Oh my God….I am so sorry,”  she heard a female voice say. She looked around to see a curvy brunette standing next to a dark skinned man….maybe African American? The woman was holding a glass half full of orange juice. Is that what was all over her back? “I didn’t see…I mean I did…it’s just…”

“…
it’s okay, it’s a bathing suit. It will wash off,” Natasha said standing up.

I’ll walk you to the changing rooms,” the woman said as she helped Natasha pick up her towel. Natasha smiled at her casually though she really wanted to punch her inn the face.

Thanks,” she said as she quickly walked towards the changing rooms. She rushed to one of the shower cubicles and turned on the water at full force then stood underneath the flowing streams as the orange juice washed off her back. She stood there for a few minutes before she decided  to just take the swimsuit off…which she did.

Is everything okay in there?” Natasha rolled her eyes. Why wouldn’t this woman just leave?

Everything’s fine. It washed off like I said,” Natasha replied as she put the suit back on. “The laundry people will just have to use extra bleach,” she added as she got out of the cubicle. Some strands of her hair were wet sticking on to her neck and the sides of her face.

Melinda. Melinda Osbourne,” the brunette said handing her one of the towels that were on the towel rack outside.

Natasha Black…actually Natasha Black-Schmidt.,” she said as she wiped herself down. “Still getting used to  the new name,” she said smiling.

Newly wed?” Melinda asked. She nodded.

Four days and maybe 19 hours to be exact,” Natasha said with a smile. Melinda blushed.

Guess I will be the bitch that ruined your honeymoon when you tell this story, huh?” Melinda asked with a frown. Natasha laughed and nodded.

Yeah, most probably,” she said. “But really, it’s okay. No evidence of anything that ever happened,” she added feeling a pang of guilt when she realized that the brunette was genuinely distraught over the incident. “Come on, I’m sure the boys are in a staring contest right now and they need to be saved,” Natasha said as she slipped on a bathrobe. Melinda smiled.

Strike two for me is you covering up that beautiful bathing suit because I made the waist wrap wet,” Melinda said as they walked out. Natasha laughed.

“Why thank you,” she said looking at Melinda. “But it’s chiffon. Give it a few minutes and it will be dry as sand in the Sahara,” she added as the two headed out.

Chapter 4

“That makes absolutely no sense. It is not even a word!” Natasha yelled as she looked at the word Mitchell had just come up with on the Scrabble board.

It is too!” Mitchell said faking a frown. The two were getting more acquainted with the couple that they had so unfortunately bumped into when they decided to visit the café for the first time since they got to Antigua and what Natasha had come to know was Melinda was a sweetie. She was a television producer for a travel show who was in Antigua on holiday. She had met her boyfriend Kyle on her second trip to the islands and as Natasha put it, the two were just made for each other Kyle was a brown skinned man, almost as well built as Mitchell, Natasha thought. He did not talk much but somehow Mitchell seemed to enjoy his company extensively. After the four of them laughed off the juice incident, they had decided to break the tension by having breakfast together. This later turned into lunch and dinner and now, it seemed like the two couples could not spend a day without seeing each other.

On this particular day, Mitchell had decided to have a game that called for everyone’s participation. He had suggested chess at first but Natasha wouldn’t have it.

“All the bishops and kings get me all mixed up,” Natasha had said.

Well, it’s an intelligent game,” Kyle had said. Melinda and Natasha stared daggers at him.

Are you trying to say that we are not intelligent?” Melinda asked. Kyle put his hands up in defense.

No, nothing like that,” he said laughing. “I just meant…” his voice trailed off as he looked over at Mitchell for assistance.

That we men have a different way of playing chess, that’s all,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell Schmidt to the rescue,” Natasha said looking at her husband. Kyle looked at him and mouthed a quick thank you to him. “So, what exactly are we going to do? It is too damn hot to be outside,” she asked leaning against the couch.

Well, we could go to the pool later,” Melinda said. Natasha rolled her eyes and began fanning herself using her hand.

Yeah later. But what do we do
now
,” she asked again. Melinda’s face suddenly lit up.

Scrabble,” she said looking at the three of them.

Scrabble?” Mitchell asked looking at Melinda closely.

Yes, Scrabble. Easy. Fun. Mental challenge. Everything we need right about now,” she said holding up three fingers she had used to show the advantages.

