“But that’s not the way it is with the DRMC clubs,” Rose said.

“They’ve made it so that the whole appeal is that the girls don’t want to be there. Their customers know it. The girls have been captured. They don’t want to do it. They’re being forced.”

“That’s how it was for me.”

“It just isn’t right,” Josh said. “And then, the thing they did with you and Patrice. It’s exactly the same. They saw something good happening there. They saw a man falling for a girl. It should have been the most natural thing in the world. In an ordinary club they would have let him make you his girl and you two could have been happy together.”

“That’s not what they had in mind at all,” Rose said.

“No. They made him rape you. They destroyed any chance of happiness for either of you.”

Rose thought about it. Josh didn’t know just how horrible they’d made it. They hadn’t just forced Patrice to rape her. They’d forced him to do it while she was lying in piss.

“I just don’t know what to make of it,” Josh said. “I had that kid, Patrice. I had my gun pointed right at him. I could have killed him.”

“You can’t kill everyone that ever hurt me,” Rose said.

“No,” Josh said, “but sometimes I feel as if I’d like to.”

Rose nodded.

“There’s no excuse for raping a woman,” Josh said. “I don’t care if they put a gun to his head. You can’t do a thing like that and expect people to forgive you. I should have killed him when I had the chance. I can’t believe I let him go.”

Rose didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know if Josh was right or not. She didn’t know anything any more. All of this was so far beyond her. She wasn’t equipped for it. So many men were dead. Six had been killed. Deuce, Serge, Fat Boy, they were all dead. Murdoch and Patrice were still out there. Would it make any difference to her if they were dead too?

“I should have killed him, shouldn’t I?” Josh said. “That kid, Patrice. They told him to do it but he still had a choice. He should have done the right thing. He should have stood up to them. If he liked you, he should have made a stand.”

Rose didn’t know the answer. She said nothing. Too much blood had already been spilled.

“Y
OU’RE BLEEDING,” ROSE SAID.

In the rush to escape Val-d’Or she’d forgotten that he’d taken buckshot. She could see the blood coming through his shirt and jeans.

“It’s nothing.”

“It’s not nothing,” she said. “I have to clean it. Lie back.”

Josh did as he was told and lay back on the bed.

“Get those jeans off and roll over,” she said.

She went into the bathroom and wet a towel with hot water. She wished she had some alcohol to disinfect the wounds but this would have to do. When she got back out to the room Josh was lying on the bed completely naked. He was on his tummy and she had the most perfect view of his butt. If it wasn’t for the shrapnel in his legs and shoulder she’d have wanted him right then and there.

“Oh my!” she said with a smile on her face.

“Sorry,” he said, “but you’ve seen me naked before, right.”

“Don’t apologize,” she said as she got on the bed next to him. “This might sting a little.”

She dabbed his wounds with the wet towel and wiped away the blood. Some of the cuts were easy to wash but she could see that others would be more difficult. There was bits of shot in them or threads of fabric from his clothes.

“This is going to hurt,” she said as she wiped at one of the deeper wounds. “I’ve got to get the shot out.”

“It’s fine,” Josh said.

He didn’t flinch at all while she wiped the wounds. She really had to work some of them but by the end of it she was pretty sure she’d gotten all of the shrapnel out.

“You should be good,” she said. “I’d like to disinfect the wounds but I don’t have anything to use.”

“I think they’ll be okay,” he said.

She looked down at his body and couldn’t help admire it. He had such smooth skin and she could see his muscles rippling beneath the surface. She felt a strong throb of desire.

She also felt bad for him.

“We better eat something,” Josh said.

He got up from the bed and Rose got a glimpse of his manhood. She couldn’t believe how attracted to him she felt. There he was, naked, so close to her she could reach out and touch him. She knew she’d freaked out the last time they’d tried to have sex, she knew she had big issues to deal with, but she didn’t think she would be able to resist Josh for much longer. She didn’t care if she was ready for a relationship or not. She wanted that body.

