“You don’t react that way when I touch you.”

“You’re the only one.”

“Because I was there with you, maybe?”

“Yeah. Maybe.”

“I’ll help you through this. We can beat it, I know we can.”

“What happens when you leave?” she asked, giving voice to her biggest fear.

“Look at me.” He gazed into her eyes. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“I can’t expect you to stay here, put the rest of your life on hold, just for me. That’s not fair to either of us.”

“What part of I’m not leaving don’t you get?”

“But…”

“I love you. I don’t plan on leaving you ever.” He kissed her again, one hand holding her head while the other teased her breasts. “I plan on making love to you for the rest of my life.”

She kissed him back, her hands clutching him to her. “I love you too. I didn’t realize how much until you gave me your hand to help me out of that stupid row boat the other morning.”

Smitty let out a deep breath and rested his forehead against hers. “Thank God.” He kissed her again and again, whispering, “Thank God.” Over and over again.

“I was so afraid you were going to get shot because of me. I took your Jeep so you’d be safe.”

“The only time I feel safe is when I have you this close,” he told her, pushing his cock into her. “Don’t leave me behind again. If you have to deal with something, we do it together.”

She smiled and wrapped her legs around his waist. “Yeah?”

He kissed her. “Yeah.”

“Then give me what you’ve got, soldier.”

Two days later, after giving her statement to the Sheriff, calming her family’s fears and complaints, and releasing Virgil from the hospital into the Sheriff’s custody, she and Smitty paused outside the backdoor to her clinic.

“JD, what are you doing here?” Abby asked.

He was sleeping on the doorstep again.

He cracked one eye open, then the second, both bloodshot. “’bout time you showed up.”

“Virgil’s in jail, so is there another ghost who wants to kill me?”

“Nah, just making sure all the loose ends are tied up,” he replied, pushing himself into a sitting position.

“What loose ends?”

He squinted at the pair of them. “When’s the wedding?”

“What?” Her faced heated up. “Oh, ah, we haven’t…I mean…”

“Probably next spring,” Smitty said with a cough. She turned to stare at him. “I haven’t asked her yet.”

“Well, what’s the hold up, boy?”

He shrugged. “There hasn’t been a good time.”

“Bah, one minute is as good as the next. You love her, she loves you, blah, blah, blah.”

Abby looked at Smitty. He looked back.

“Oh for Christ’s sake.” JD rolled his eyes. “She’s going to say yes.”

“I am?”

“Don’t be daft girl, of course you are.”

Abby couldn’t hide a grin. “JD, you’re absolutely right.” She turned to Smitty and said, “Yes.”

“Excellent, glad we’ve got that all figured out. I’m going to find me a softer bed.” He got none too steadily to his feet and wandered down the alley.

“Yes?” Smitty asked, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her against his body. “If I had known it was going to be this easy I would have asked you a couple of days ago.”

“Two days ago I probably would have said no just for fun.”

“Oh yeah?” He put both arms around her and nuzzled her neck. “Two days ago I probably would have just thrown you over my shoulder and carried you off to do naughty things to you.”

“Hmm, that sounds like fun,” she said, her eyes drifting closed.

“Wanna go inside and play doctor, doc?”

“Is that your way of offering to show me your etchings?”

“I want to show you a whole lot more than that.”

“Sounds like something I want to see.” She laughed and whispered in his ear, “I love you.”

Jack Daniels watched the two love birds giggle and kiss their way through the door.

He sighed.
Mission
accomplished. These two had been tough to straighten out and get together, now it was time to get started on his next project.

There was never any rest for the wicked.
