“Do you ever work?” I joke and flash him a wide grin. “Maybe next time I’ll clean naked. That’ll distract you. Voy a ser tu criada coqueta.”
I’ll be your flirty maid.

My attempt to be cute and coy works because a moment later, he’s shoved me to my knees, right there in the middle of the kitchen, his supper forgotten. He rips open his fly and yanks down his pants, releasing his engorged cock and ramming it down my throat. I dig my nails into his thighs and take him deep, just the way he likes it. If he comes down my throat, then I’ve done my job.

All part of the plan.

He thrusts into my face, forcing the back of my head against the cabinet behind me and begins brutally fucking my mouth. Hot tears streak from my eyes but I take it. Because I have to. When I hear his desperate groan, I prepare my throat and let his hot seed run down the back of it. His cock finally stops twitching and he slips from my mouth, my slobber still tethering us together.

“You really are trying to be the perfect wife,” he says with a half grin and ruffles my hair like I’m a damn dog. “Good girl.”

I smile as he pulls his pants back up, grabs the tray, and heads for the basement.

Don’t think about it.

Closing my eyes, I remain still for a few minutes to compose myself. He’s down there now. Eating. In his fucked up little cave.

Don’t fucking think about it!

I grit my teeth to keep from screaming in frustration because I can’t
not
think about it. No matter how strong I try to be, there are some things I can’t block out. It’s an impossible feat. Nobody is that strong. Not even me.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

I pop my eyes open and quickly stand up. Logan’s down in the basement so I know he can’t hear the door. If he happens to look at his phone, he’ll see me open the door on the camera feed but something tells me he’ll be too preoccupied.

Smoothing my hair down and taking a calming breath, I affix a smile and prepare myself to greet whoever is at the door. He’d warned me that we may start having unwanted visitors soon and to always be on my game. I rush over to the front door and open it quickly, prepared to send the visitors on their way.

Logan’s napping
, I’ll tell them.
Come visit another time
, I’ll say.

I half expect to see his neighbor Ruby from down the road who likes to deliver casseroles from time to time because she thinks he’s a lonely bachelor. But instead, I lock eyes with
him
.

Donovan Jayne.

His grey-blue eyes widen momentarily before his gaze hardens. “Where in the fuck have you been for the last three years, Nadia? The letter you sent explaining how you needed to ‘go find yourself’ was bullshit, wasn’t it?”

It was complete bullshit. He’s right. I take a step back and glance over his shoulder. Thankfully, Mamá isn’t with him. I don’t think I could take seeing her. Not after so long. It would break me and I absolutely cannot break. Not when I’m so close.

“I’m in love and we’re getting married,” I blurt out, ignoring his mentioning the letter, the quiver in my voice belying my words.

He scowls and shakes his head. “Not to him you’re not. Not with Logan fucking Baldwin. Over my dead body!”

“Please,” I beg and hold my hands up defensively. “Just leave,
mi cielo
.”

His entire body freezes at my words. After Kasey was taken all those years ago, Donovan had made good on his promise to help me search for her. He’d spent an ungodly amount of money on private investigators and donations to the police department, so they could utilize the very best search methods at their disposal. He protected me when I needed it most as a young woman. I’d never spoken against him again. Our relationship developed into…a very close one.

I love Donovan and owe him a lot.

Everything in fact.

Which is why I need him to get the hell out of here before he ruins it all.

“Donovan, please,” I try again, my voice growing shrill with anxiety. “I’m okay. I promise. Confia en mi.”
Trust me.

Ignoring my words, he storms inside the house and draws me into his arms. His embrace is greedy and starved. But none of that matters now because I have a job to do. Selfish for one brief second of happiness though, I inhale his clean scent and let it take root in my lungs. When he starts pressing kisses into my hair, I clutch onto the back of his suit jacket and take a welcome reprieve of a few more seconds with him.

He’s the only comfort in this world I can physically touch.

All of my other comforts are just out of reach.

“You’re coming home, baby. Now.” His voice is a possessive growl and he pulls away to stare down at me. “Grab your purse or whatever. I’ll take you back home.”

I’m already shaking my head before he even gets the words out. “N-N-No! I love Logan and am marrying him!”

His face falls, devastation contorting his features, but when I hear heavy footsteps approaching, he snaps his gaze to Logan who I can sense with every part of my being as he enters the room. Donovan’s face turns murderous and his entire body tenses with rage.

“You motherfucker!” Donovan roars and pushes past me, charging for Logan.

I shriek and scramble out of the way. Logan, somehow seems to seethe with unleashed fury. Having Donovan on his turf is too close for comfort.

Donovan manages to swing a fist at Logan but he’s not quick enough. Logan ducks out of the way and shoves Donovan from him. He grunts, quickly facing Logan again and charges. “You can’t marry her because she’s mine!”

