With right sides facing, using MC, working through back loops only, whip st squares together following assembly diagram. This leaves the front loops free on the right side to accent each square. Then sew the first squares to the last squares to form a ring.

CROCHET HAT COVER—CENTER

GAUGE
Rounds 1 7 = 2" (5 cm) in diameter

Work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd each of *MC, A, MC, B, MC, C, MC, D, rep from * throughout.

With MC, ch 2.

RND 1 (RIGHT SIDE):
6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with a SI st in first sc (6 sc). Do not fasten off MC. Carry MC up on wrong side of work.

RND 2:
With right side facing, join A in first sc, ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with a SI st in first sc (12 sc). Fasten off.

RND 3:
With MC, ch 1,*sc in sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with a SI st in first sc (18 sc).

RND 4:
With right side facing, join B in first sc, ch 1, *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with a SI st in first sc (24 sc). Fasten off.

RND 5:
With MC, ch 1, sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, rep from * around, ending with sc in last 2 stc, join with a SI st in first sc (30 sc).

RND 6:
With right side facing, join C in first sc, ch 1, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, rep from * around, join with a SI st in first sc (36 sc). Fasten off.

RND 7:
With MC, ch 1, *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with a SI st in first sc (42 sc).

RND 8:
With right side facing, join D in first sc, ch 1, sc in next 3 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, rep from * around, ending with sc in each of last 3 sc, join with a SI st in first sc (48 sc). Fasten off.

RNDS 9–23:
Maintaining color sequence, work in sc, inc 6 sc in each rnd as established, stagger the position of the increases so as not to work inc over inc in the previous rnd (138 sc at end of last rnd).

RND 24:
With right side facing, join D in first sc, ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with a SI st in first sc. Fasten off.

RND 25:
With MC, ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with a SI st in first sc. Fasten off.

With right sides of the hat center and the granny square band facing, join the two pieces together by working a round of SI sts through inside loops of each side together, join with a SI st in first SI st. Fasten off.

BOTTOM TRIM

With right side facing, join MC with a SI st to the bottom back of the granny square band.

RNDS 1–3
: Ch 1, sc in each st and sp around, join with a SI st in first sc (126 sc).

RND 4:
Working from left to right, ch 1, reverse sc in each st around, join with a SI st in first reverse sc. Fasten off.
