Chapter Forty – Six

He raced through a blinding whiteness. The whiteness quickly turned to blackness as he streaked through space and time. Comets, constellation and gas giant filled planets surged past as he traveled at light speed.

He thought he saw a shooting star sweep past but he could not be sure. Everything was moving too fast. Nothing made sense at these speeds.

Another light loomed up ahead. What is that? He thought. He tried to slow down but couldn’t. Resigning himself to a grim fate, he closed his eyes and plunged into it.

Strange sounds rang out around him. He struggled to open his eyes but found he could not. It was as if a heavy weight lay on his eyelids making it almost impossible to open them.

A familiar voice rang out at that instant. he’d know that voice anywhere. Swift! The name was a soft whisper in his head. The knowledge that Swift was here gave him the strength to open his eyes.

He was in a large room lying on a bed with white sheets. And joy of joys, Swift stood beside the bed looking down at him with tears in his eyes.

“God Might!” He gasped. “You are awake.”

He leaned down and embraced him as more people in white coats surged into the room. Might knew he should be puzzled by his surroundings. He knew he should be asking what had happened and where they were. However, all those questions seemed strangely unimportant now. The only thing that mattered was that Swift was here and he had found him.

Two months later

Gbenga looked at Might with mirth in his eyes as he ate a bowl of fried rice and chicken. They were still in the hospital. The doctors were astounded at his recovery. For someone who had been in a coma for a year and some weeks, his strength had returned faster than anyone ever dared hope.

Gbenga sighed brushing away the wrinkles in the trouser of his grey suit. His eyes grew sad as he looked at the gleaming white hospital floor. Over the last four weeks Might had filled him in about his experiences in Nephilim after they parted on Mount Karnack.

Respect filled his sad eyes as he looked at his friend. The guy had been through a lot. He had braved untold hardship to come of his coma. Heaviness filled his heart when he remembered Brainwave’s message to him. It confirmed what Faith had said.

The only snag was, how did he find her? He still hadn’t figured that part out yet. Maybe it would come to him in time.

“What are you thinking about?” Might asked in a gruff voice.

He sighed snapping out of his reverie.  He had been so deep into his thoughts that he hadn’t realized that Might had been watching him.

“I am fine Niyi__” And yeah, he now knew his name was Niyi. Niyi Arogundade.

He was a lecturer in the university in Ibadan. He had been on the way to visit his estranged wife and daughter when he had had the accident. What a world.

“I didn’t ask you if you were fine Gbenga. I asked what you were thinking.”

“Nothing much__ the end of the world in about three and a half months, brainwave’s insistence that I find her, that kind of stuff.”

Niyi chuckled at his words. “It’s well Gbenga. You worry too much. Why worry about what you cannot change?”

“Well it appears there is something I can change__”

“Which is?”

“Brainwave’s fate. I have to find her.”

“And how do you intend to do that?”

“That is what I have to figure out.”

A long silence followed.

“As soon as I am better I am gonna go look for my wife and daughter. I have to try and convince them about what is coming.”

“I still don’t understand why you won’t just call them. They will probably be worried sick about you.”

“My daughter would, my wife wouldn’t. She’d probably think I just drifted off, shirked my responsibilities as usual.”

“Did you?”

“Did I what?”

“Did you shirk your responsibilities?”

“Not the way you think__” His voice drifted off.

“Hey it’s ok if you don’t want to talk about it. I didn’t mean to pry.”

“You are not prying. I will talk about it eventually but not right now.”

“Fair enough__”

There was silence for a few minutes.

“Is the bunker ready?”

“Yeah it is__ finished it two weeks ago. Bernard, the man that built it has been paid off. We signed a non-disclosure agreement. If he breaks it, I will sue him for every dime he is worth.

“Ok__” He paused.

“What Niyi?”

“Was just wondering__ am I and my family welcome in the bunker?”

