I grasped my head and let out a guttural scream that echoed throughout the valley. Tage’s feet slowed beside me, and I knew Roman was close behind.
He would calm me.
I didn’t want to calm down.
I wanted blood.
I wanted to end them all.
“Where would they go?” I asked Roman.
“To the city. There’s a way in on the other side.”
I needed weapons.
I needed a plan.
Julian jogged up with a concerned look on his face. “You’re a force to be reckoned with, poppet.”
Damn straight
, I thought, just before I started vomiting. Dara’s blood burned a path up my throat and out my nose. Tage grabbed my back, steadying me. “It’s okay,” he said soothingly.
But it wasn’t okay and it would
never
be okay. I wouldn’t be okay. I wasn’t okay. This wasn’t okay. None of this was okay.
Damn it!
“I should have just let Dara turn him,” I sobbed between heaves. Tage rubbed my back and tried to comfort me as best as he could.
“No, Porsch. You couldn’t let her hurt him. You only tried to protect the one you love. It’s what anyone would have done.”
Hands on my shaking knees, I looked up at Julian. “Why were you helping her? And why are you trying to double-cross Roman by playing the Elders against him?”
The muscle in Julian’s jaw worked back and forth in anger. “Is that right?” Roman asked, walking toward Julian with deadly intent. Dara wasn’t the only one who died that night, and it looked like Roman would get to flex his precious compulsion muscle. I was certain that nothing could fill the gaping hole in my chest now; nothing but revenge.
Vengeance. Such a sweet word. It tempted those who sought it, like a siren into dangerous waters.
