I whimper but nod my head. Gavin gets up and carries me into the bathroom. True to his words, he made me his in every room in the new apartment that night. He also made me his in every way possible. Much like a dog who has marked his territory; I fall into a deep sleep cradled in his arms. There is not a place on my body that hasn’t been rubbed, kissed, licked and he has officially penetrated every orifice in my body. Well maybe not every orifice, I think my ears are still virgin.

When I head home to get ready for work the next morning, I feel like every muscle in my body has been trying out for an Iron Man competition.

CHAPTER 6

“I don’t understand what the big deal is, Danielle, I am dating him, not ratting out the whole city.” I screech

“That is not the point Jordan. Everyone knows that if he is working and you are out and about that you will get stopped. Even if he is just trying to see you for a few minutes,
all of our friends are worried they will get taken in for underage drinking or drugs.”

“That is just fucked up. You guys should all know me better than that. What am I supposed to do tonight since no one wants to risk getting arrested?”

“My guess would be either head home or go stay at Gavin’s.”

“It will do me no good to stay at his apartment if he is working all night. You guys can all kiss my ass. I am not a ‘narc’ and if you can’t differentiate the two then maybe I shouldn’t want to hang out with you.”

“Jordan, that is not it. You just…”

“Fuck it!” I cut her off quickly. “I’ll call Shannon and we will head up to Raleigh and hit City Limits.”

I slam the phone down before I quickly pick it back up and call Shannon.

“Hello?”

“Hey, do you and Beth have any plans tonight?” I ask when Shannon picks up the telephone.

“No, not really. One of the guys asked if we wanted to go to the party but we are both getting tired of doing the same old thing every weekend.”

“Yeah, me too. Apparently I’ve been blacklisted here because of Gavin. I was wondering if you two wanted to ride with me to City Limits?”

“Hang on and I’ll ask.” She says before I hear the phone muffle and listen to her ask Beth if she wants to go. “Yeah, we’ll go. We need to get out of this town for a night. Do you want to drive?”

“Yeah I’ll drive, I am not going to drink much tonight anyway. I’ll be there in about an hour.”

“Okay, we’ll be here ready.” She answers before she hangs up the phone.

What should have only
taken an hour turned into an hour and a half. I got hung up on what to wear to a club. It has been a while since I have been out to the club and the last time, I was all sexed up and on the prowl. Now that I feel like I have a steady man in my life, looking like sex on a stick is not at the top on my agenda. I finally settle on a pair of jeans with black heeled boots and a cowl neck tank top, not over the top but also not slumming, plus the outfit will allow for me to dance and not be uncomfortable.

“Are you guys ready to go?” I ask stepping inside their front door. I didn’t even turn the car off when I parked in their driveway.

“Yeah! Let’s go”

Beth locks the door behind them and we make our way to the car. I notice Shannon is all sexed up tonight which is unusual seeing she has a steady boyfriend and is usually the one slumming when we go out.

“Damn Shannon, what’s with the outfit?” I ask.

“Fucking Mike pissed me off. I am so done with him this time. He and his friends can all go to hell.”

I giggle at her words only because we hear this from her just about once a month. Tomorrow, they will be all cuddled on the couch like nothing ever happened. Oh well, to each their own, I guess.

City Limits is the best club in the area because it does not discriminate. One side is a country/western bar while the other side has dance music for the younger generation. They even have another smaller room attached that caters to techno. A little something for everyone, which means that the place is packed with horney men and women all looking for a hookup. The only thing this place is missing is the Rock-n-Roll/Metal room.

We decide on the country/western side since we all enjoy line dancing and you don’t have men trying to grind all up on you like in the dance club. Plus I like to get tipsy and watch the drunks try to ride the mechanical bull they have in the corner. It never fails, there is always that one girl who is way too drunk that gets on it with a spaghetti-strap tank top on and before you know it her tits are flying out. You would think they would learn.

After spending the evening drinking and dancing till our hearts content, we head back toward our hometown which is only thirty minutes away. While I have had a few drinks, I am mostly sober due to
alternating water and alcohol and dancing. Shannon is piss drunk and now sits in the back seat bawling her eyes out while Beth sits beside me in the passengers seat teasing her and making things worse.

“You know that if Mike would have gone to the bar with us he would have taken that guy home with him.” Beth announces.

“Shut up!” Shannon sobs, “He would not.”

“I would hope Mike wouldn’t have taken that guy home with him, I don’t think Mike swings that way.” I giggle out over Shannon’s slobbery outburst.

“Shannon, what do you think Mike does when he is out with the guys; sit around with his thumb up his ass and pine away for you?” Beth accuses. “No! They go to the strip club and ogle over have naked sluts.”

“No they don’t. They just hang out at Brandon’s house and shoot basketball.” Shannon answers.

“Yeah, I bet. How many basketball players have you ever seen play a game when they are so damn drunk they can’t hit the side of a barn while leaning up against it.”

I laugh so hard at that I choke. I reach into the console for a tissue or napkin or something to wipe my teary eyes when I run off the road. I quickly correct as my stomach does back-flips.

