Although the French Symbolist movement had a direct influence on relatively few British poets of the nineties, possibly because of its close relationship with Decadence and because of its tendency to obscurity, Symbolist theory and practicelike that of Aestheticism and Decadencenevertheless became part of the mainstream of twentieth-century modernism.