She is right. And we all know the rules,” Natasha said looking at Mitchell and Kyle who looked unsure. She noticed Mitchell had a look that told her he was about to cancel on her any minute now.” Plus, it has no kings, queens, bishops and all those Renaissance fools looking to go to war,” she added quickly. Mitchell smiled at Kyle.

She really doesn’t know any of the rules as far as chess is concerned, does she?” Kyle asked. Mitchell shook his head.

Not even one,” he said. Natasha playfully elbowed him. “What? You don’t know the rules!” Mitchell said as Natasha stood up.

Come on Melinda. Let’s go make something to drink as the two geniuses figure out how to set up the Scrabble board,” she said taking Melinda’s hand. Mitchell looked at her and smiled.

I still love you, wifey,” Mitchell called after her.

Yeah, yeah. I love you too,” Natasha said.

Ouch,” Mitchell said loud enough for her to hear. Natasha looked over her shoulder and winked at him as they disappeared around the corner.

Women, huh,” Kyle said leaning back.

Tell me about it,” Mitchell said in agreement as he stood up. “But this one woman, she just lights up my world,” he added as he walked towards their room. He disappeared briefly before he finally emerged with a Scrabble board.

You guys have been together for how long?” Kyle asked.

Married one week. Together for three years,” Mitchell answered excitedly.

Wow. The longest relationship I ever had was a year and it was like the relationship from hell,” Kyle said. Mitchell smiled and sat down.

Again, tell me about it,” Mitchell said as he spread the scrabble pieces on the table.

Please dude. What do you know? You have the perfect wife,” Kyle said. “Beautiful, sexy, intelligent….what more could you possibly ask for in a woman?” he asked.

Well, Kyle my friend, believe me when I tell you that it was not always so good,” Mitchell said looking at Kyle. “There were days I preferred to spend the night talking to a bartender and booking a room at a hotel than go back to my wife,” he added. Kyle looked at him confused.

But you have been married for a week,” Kyle said still confused. Mitchell shook his head and looked at him in shock.

Oh God, you thought I was talking about Tasha?”” he asked laughing. “She is amazing. Perfect even,” he said looking at him. “I think if you looked up perfect in the dictionary or googled the word, you’d probably find her picture,” he added in a whisper as he leaned forward.

Okay, now I am officially confused,” Kyle said as he leaned forward and picked up one of the scrabble pieces.

This is not my first marriage, you know,” Mitchell finally said.

Now that makes so much more sense,” Kyle said pointing at Mitchell who was now laughing quietly. “What happened with the first one? Not as pretty?” he asked.

Oh she was a looker, don’t get me wrong,” Mitchell said. “But she was…not in it for the right reasons,” he added. Kyle looked at him closely.

You lost me again,” he said. Mitchell took a deep breath.

Well, let’s just say that she is the kind of woman who, if I was president and she was a lesbian, she’d keep it secret for the sake of being first lady,” Mitchell explained.

So you are the president’s son or something?” Kyle said in an effort to try and understand Mitchell’s explanation. Mitchell looked at him questionably.

Why would you even ask that?” he asked looking at Kyle.

President…first lady. Your words not mine,” “Kyle said shrugging.

Okay, simply put, the whole presidential thing is to do with family fortune. I can’t believe you thought I was part of the first family…or at least the extended first family,” Mitchell said as Melinda and Natasha walked back.

Oh…you should have just said that. Talk in parables much?” Kyle asked as the girls sat down. “Hey, what happened to the drinks?” he asked as he laid eyes on the chips and dip the girls had just walked in carrying.

Here they are,” Melinda said pouring cold soda in the four glasses she had.

You know what I mean,” Mitchell said with a frown.

Well, we decided since it is only, what, two in the afternoon? Maybe we should save the good stuff for later on when you show us all the hot spots around this beautiful island,” Natasha said as she sat down next to Mitchell.

Guess you’re right,” Kyle said as he took a bite of one chip covered in dip. “And worth it,” he said as he closed his eyes. Mitchell followed suit, as did the girls.

Oh my God, this is no regular dip,” Mitchell said.

I know, right?” Melinda said beaming. “I was in love with the dip when I first came here too. Apparently, the secret is in the garlic,” she added taking another chip. Mitchell looked at Kyle and then at Natasha.