“Fuck, Jordan, you made me spill my drink.” Beth protests.

“Damn it Beth, I thought you got rid of all that shit. Now my car smells like beer.” I bitch.

“That’s the least of your problems now.” I hear coming from the sniffling mess that is Shannon.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Duh? Blue Lights.” Shannon answers.

I turn my head to see a car following close behind me with rotating blue lights. “No worries, that is probably just Gavin, making his nightly check up.” I say.

“Look, I may be a drunken blubbering mess but that is not Gavin. We are still outside the city limits, that is either Highway Patrol or Sherriff’s Department and last I checked Gavin works for the City Police Department.” Shannon states matter-of-factly.

“Fuck!” I murmur.

An hour later and I am so screwed. Underage possession of alcohol was not on my agenda tonight. This is just great. Not only am I gonna get it from Gavin but my own cousins betrayed me. When I had to take a breathalyzer it was fine. I had consumed enough water and danced so much that I didn’t blow anything. What screwed me up was the alcohol in the car. Since no one would cop to it, I ended up with the ticket because I was driving and the car is in my name.

Thanks so much cuz. What ever happened to blood taking up for blood?

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” My mom asks as we sit at the kitchen table and look over the paperwork I need before I leave on Monday. Today is Friday, my eighteenth birthday and I am sitting home with my parents.

“Yes, I need to
get out of this town. If I stay here, I will never get out of this town and probably end up beside Aiden.”

“But joining the military; don’t you think that is a bit drastic?” mom asks.

“No, I think it is exactly what I need.”

“And what about Gavin?” she asks.

“I haven’t told him yet. I care too much to see him hurt. This is gonna hurt him bad. I think it is better if I just go. That way he can move on with his life and I will not be here holding him back or causing him problems because his underage girlfriend got a ticket for “Underage Possession of Alcohol.”

“I think you are making a big mistake Jordan. Gavin is a good man, he will understand what happened. He is not going to hold this against you. Talk to him, please?”

“Mom, I can’t. This is too much. Please just leave it alone and let me do what I feel I have to do.” I plead.

“Fine.” She sighs in defeat.

Monday morning I leave for Boot Camp and a chance at possibly a new me to go along with my new life. I never do contact Gavin to let him know what is going on. I just disappear.

CHAPTER 7

1999

Monday afternoon, I get off work early and go by my mom’s work to talk for a minute before picking the kids up from grandma’s. This is the start of my second week back to work after giving birth to Renee. It took me a little longer on my recovery this time because with this being my third child, I decided on tubal ligation. Three children under the age of five is enough to drive anybody crazy. Hell, if it weren’t for my grandma babysitting for me I don’t think I could afford to work with the cost of daycare.

My husband, Greg, is meeting me at mom’s and we are going to ride together to pick the kids up and head home.
I am sitting in her office when Greg comes in and leans over to kiss me on the forehead.

“Are you ready to go?” He asks.

“Yeah, I was just talking to mom about how my first week of work went last week. She spent the weekend at the lake and was checking up on me.”

“No, I was checking up on my grandbabies. I just stay so busy I have to get the bits and pieces I can from you most of the time.” My mom laughs out as her desk phone rings. She looks at the caller-id and smiles. “Well now you can leave and I can find out myself, that is your grandmother now.”

“Ok, tell her we are on the way now.” I call over my shoulder as we walk out her office door. We don’t even make it out of the dealership when I hear my mom screaming and crying, calling my name. I turn to find her running toward us with her pocketbook and keys.

“Mom?”

“Get in the car, now. Something’s wrong with Renee. She said she isn’t breathing.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” Greg asks.

“Just get in the car.” She snaps.

I drop everything and start running.
Mom jumps in the driver seat while I hit the passenger seat and Greg jumps in the back. None of us have even buckled our seatbelts by the time mom screeches tires and jumps out into traffic without even looking. Before we get to the stoplight that is turning yellow, mom turns on her hazard lights and lays on the horn as she blows through what is now a very red light.

“Mom, it’s not going to do us any good if we don’t make it to grandma’s. Slow down and buckle up.”

Swerving all over the road still speeding, mom reaches back, grabs her seatbelt and buckles it. Eight minutes. Eight minutes flat. That is all the time it took for mom to make it to my grandmas house when normally it takes twenty from moms work. Speeding up the dirt driveway we pull up behind an ambulance and a few police cars.

I look to see my grandma slumped on the porch steps talking to two uniformed officers. I jump out of the passengers seat before mom even gets the car in park.

“Where is she?’ I scream and notice another uniformed officer make his way in our direction.

“Ma’am, we need you to calm down a little and come over here and talk with us for a moment.” The officer says as he approaches me.

“Where is she? I am her mother, you cannot hide her from me.” I cry out.

“Ma’am, she is in the ambulance. The paramedics are working on getting her ready for transport to the hospital. The officer states as the side door of the ambulance opens and a young looking female gets out, closes the door and moves towards me.

“Hi there, my name is Lindsey and we are getting ready to transport your daughter to Sandhills. Do you know where that is?” She asks me.
