled it out.

(iv) ROSE METAL
—Pb + Bi + Zn + Cd

Lead
Bismuth
Zinc
Cadmium
Pb
Bi
Zn
Cd
Punjab
Bi pass
Zinn
Cadbury
Chocolate

Visualization:

On the
Punjab bi pass
road, a
Zinn
is giving a
rose along
with a
Cadbury
chocolate bar to everyone.

5. MELTING POINTS
(i) Melting point of Tin is 232° C

PNN
Phonetic
TIN
232
Tin-Tin (comic)
n m n

Naman (boy name)

Visualization:
Naman
is reading a
Tin-Tin
comic book with great care as it
melts
easily.

(ii) Melting point of Gold is 1063° C

PNN
Phonetic
GOLD
1 0 6 3
Gold Plate
d s j m

dosa + jam

Visualization:
As soon as you put a hot
dosa
with jam stuffing on a golden plate, it starts
melting
.

6. BOILING POINT
Boiling point of
Oxygen
is 90.2° C

Oxygen

Ox
Bus + stop + duck

(Phonetic) + (decimal) + (shape)

Visualization:
An Ox started boiling with anger when he saw that the bus stop was full of ducks.

7.