Do you mean to tell me that you make your own dips?” he asked looking at Kyle.

We like to think that the dip is the reason why Americans keep on coming back here,” Kyle said smiling. Natasha laughed.

We do love our dip,” she said. “So, what were you boys talking about when the womenfolk were busy making the delicious treats?” she asked as Melinda handed out the glasses of soda.

Mitchell was going on about being in the first family and stuff,” Kyle said without looking up.

First family? Like the president’s family?” Melinda asked surprised. Natasha elbowed Mitchell again.

That’s the man I married. Always making little figurative phrases,” Natasha said. Melinda’s eyes suddenly grew wild.

Wait a minute,” she said looking at Mitchell. “Figurative talk…your last name is Schmidt, right?” she asked excitedly. Natasha looked at her surprised.

Yes. Nice to meet you for the second time,” she said. “What’s the point of this little trip down memory lane?” she asked.

Like Schmidt, Nolan Schmidt the big tycoon?” Melinda asked.

Seems I can never really hide from anyone nowadays,” Mitchell said. “But guilty,” he said as he put an arm around Natasha’s shoulders.

Am sorry but I am not so sure I understand what is going on here,” Kyle said as his gaze shift from Melinda to Mitchell.

Okay, I don’t want you to think I’m a stalker or some shit like that,” Melinda started.

Okay, that’s a little freaky that you chose those particular words to start your speech,” Mitchell said. Melinda laughed as she shook her head.

I’m sorry. It’s just that before I started working for the travel diaries I was supposed to cover your wedding. Media houses were calling it the American Royal Wedding,” Melinda said laughing. “But when TMZ got the deal…well, you know, the wedding would have been my big break,” she added.

TMZ did get the scoop,” Natasha said.

Wait, big break? Honey, I thought you loved doing the travel show,” Kyle said looking surprised.

I do, God knows I do. It’s just that at some point I was into broadcast…maybe something behind the anchor desk,” Melinda said. “It was to be…” her voice trailed off as she took a long sip of her drink. “But I not only produce the show, I own it. So it was a win-win,” she added with a smile.

I’m sure you do,” Natasha said, a sympathetic look on her face.

No for real. I came up with the idea and everything. The network wanted it so much they decided to retain me and pay me a lump sum plus royalties,” Melinda said raising her glass. Kyle planted a kiss on her forehead and smiled at her.

Yeah, thank God. If it were not for that show the two of us would have never met,” Kyle said with a smile. Natasha and Mitchell smiled at each other.

That’s enough, love birds. What are we doing? Boys versus girls or which couple sucks more?” Mitchell asked. Natasha and Melinda exchanged a “oh no he didn’t” look.

Remember when they thought chess was too quote unquote, intelligent for us?” Natasha asked. Melinda nodded.

All too well,” Melinda answered.

Well, I guess that answers your question, Mitchell Schmidt. It’s boys versus girls and which pair is going to whoop your ass,” Natasha said as she switched seats with Melinda. Mitchell looked at them and smiled.

Fine. We’ll go first,” he said as he carefully spelled out the word “aint” on the board. Natasha looked at the board and then at Mitchell.

What language are we playing in? Vietnamese?” she asked laughing.

English. Aint is a perfectly legit word,” Mitchell argued. Melinda suddenly burst out laughing.

Honey, as an African American I have to tell you that my community has worked so hard to terrorize the English language,” Natasha said looking at Mitchell apologetically. “That is an example of how good we are at language terrorism,” she added pointing at the board.

This couple is going to kick your ass,” Melinda said giving Natasha a high five.

Ain’t that the truth,” Kyle said looking at Mitchell who was smiling back at him. “So anyway, you know how the two of us met. How did you two meet?” he asked as he looked up at Natasha.

It’s not as magical as your tourist meets local boy story,” Mitchell said. “Well, it’s the usual,” he added. Melinda looked at Natasha.

What’s the usual? Coffee shop?” Melinda asked.

Oh no. Mitchell just seems to lose the romance so soon into the marriage,” Natasha said. “I was going for an interview at NSCS,” she said as a big smile played on her face.

The government navy intelligence thing? Cool, I’ve seen that show. I didn’t think it was real, though,” Kyle said as he took a handful of chips. The three looked at him surprised.
