They snuggled and then he asked, “Do you want to go
back to Arkansas? Your shop is there.
I
will if you want.”
She considered it and shook her head. “You wouldn’t
like it there, not for long.
You belong
here.
I can keep the shop and let Catie
run it.
Maybe she’ll want to buy it
someday. All I want to be with you, Santiago.”
Pleasure flushed his face and he smiled. “You could
open another florist shop, maybe.”
Sara touched his cheek. “I don’t think I even want
to, Santiago. Since I’ve learned dreams can come true, I want to be a teacher,
use my teaching degree after all this time.”
“
Si,
you
can.
Let’s get married first, though. Is
tomorrow too soon?”
As a teenager, she’d known what she wanted, a church
wedding with Santiago waiting at the altar.
She’d chosen colors, flowers, bridesmaids, and a cake.
Now, none of the trappings mattered, nothing
but the man and the vows.
Sara laughed. “A little bit but give me a few weeks,
time to heal and time to plan.
Then
we’ll get married, Santiago.
And find
another apartment or a house...”
His grin broadened. “And I can go back to being a
cop so I can afford one.”
“No one in M13 will be after you for what you did?”
It was the one worry lingering in her mind.
“No,” he said. “I told you, back in the hospital.
It’s covered. Javier is dead and any idea he was me, Santiago, has been
debunked.
It’s over and I’m good.
I mean, I’ll still be a cop, there’s always
going to be a certain amount of risk and danger but no more than ordinary.”
“Good,” Sara said. “I mean, I don’t like danger but
at least the gang threat is in the past.”
Their eyes met and they burst into joyful laughter.
Love filled the room and when Sara laid her head against his chest, she
listened to his heartbeat as their breaths drew in tandem.
“
Te
amo, mi corazon.”
“Te amo, la
muñequita.”
The future lived and so would they.
