I walked, I ran, I jumped, I flew

Right off the ground to float to you

There’s no gravity to hold me down for real

But somehow I’m still alive inside

You took my breath, but I survived

I don’t know how, but I don’t even care

So how do you expect me

To live alone with just me

‘Cause my world revolves around you

It’s so hard for me to breathe

PROLOGUE

There is an imaginary line in a marriage that you shouldn’t cross
. The husband is the offense. The wife is the defense. Sometimes it could be the opposite. Either way it goes, both the husband and wife cannot cross this imaginary line. Well not until the temptation for another person outside the marriage becomes overwhelming and the flirtation with that other person starts to kickoff. There are actually two of these imaginary lines, one for the husband and one for the wife. The difference between the two lines is the neutral zone. I put my cock in the neutral zone and now I can’t get it out. My evil twin is stuck in the Astro-Turf. I crossed the line and now there is a flag on the play. The game is not over yet. At least it’s not over for me. As far as I’m concerned the game has just begun.

CHAPTER 1

I drove like I had Miss Daisy riding shotgun. The car was silent. I thought to turn the radio on but nixed that idea. Mike probably didn’t know what to say to me and I sure as hell didn’t know what to say to him. The jig was up. I had been found out. I lied to my younger brother and he’s so pissed he can’t even talk to me. I don’t even know where I’m driving to. I haven’t got a clue my destination. Maybe I’m on a highway to hell, adultery is a sin.

I looked over at Mike
with the icepack pressed to his jaw. I can’t believe I hit him. Yeah I can. He asked for it and I gave it to him. There was a tension between us that was thick and palpable. It was a force field that I can’t penetrate. I thought of driving to a restaurant but I was afraid my temper would flare and I would make a scene. On top of everything that’s happened today, do I really want to get arrested?

Mike knew how to push my buttons. I’m not sure if he marvels in this day. I believe he has put me up on a pedestal. I believe he envies me.
Sure he’s jealous but he secretly holds me in high regard. I shattered his perfect image of me. I’m not perfect. I fell in love with another woman. I love Kari and I love my wife. It’s just in different ways. He won’t understand me when I try to explain. I didn’t set out to cheat. I definitely didn’t want to fall in love with her.

BUZZ! BUZZ! Mike’s phone was vibrating in his pocket. It took him a minute to realize it was him and not me. He retrieved the cell from his pocket and
glanced at the screen. The buzzing stopped and he placed the phone back in his pocket. I pulled into the parking lot of Lemington Lakes Park.

Where else would I go? The park was
nearly empty. It was getting late. The sun had gone down. There were a few dog walkers and skateboard kids hanging around but it was almost vacant. I got out the car first and Mike followed me. I walked the cement path to the metal bleachers adjacent the baseball diamond. I took a seat in the middle and Mike sat next to me. He was close but far, if that makes any sense.

He spoke first. “You hit me.”

“I did.” I was being a dick. Did he want an apology? He should know better than that. This is not the first time I gave him a beatdown.

“You lied to me.”

“Mikey, listen, I was ashamed. I could not admit it to you when I couldn’t even admit it to myself.”

BUZZ! BUZZ!
BUZZ! Mike’s cell phone started buzzing again. He pulled it out the pocket of his shorts. He looked down at the screen and turned it off.

Mason, what does that mean?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m supposed to say.”

“What is going on with you and Tess? Why would you do this?”

“Nothing, everything is fine at home.”

“It couldn’t be if you think it’s okay to fuck this girl and take her to Vegas and pay her fucking bills.”

I took a breath to gain my composure. I was very protective of Kari. She was mine. Any talk of her could set me off.
“So you really felt the need to snoop, to spy on me, to follow me.”

“Fuck Mason, you weren’t acting like yourself.”

“I do everything required of me. I work. I take care of my family. I spend time with my family. I go home every night.”

“Do you hear yourself? You think you have it all together but you don’t.
You are tearing your family apart.”

“Tess doesn’t even know. The only p
erson that knows is you. Mikey c’mon. You’re my brother. You have got to have my back. You can’t tell anyone what’s going on here.”

“Bullshit! I’m disgusted with yo
u. You have a wonderful family and you’re trying to throw it away.” Mike ran his hands through his hair. “Have your back. Mason do you hear this bullshit coming from your mouth.”

“I
assure you that I am not throwing my family away. I’m not going anywhere. Nothing has to change.”

“Everything has changed. What did Trey’s mother do to you?
You sound like a crazy person.”

T
hat was a confusing question. She did so many things to me. The first thing that comes to mind is she loved me like I had never been loved before.

“I don’t understand
what you mean.”

