                                                     Chapter 8

Captain
Tony’s is one of my favorite places to hang out, it is one of the few places in town that isn’t full of tourist every day and the cook makes some of the best conch fritters on the island. Almost every day of the week Louie and I would meet there after work, have a couple of beers and shoot some pool before going home for the evening. However, today was different, today I needed my best friend to help me get out of a jam. This would be a new roll for Louie. Since he is the one who is always getting himself into trouble. And I am the one that ends up getting him out of whatever mess he manage to get himself into that week. But he is a good friend and even though we didn’t always agree about everything, I knew that I could count on him in a pinch.

Hell I remember one time a couple months ago, Louie and I were at a club in Miami, it was still early so we were shooting some eight ball back in the poolroom. I had a money game going with a couple of the local pool sharks and I was doing a pretty good job of taking their money. Louie was sitting at the bar nursing a cold beer and there was a hot brunette sitting next him watching me and this other dude shoot pool. After winning three games in a row at a hundred dollars a pop, I told the want-a-be pool hustler that I was going to grab a beer and I would be right back. As I was approaching the pool table with a beer in each hand, the want-a-be pool shark confronts me, fist clenched, chest pump
ed up like a rooster, yelling at the top of his lungs, accusing me of flirting with his wife. Of course, I didn’t have a clue as to what he was talking about. In a flash a dozen scenarios ran through my mind. This is the first time I have ever been to this club, yes I smiled at a few girls tonight, but I don’t remember flirting with any of them. Now this guy was about six foot tall, slim, trim, muscular, and foaming at the mouth with anger. I could tell from his body language that he might throw a punch at any moment. I knew that I could knock him out if I wanted to, hell I was twice his size and a fairly decent boxer. But I still wasn’t sure why he was so pissed off at me. So I took the high road, taking two steps back, giving him a chance to think about what he was getting himself into. Just when I thought the situation was hopeless, the wife came to the rescue. Turns out that it was one of the hot brunettes sitting at the bar next to Louie. Before I knew it, the two of them were yelling at each other, so I took the opportunity to step away and let the lovebirds settle their indifference’s. The club was starting to get crowded and the D.J was cranking up the music, so it was difficult for me to hear their argument, but from what I could understand, hubby pick the wrong guy to start a fight with.  It turned out that Louie was hitting on his wife and of course, my best bud was nowhere to be seen. That was the last time I let Louie get me in that kind of situation.

I was sitting back by the pool tables in my usual spot when I spotted Louie as he opened the old rustic front door. He stood in the doorway for moment allowing his eyes adjust to the dimly lit bar. He looked like he is worn out from working all morning building lobster traps. I wave at
him to come back and join me.  He sat down and mention that he only had an hour before he had to be back to work. So he called the waitress over so we could order some food.

Sally showed up at our table with a couple of cold Budweiser’s in her hand.

“Hi guys are you going to have the same as usual today or are you going to shock me and have something different.” She grinned and cocked her hips to one side, still enjoying her moment of humorous sarcasm.   I looked at the good-looking woman standing in front of me.

“Yes Sally, we will have the usual, unless Captain Tony has gotten wise in his old age and added you to the menu.” I said with a smirk on my face.

“Oh, you are hilarious Chris, like I have not heard that line before. If you are trying to impress me Chris, I think you need to go home and lookup some new pickup lines on the internet. Damn Sally, you are so cute that I can’t stand it, will you write that down on a napkin for me so I don’t forget.

“Chris if you want to ask me out on a proper dinner date then just say so. I would love to go out with you, I think you are cute, who knows, you might even get lucky. But if you think you’re going to get in my pants for the price of a cheeseburger then you must have bumped your head on the front door as you walked in here.” She couldn’t hold back the girlish giggle any longer as she turned her head trying to hide her smile.

“Damn Sally I wish you would have told me that a long time ago, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time ordering off the menu, when all I had to do was asked and I could get prime rib.”

“Give me a break Chris, you and y
our sidekick come in here every day and order a damn cheeseburger. Never anything different, Oh’ I take that back, Louie like’s fries with his burger.” I started to defend myself but before I could say a word I was stopped by the almighty hand in my face.

“Oh… no you don’t Chris” she says with her index finger wiggling back and forth in a slow motion. Do you really expect me to believe that you like prime rib?” I couldn’t help but smirk after I was over the tongue lashing this dazzling woman had just given me.

“Alright Sally, you caught me, I meant to say prime beef.” Her mouth dropped open in disbelief and her demeanor turned from flirtatious back to sarcasm in a matter of seconds.

“Now you’re comparing me to a cow, Damn Chris you sure know how to make a girl feel good about herself.” She pouted, pushing her full lower lip out as far as she could, over emphasizing the picture perfect pout. It didn’t take me long to figure out that I had stuck my big foot in my mouth again.

“Listen Sally I would love to take you out on a date but do you think I could get a rain check. I might be going out of town for a couple of weeks.”

“Rain check! What the hell do you think I am, an item on sale at one of the local meat market
s? Do I look like the type of girl that needs to take a rain check?” she says mischievously as she slowly slid the palms of her hands down both sides of her body, from her exquisite breast to her curvaceous hips.

“Chris, are you just trying to let me down easy?” She folded her arms across her chest and started tapping the floor with her shoe. I swear, I will never understand women, her mood went from flirtatious to, I want to scratch your eyes out, then to the, you hurt my feelings pout in a matter of seconds, I’m dumbfounded, hell I don’t even know which attitude is real. So I took the high road and tried to save the day.

“Are you kidding me Sally, there is no way in hell that I want to screw things up with you. I just have to go to Coco Beach and sign up for the fall semester.” Louie looked a little over whelmed by my statement.

