“Okay, what do I do?”

Burning Tree was silent for a moment more then turned to him and looked him in the eye.

“You will talk to me, as I have very few friends that are my age, and you and I will be brothers,” Burning Tree announced.

Joe eyed the old Indian for a minute and then broke out in a smile. “You’re probably right about that. Sure, why sure we will be friends. To tell the truth I kinda miss havin’ someone to talk to that knows what I’m saying.”

“Good.”

Three days later, Lee stood before Burning Tree and Katherine brought forth Hattie to the middle of the camp. As Hattie approached Lee, Katherine bound their hands in a crisscross.

Burning Tree sang an Indian song, and when he was through, he sprinkled something over them, then murmured a chant that sounded older than time itself.

Chase came up to them slowly, untied their hands and smiled. “You are married, by the Shawnee traditions.”

Lee looked at Hattie and pulled her into his arm. “There’s one white tradition I want to keep.”

“Kissing the bride?” Chase muttered with a grin.

“Umm,” Hattie moaned as Lee’s lips locked onto hers hungrily.

When they pulled apart, Chase guided a white stallion toward Lee. “You may take your bride to your cabin. We will see you in three days.”

“That might be long enough.” Lee smiled into Hattie’s face.

He put her gently onto the horse, and guided her to their land. The girls all giggled and went to play with their new friends. Sam saw the same girl making eyes at him and blushed. Joe cornered Burning Tree in a conversation.

When Hattie saw the new cabin, she gasped. “Oh my God…this is our new home?”

“Do you like it?” Lee asked, setting her back on the ground and hobbling the horse.

“Like it? This is beautiful, and it’s so big.”

“Well darlin’, we’re startin’ off with a few in the family already. We needed a big place. This one has room for the girls, one for Sam and one for Joe and one for us. It also has a small room for our babies.”

“Our babies?” She gasped again, looking at him. “I love the sound of that.”

“Me too…oh woman, I’ve missed you.”

“Come on.” She pulled on his hand. “Show me how much…”
