“Then we fight him,” Kara’s voice came out
more steadily than she anticipated. “I don’t want to spend my life
running from him. It’s you he wants most, Dylan. It’s my job to
make sure he can’t hurt you.”

“Alright then,” Baron said with a small
grin.

“Alright,” Dylan said. She leaned forward to
kiss Kara’s cheek. Kara’s heart fluttered as Dylan’s soft lips
brushed her skin.

“Right,” Kara muttered.

There was a sharp knock on the door, and it
was pushed open. A tall blonde woman stepped in. She nodded at the
three of them.

Dylan and Baron fell back, letting the nurse
look over Kara. Kara saw Baron slip from the room, but Dylan stayed
close.

“I’ve got to take a couple small blood
samples,” the nurse warned. “You might want to shut your eyes.”

Kara did as she was told, shutting her eyes
gratefully and leaning back. She felt better, but she was still
bone weary from the healing process. Something told her she wasn’t
going to get much recuperation time before they returned to
Inbetween.
