Han Yü
(786–824).
Taoist writer, of exemplary prose style, who was a fierce defender of Confucianism, not simply against Buddhism, but also against the widespread and tolerant eclecticism which accepted Buddhism and Taoism as complementary to Confucianism. Although not effective in public life because of his uncompromising attitude, he was ‘rediscovered’ in the 10th-cent. Confucian revival, and became a hero of that movement. Han Yü ended his days in exile in S. China.
