ROCKY MOUNTAINS (ROCKIES)

The Rocky Mountains stretch from the U.S. border with Mexico to the Yukon Territory in northern Canada. Their peaks form the backbone of the Continental Divide, separating the Great Plains from the Pacific Coast. This range also separates the rivers which flow eastward into the Atlantic from those which flow westward into the Pacific. JAKE thinks that the mountains beyond THUNDERCLAP must look like the Rocky Mountains. In actuality, the peaks of the DISCORDIA resemble the WHITE MOUNTAINS of MAINE and NEW HAMPSHIRE.

After the bloody Eucharist served to him by BARLOW the VAMPIRE in ’SALEM’S LOT, MAINE, FATHER CALLAHAN was so desperate to leave town that he claims he would even have fled to Hot Burgoo, if he could have hopped on a bus heading in that direction. I don’t know whether this place exists, but I can define
burgoo
for you. A burgoo is a hot soup made from chicken, beef, and vegetables. It is cooked for several hours so that the flavors blend and the consistency becomes stew-like. According to the burgoo Web site (yes, there is one), burgoo was probably originally just a thin gruel served by sailors in the seventeenth century. Early burgoos probably also included such tantalizing ingredients as squirrel. V:262

THERMOPYLAE

The pass of Thermopylae is located in Greece; it leads between mountains and the sea. Although much wider now, in ancient times it was (at its narrowest) only twenty-five feet across. In 480

, the pass of Thermopylae was the site of a famous confrontation between the Greeks and the Persians. Although they were vastly outnumbered, the Greek defenders held the pass against a huge army of invaders. Eventually, all the Greeks were betrayed and killed, but their stand was heroic. JAKE’s DIXIE PIG battle strategy is based on the Greek plan used at Thermopylae. Luckily, Jake doesn’t die.