And there was something about the way he acted. It was almost like he wasn’t a normal man. He never thought of himself. He hardly seemed to eat or sleep. She felt as if he was some sort of protector that had been sent to her from heaven. Everything he did was for her. She felt as if she’d had a guardian angel looking over her for the past ten years and had never even known it. Ten years, that’s how long Josh had been looking out for her, carrying her mother’s photo, keeping the memory of her father’s club alive.

He’d carried that photo of her mother all that time. That meant he’d been thinking of her. It wasn’t normal. There was something special about Josh and the way he thought of her.

The only thing she regretted was how violent everything had become. Josh had so much blood on his hands now that she worried about the effect it was going to have on him. He couldn’t just keep killing men because they’d harmed her. It had to stop somewhere.

OSE CUT STRIPS OF BANDAGING
from the bed sheet and covered Josh’s wounds with them. He put his clothes on over them. She thought it looked strange that he had bullet holes in all his clothes but she doubted anyone in the town would take much notice. It was a pretty wild place. They had to eat so they left the room, locking it behind them.

“What do you feel like eating?” Josh said as they walked across the parking lot to the street.

“Let’s see what they’ve got,” she said.

They walked along the main drag through town. There wasn’t much to see, a post office, a provincial forestry office, a small administrative building that served as the town hall.

“I don’t know if there’s going to be anything to eat around here,” Rose said.

“There’s got to be something,” Josh said.

They kept going along the street. The evening wasn’t as cold as it had been lately and the air felt good. The streetlights flickered with a bluish kind of light.

Josh reached out and took Rose’s hand as they walked. It filled her with happiness when he did.

They came to a convenience store and by some miracle it was open. Josh held the door for Rose as she went in. It was a dusty little store with an old man behind the counter. He had thin white hair that looked like cotton.

“I was just about to close up,” he said as they came in.

“Lucky we caught you,” Rose said.

“What can I get you?”

“Do you have any bandages? And alcohol.”

The old man looked at her and then at Josh.

“Got yourself into a little trouble, did you?”

Josh nodded. “Something like that.”

The old man got up from his seat and went into a back room. He came back with some rubbing alcohol, gauze and bandages and laid them out on the counter. He put a scissors next to the bundle.

“Perfect,” Rose said. “We’re also looking for something to eat.”

The old man looked at his watch. “Kind of late for anything like that around here. If you wanted a drink I’d know where to send you.”

“That’s okay,” Rose said. “We’ll just take some of the snacks here.”

She grabbed some chips, jerky and a couple of cans of soda.

“You want anything else?” she said to Josh.

Josh grabbed a few candy bars and put them on the counter too. The old man rang everything up and wished them a good night.

HEY WENT BACK TO THEIR
motel room and had a little picnic of sorts on the bed. Then Rose got Josh to strip again so that she could properly bandage his wounds. It felt good to have her looking after him. He’d never known affection like that before. His mother had died when he was still a child and he hardly remembered anything about her. He knew little of the joy of a woman’s tenderness. Lying naked on the bed while she cleaned and dressed his wounds reminded him of the fact.

He felt such affection and sympathy for Rose. She’d been through so much in her life. She’d lost her family. She’d grown up alone. And then the DRMC had taken her and put her through a hell that few people could even imagine. And despite all of that hardship she was still so beautiful, so tender and compassionate.

“How does that feel?” she said as she dabbed at one of the deeper wounds with the alcohol.

It stung a lot but he didn’t mind. It felt good to have her taking care of him.

“Good,” he said.

He tried not to think about the six men he’d killed earlier but he couldn’t help it. He hoped he’d done enough for Rose. He hoped that she would be able to move forward with her life and get over the past. As she finished cleaning his wounds he turned and looked at her.

She was so beautiful. Life would never be easy for her, not after all the things she’d been through, but he prayed she’d be able to overcome it all.

“You look really beautiful,” he said.