Logan snarls and his fist connects with Donovan’s jaw, a loud crack echoing in the room. I should help Donovan but I’m not about to get in the middle of two furious storms raging against each other. “She’s a grown-ass woman now and certainly not yours anymore, so get the fuck over it!”

Donovan charges again and his shoulder impacts Logan’s chest. He tackles him hard against the wall, sending Logan’s back smashing through the Sheetrock.

“You were one of my best friends!” Donovan snarls. “You knew she was off limits. I had to find out about this on the goddamned news.”

Logan manages to swing a fist at Donovan who narrowly ducks out of the way. More Sheetrock explodes, this time at Logan’s hand.

“I’m still your friend, asshole,” Logan spits and cracks his knuckles. “But you need to get the fuck off my property and calm your ass down before I have my boys bring you in.”

Donovan runs his fingers through his always gelled-to-perfection hair, messing it up completely. I’ve never seen him so furious. Not like this. Sure, he’s had moments where his powerful exterior falls away and reveals a vulnerable man. But it doesn’t happen often. Unfortunately, it only happens when it concerns me.

I’m Donovan’s weakness.

The very sword he’d impale himself on if it came to it.

“I want to talk to Nadia alone,” Donovan hisses, his eyes flitting over to me. Assessing me. Washing over me. Checking to make sure I’m okay. It’s the way Donovan is. He protects and takes care of what belongs to him. Always and without fail.

“Not going to fucking happen,” Logan snaps. “Not when you’re so pissed off.”

Donovan screams again and launches himself at Logan. They crash down the hallway past the basement door through the entryway to my bedroom. The door is nearly ripped from its hinges and they both fall into the room with a grunt. I hurry after them to make sure they aren’t killing each other.

Logan manages to straddle Donovan and back hand him. But Donovan’s a big boy and he shoves Logan away. He yanks a gun from the back of his pants and points it at Logan, his chest heaving with intent—intent to kill—and I cry out as I rush him. If he kills Logan, he kills me. My heart will cease to beat.

“No!” I shriek and tackle him onto my bed, knocking the gun from his hand onto the floor. We’re a tangled mess of limbs and his arms instinctively wrap around my back.

“Oh, God,” he grunts, his breath coming out in labored breaths. “How did this happen? How did you fall for
him
?”

I hear a familiar click of metal and I stiffen in Donovan’s arms.

“Let her go and get the
fuck
out of my house.” Logan’s voice is low and scathing.

Donovan grips me harder but I struggle and squirm until I’m out of his arms. My eyes dart all around as I take in the scene before me. Donovan, the big, strong powerful man on his back, stares up at me from the bed, betrayal marring his features. And Logan stands over him pointing his dropped gun at his face.

“This isn’t over,” Donovan snaps and scrambles to his feet. He storms over to me and quickly hugs me once more before he stalks out of the house. The front door slams as he leaves and my weak heart goes with him.

Logan strides over to me and uses the barrel of Donovan’s gun to lift my chin. My eyes lock with the monstrous ones I’d been so good at containing. His beast is running wild and free. And it’s starving. Starving for me.

“You’re in so much fucking trouble, bad girl.”

Y
esterday, I lost control. I’d had the bitch in my grasp and I fucking lost it. I nearly kissed her for fuck’s sake. And when I’d seen her bruises and the way Logan tore through her flesh with his teeth, I was infuriated.

I’d like to lie to myself and claim it was because he was ruining her before I could get my hands on her. But that wasn’t it. All night, I lay in bed and contemplated my newfound anger that for once wasn’t directed at her. I thought about Mom and Dale. The eerily similar relationship between Logan and Nadia. My mind had been a mess thinking about ways to fucking save her like I could never do for my own mother.

Fucking ridiculous in hindsight.

This morning though, I woke up with my head back in the game. My new plan was formulating and beginning to take shape. A plan to impregnate Nadia and spend the rest of my life terrorizing her for child visitation and all the other bullshit that goes along with shared custody. So goddamned tempting. I wouldn’t simply mess up her world for now, I could mess it up until the day she dies. Every time she looked at her child, she’d be reminded of me. Just like every time I look at her, I’m reminded of my sister who she couldn’t help.

I’ll be her worst fucking nightmare.

At least she wouldn’t get beat on…

The thought sobers me up, once again my own personal experiences clouding my judgment, and I shake it away. I need to slowly work my way into her heart. Make her love me even. She’ll fall for me, head over fucking heels. I will be her security. Her love. Her safety. Once she’s finally settled in my arms, my child growing in her stomach, maybe even a ring on her finger, I’ll dump her.

Dramatically.

Suddenly.

And watch her whole world crumble around her.

I will remind her she’s just a stupid bitch and if she’d ever learn to pay attention, she would have noticed it was all a fucking act. An act that resulted in her destruction, all in the name of revenge.

“Isn’t that right, Ghost?” Logan’s voice booms, jerking me from my daydreaming about his fiancée.