“Of course you are. That was why it took this long to finish. Should have been finished a month ago, but I had Bernard extend it, building more rooms and such. The food in there can last us a year if necessary. I also acquired a property two blocks away. Underneath that is a food cache/warehouse; the food stocked up there will last five years, give or take.”

“What happens after that?”

“Dunno__ haven’t thought that far out. I have just been so concerned with the food, water. Want to do all I can to ensure we are well shielded from radiation and such.”

“I wish I could kill Gerald Summers.”

“Believe me I was tempted. But truth be told he is not responsible for his actions. The ether-tome is responsible. It is determined to bring earth to an end, and nothing anyone can do will change that.”

“What worries me is what you said about the confrontation between Darwin, the world Enders and the ether-tome. Maybe the destruction that is coming in December isn’t the real end. Maybe the one you saw is the real one.”

“But if that’s true, what is this one?”

A thoughtful look came on Gbenga’s face.

“Let’s go biblical for a moment, the bible does say that those who are God’s children would be raptured at the moment of Jesus’s second coming right?

“And the others will be left on earth to suffer the tribulation before eventually being cast into the lake of fire which is hell. What if the point of the ether-tome’s explosion is the beginning of the tribulation period and the destruction you witnessed the final end before the lake of fire experience?”

Niyi’s eyes grew wide with fear, seeing that Gbenga hurriedly added.

“I am only speculating though. Who knows what is really happening?”

A knock on the door roused them from their grim thoughts.

“Yes come in.”

The door opened a second later and Faith walked in. She looked beautiful in a shimmering green dress that reached her knees and hugged her curves. Her small feet were encased in black suede pumps.

Gbenga’s eyes brightened with pleasure.

“Hi! You didn’t tell me you were leaving the hotel.”

“Got bored. Decided to take a cab and come here.”

“You ok?” Gbenga asked noticing her wan look.

“Fine__ just worried about my sister is all.”

He nodded in understanding. Unable to find time from his busy schedule to go to Ibadan he had invited her here and surprisingly she had agreed.

He still hadn’t told her about the event and her sister being brainwave. He wasn’t sure whether he ever would. That was even if she would believe him. If he somehow managed to find brainwave and bring her out of her coma, maybe then he would. With her sister corroborating his story, she might just believe. He seriously doubted it now though.

Niyi greeted her politely. They had met severally over the last couple of days. She was supposed to leave tomorrow, but he was trying to persuade her to stay a bit longer.

She sank down on a chair beside his and calmly placed her hand on his thigh. He froze glancing down at her warm palm before turning to face her. She refused to look his way keeping her eyes and attention fixed on Niyi and their discussion.

If Niyi noticed the undercurrents and her hand on his thigh, he gave no indication of it. They continued to chat. She made good conversation and was fun to be with.

Gbenga sighed and slowly joined the conversation, the event and other concerns put away for the moment.

Hours later

Gbenga stood alone in a dark room looking out of the window at the grounds of his sprawling mansion. The carpet grass he had recently planted over the excavated area where the bunker stood had started to grow.

Before long, no one would know anything lay underneath. His errant thoughts as usual centered on Brainwave. She kept saying he should find her, but how in the world did he do that? He had been searching to the answer to that question for two months and he was still no closer to finding it.

“How do I find her? God, brainwave__ whichever one of you is closest to me__ show me how I am supposed to find her and you.”

His sad words evoked no response. Sighing he strode to the large bed behind him. Stretching out on it, he stared at the wood-grained ceiling. His eyelids fluttered as a yawn escaped from his mouth. Lying on his side, he turned and faced the wall dozing off instantly.

It seemed he had just closed his eyes when he saw her. She surged forward, a being of great power and speed shinning with golden white light. Her teeth bared as she snarled in fury bearing down on him with menace in her carriage. His heart started to race with fear and then ____

He sat up with a gasp, his breath coming in short shallow bursts. He swallowed taking a minute to calm his racing heart. His eyes hardened a second later as what he had to do became clear to him. He rose to his feet with a determined look in his eyes and made for the door…….
