Realisation slowly seeped in. She had been bought and paid for. The signs that her father’s fortune had not survived the depredations of the Vicomte de Valenne had been obvious since before her mother’s death. But, in the last week, the meagre fare they used to dine on had been replaced with lavish dishes. The Vicomte could again afford to host raucous gatherings of his friends, with footmen, clad in new livery, carrying in bottle after bottle of burgundy and brandy long into the night. Her bride price had given her stepfather the life he wanted. Any further appeal to him would be useless. In two weeks’ time the Vicomte would carry out his threat to drag her to the church to be married by the drunken priest.
Her only hope lay in making D’Arly withdraw the offer of marriage. The Marquis would pull out of this monstrous bargain if she did something so outrageous, so infamous there could be no recovery. The Marquis wanted to take her virginity. She would deprive him of the chance and secure her freedom at the same time.
Her stepfather would be furious, she had no doubt, and his fury would include beating her, but she had survived his fists before. When he had assuaged his temper, he would banish her to one of his neglected country estates, where she could live in contented seclusion.
She had two weeks to concoct a plan.