“Damn Chris you didn’t tell me you were thinking of going to school in Coco Beach.” I could see the hurt on my friends face, I should have told him before now. Louie and I have been friends since grade school.

“No Louie I haven’t told anybody yet, I wanted to pass my entry exams before I told anyone that I was going away to school. Besides Coco Beach is only about six hours away and I will probably be home every weekend.”  Sally was still standing there with her arms across her chest and tapping the floor with her left high heel shoe.

Are you asking me out Chris? Or do you want to wait until you find out if you’re accepted at that school in Coco Beach and then ask me out for dinner.” Damn, what do I do now? I have been flirting with Sally forever, wouldn’t you know it, she picks today, of all days, to decide to take me serious. I could see that Louie was anxious about being late for work as he tried to catch my attention by looking at his watch.

“Ah come on Chris, how on earth can you be sitting there in front of a gorgeous woman like Sally and make her wait for two weeks to find out if you are going to ask her out on date. Besides If you want to talk with me about that business deal, I only have around thirty minutes left on my lunch break before I have to get back to work.” I knew Louie was right about me asking Sally out for dinner, so I looked up at her with the biggest smile I could muster.

“Sally would you like to go out to dinner with me tonight?” Damn that sounded more like a marriage proposal than an invitation to dinner. I better watch myself with this girl, she hangs on every word I say, my mouth could get me in a lot of trouble with her. She didn’t hesitate a minute with her answer.

“I would love to go out with you Chris. What time would you like to pick me up?” she says with a tinge of excitement in her voice.

“I suppose eight o’clock if that time will work for you.” She bats her eyes at me.

“Eight o’clock is fine with me. What should I wear?”

“Why don’t you surprise me, just make sure it is short and sexy. High heels would be a big plus, I love women that were high heels.” Sally has a great pair of legs and I couldn’t help checking them out when I mentioned the high heels. Note to self, be careful, long good-looking legs will get you in trouble every time.

“It sounds like you’re planning a night of dinner and dancing Chris. I’ll be ready at eight, here is my address and phone number. Please call me if you are going to be late.”

“Don’t you worry your pretty little head about that Sally, I will be knocking on your door at eight o’clock.” Sally gave me one last stunning smile and pranced away like a schoolgirl going out on her first date.

“Damn Chris, you’re my idol.” Louie sighs as he watches Sally’s behind sway back and forth seductively as she walked through the kitchen doors.

“Chris, what was so damn important that it couldn’t wait until I got off work.”

‘Well Louie I was up at Grassy Key swimming with this girl I met this weekend and we found a bale of pot.” He looks dumbfounded, as if I just said something really stupid.

“So, lucky you. What the hell is wrong with finding a bale of weed? He smirks. Damn Chris, every man should have your kind of problems. If I‘m not mistaken, you just told me that you met a beautiful women, you probably got laid, then you found a bale of smoke. By any chance did you win the lotto too?”

“No, Louie, I didn’t win the damn lotto” I snap, expressing a bit too much anger towards my friend.

“I swear Chris, you could step in a pile of dog shit and somehow or another end up sleeping with the girl that was walking the dog. Then you have the nerve to tell me that you have a problem. Tell me Chris, was your problem blonde, brunette or a redhead.” He laughs at his own sense of humor.

“It is a problem Louie, you know that I don’t smoke that shit much less know anybody who sells it.”

“Gee Chris I smoke pot but I cannot think of anyone that deals in pounds much less buys bales. I am afraid that you are on your own when it comes to that much weed.

But if its good shit I would be happy to take a few ounces off your hands if you are willing to front me until payday.”

“Sure Louie you can have a few ounces but I am not willing to sell them to you.”

“Damn Chris we have known each other since grade school and you still don’t trust me.” I could see the hurt and disappointment in his eyes.

“You know that is not true Louie, I don’t trust anyone when it comes to me going to jail. That is why I am looking for someone who already deals in pounds so I don’t have to sell it myself.”

“Hey Chris, I know somebody that you probably haven’t thought about calling and I know they deal in weight.”

“Who are you talking about?”

“Dave and his brother Jimmy, up around Orlando, don’t you remember stopping off at their farm last year to drop off that package for your dad. Hell, I bet they can take it off your hands, and actually, I think I still have t
heir number in my cell phone.”  I did remember Dave, my father had been friends with him and his brother in the service.  I remember when he gave me that package, he told me that I should only deal with Dave, and he if I ever needed help with anything that I could trust him. Well I got the number from Louie before he left to go back to work.

“Dave, hi this is Chris, I am Mike’s son we met last winter.”

“Hey Chris, What’s up?”

“Well I am going up to Coco Beach this week to register for the fall semester and I was wondering if I could stop by, maybe we could grab a beer or have lunch. What do you say?”

“Yeah we could get together, when are you going to be here?”

“I am heading up there on Wednesday, but I have entry exams all day Thursday.”

“Do you have a place to stay?”

“No, I have not made any plans yet.”

“Hey, Chris I have an idea, we are having a big BBQ at the farm this weekend would you like to grab a girl and spend the week here, I have plenty of room since Jimmy got married and bought his own house.”

“Thanks Dave that would help me out a lot, so I will give you a call when I get in town.”

“Sounds like a plan and don’t forget you can invite some of your friends if you want, especially if they happen to be girls.”

“All right Dave I will see what I can do and again thanks for the invitation.”

Damn, it is almost two o’clock and I am at least ten minutes away from the Fisherman’s Café, I better call Megan and tell her I am running late. The phone kept ringing and just when I thought it would go to voice mail she answered my call.
