Chapter 1: Spirituality & Health

'This particular assessment guide was recommended as preparation for a visiting prayer ministry. While most spiritual assessment guides do not include such
lists of occult practices, perhaps they should. About half of the members of this
congregation who completed the assessment guide indicated that they had tried
various occult practices. Almost all of them were sensing some sort of continuing negative effects from these experiences. They probably would never have
mentioned them if not asked directly.

Many nurses who practice Therapeutic Touch have told me that they do not
usually inform patients but practice the technique on patients who are asleep or
unconscious.

"The laying on of hands first appears in the Old Testament, where it was commonly used to confer a blessing (see Gen 48:14). In the New Testament the laying on of hands by anyone other than Jesus (see Mk 5:23; 6:5; Lk 13:13) was
used primarily for the ordination of church leaders or in connection with the
gift of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 6:5-6; 8:18; 13:3; 19:6). Acts 28:8 is one exception, where Paul uses the laying on of hands for healing. In Acts 4:30 the disciples pray assuming that God is stretching forth his hand to heal. The practice of
physically touching a person while praying for healing has continued throughout church history and been incorporated into the liturgies of many Christian
traditions. The relationship of the person laying on hands is one of petitioner,
not channeler or manipulator.