“Mason, dude you are jeopardizing your family, you are giving her money. You are throwing your marriage into the toilet.

Am I? “No, listen listen listen, Kari know
s I’m married. She accepts it. It’s not a big deal.”

“Maybe not to you but Tess view
s it otherwise. Do you really not realize that you have turned into some cheating asshole?”

“I’m not trying to be an ass. I can’t explain this to you. You are content with the life you have. You never were a
mbitious. You never wanted more. You take what you get. You settle for less. I have never been like that and you know it.”

“So because this girl is better in bed. That’s your explanation?”

“See, you don’t get it.”

“No and I never will because it’s all lies. You’re lying to yourself. Be honest, you like the sex. The sex has you by the balls. It’s different. It’s new. Admit the truth.”

I couldn’t admit that because it wasn’t my truth. Sure Kari was new. Sure the sex was hot but there was more. It was like we were soulmates, as corny as that sounds I couldn’t come up with another word to describe it. I didn’t even believe in that kind of stuff but it was hard to put into words how I felt when I was with her. When I was away from her I felt empty. She filled me up. She made me smart, happy, alive.

“Mason, hello, earth to Mason.” Mike woke me from my introspective daydream.

“So now you know I lied. Now what?”

“Fuck Mason, why did you put me in this situation?”

“I put you, dude you’re the one that went snooping around. You’re the one who felt it was you’re moral obligation to concern yourself with my personal life. When have I ever meddled in your marriage? I don’t care what goes on with you and that fat cow you married.” I know I shouldn’t have said that but I was pissed and Melissa was a bitch. She treated my brother like crap. She made more money than Mike and she never let him forget it.

“So now you’re going to berate my wife. She was only trying to be there for your wife. She was trying to comfort her when you decided to check out the marriage.”

“Okay fine, I’m sorry.” I wasn’t sorry but I was trying to do damage control. Mike was the only one that knew about Kari and I needed him to shut his fucking trap. Mike is a fucking idiot. His wife propositioned me a few years ago. This was before they were married and she was fifty pounds lighter. She was drunk at my annual company Christmas party and she came on to me. I literally had to fight her off me. It was just the one time but she’s hated me ever since. Melissa would love to learn I cheated on Tess. She loves drama and bullshit. She has Mike by the balls and she would love to have me by mine.

I could
have ruined Mike if I told him about Melissa but he wanted to marry her and I stood by him. I was his best man. I had to look at that mean bitch the entire ceremony eyeballing me like I was going to object or something.

I turned my body to face Mike. “Mikey, listen. I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have lied to you. I don’t want to hurt Tess. She cannot know I cheated. I promise I will get out of this. I swear. I just need time. I will leave Kari alone and everything will go back to the way it was. Dude. Look at me.”

Mike turned to me. “I want to believe you.”

“You can. Don’t tear my family apart. If Tess finds out it will devastate her. You know she’s fragile. Let me take care of this. You’re the only one that knows. Please Mikey let’s keep it that way.”

BUZZ! BUZZ! BUZZ! Mike’s phone vibrated again. Who the fuck keeps calling him?

“Are you going to answer it?” I asked.

“Ah, ah, no. It can wait.”

“Who is it?” I questioned. H
e was being weird.

“Ah, no one.”

Of course it was someone. “Give me the fucking phone.” I demanded. Mike looked fearful. Why? What the fuck is going on?

“Listen, Mason.” Mike stood so I did the same. He was
a giant ball of anxiety. He took an unsteady step backwards. He was genuinely scared of me. I took a hurried step forward. I didn’t want to pound him on the bleachers because I was sure we both would get hurt.

“What the fuck Mikey?”

“It’s Melissa. When I was outside of Kari’s house I called her.”

“No fucking way!” I quickly reached up and ran my fingers though my h
air. Mike flinched just like when we were kids. I think he thought I was going to pounce on him. “You told your wife?”

“I’m sorry.” He glowered under my massive gaze.

“Fuck me!” I couldn’t stop myself. I lounged at him and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.

So many things were running through my mind. I couldn’t even get
a single thought to stick. The images were flying out and confusing the hell out of me. Did he really tell Melissa? I’m screwed. I’m so fucking screwed.

Mike was struggling to get out my grip. We were stumbling around on the bleachers as he tried to escape me. I had a tight hold on him and I refused to fall down on these metal bleachers. I balled my fist but inst
ead of punching him I pushed him down and he fell in between the steps of the bleachers. He was boxed in. I kicked him one good time in the balls and I reached down and grabbed his cell phone from his pocket.

Mike hunched in agony trapped in-between the small spac
e on the bleachers. He moaned as the pain shot through his loins. I had kicked the shit out of him and I know he felt it in his throat.
