( c. 839–923 (AH 224–310)). Prominent Muslim scholar, best known for his history of the world, Ta’r kh al-Rusul wa’l-Mul k (Chronicle of Apostles and Kings). He also composed a vast commentary ( tafs r ) on the Qur’ n , in which he gathered together earlier exegesis on an equally large scale. It became a standard work of reference for later exegetes, and is used to the present day. He also founded a school of shar ‘a , known as Jariyya, but it was so close to the Sh fi‘ites that it did not persist.