She blushed. She was shy. He wasn’t surprised, he was completely naked after all.

He felt a throb of desire in his groin but knew that Rose wouldn’t see it. He was lying on his front with his dick beneath him and she couldn’t see that he was stiffening up as he looked at her.

“Thank you,” she said. “You better go get dressed. We’re going to need our sleep.”

He took that as a sign that she wanted to get to sleep. He really wanted her but if she was tired he didn’t mind waiting. He was patient by nature, but God, she looked alluring as she sat there, gently cleaning his wounds.

“You’re right,” he said. “It’s getting late and we’ve got to get back on the road at first light.”

OSE WENT INTO THE BATHROOM
to take a shower. Josh got up from the bed and looked down at his stiff penis. He really wanted her bad. But he would wait. He didn’t want to rush her, he didn’t want to force her. She needed time. All she needed was a little time. They’d get through all this together.

He went over to the window and looked outside. It was still all clear. The street was completely deserted. He was pretty sure the DRMC wouldn’t find them there, at least not that night. They’d have had to send riders both north and south where the 117 forked. They’d avoided all of the towns along the way so it would have been impossible for the men who followed north to get confirmation that they were on the right track. They’d have to assume they’d gone south. That would have led them through the Vérendrye and then down to the more populated country closer to Montreal. It was by far the more likely way to have run.

Josh thought about the men in the DRMC. He didn’t understand how an MC like that could get so many followers. There were so many men who seemed eager to sign up for something like that even though its sole purpose was to do bad.

He hated the club but he hoped he didn’t have to kill any more of its members. It was taking its toll on him. He wasn’t cut out for murder and killing and he knew that the faces of the men he’d killed would haunt him for the rest of his life.

When Rose came out of the bathroom she looked like an angel. She’d showered and washed her hair and it looked perfect. Her skin was smooth and fresh. She didn’t have anything to wear so she was just standing there naked, looking embarrassed. She was hiding her body behind the door but he could imagine every inch of it. He wanted her, he wanted to ravish her, but he knew he had to give her more time. He didn’t want to distress her and go through what had happened at Jac’s place again.

“Don’t look,” she said.

He’d seen her naked before but he didn’t protest.

“You run for the bed,” he said. “I won’t peek. I promise.”

He kept his word and looked out the window as Rose made her way quickly to the bed. He was naked himself and he turned out the light before joining her in the bed.

As soon as he got under the covers and felt the warmth of her naked body next to his, he knew that it was going to be very difficult for him not to have sex with her. He doubted he’d be able to sleep at all with her lying there, so close, so beautiful, so enticing.

His penis began to stiffen and he put his hand on it to cover it. He knew she’d notice at some point that he was completely erect but what could he do about it? It was nature.

“Hold me,” Rose said. “Make me feel safe.”

She had her back to him out of shyness and he pressed up against her and put his arms around her. She felt so small and vulnerable in his arms, like a child. There was nothing in all the world that he loved as much as he loved her and he wanted to make her feel as secure and safe as it was possible for a girl to feel.

“I’ll hold you,” he said, “and I’ll never let you go, Rose Meadows.”

“Thank you,” she whispered.

As he breathed in the fragrant scent of her hair it didn’t take more than a minute for him to fall into a deep sleep.

R
OSE COULDN’T BELIEVE THAT JOSH’S
naked body was so close to hers. He was pressed up against her back, his strong arms wrapped around her, and she swore she could feel the firm bulge of his penis against her butt. She imagined what it would be like if he slipped that inside her. It would be ecstasy. It would be delicious heaven. But she knew that it wasn’t the time for lovemaking. He’d said he wanted to get on the road again at dawn and with good reason. She had no idea how many men were on their tail or how far behind they were. They really had no choice but to keep moving at first light.

She’d admired Josh’s body from close range while she’d been cleaning his wounds. He really was a perfect example of manhood. Every muscle, every sinew and tendon seemed perfectly formed. He was like a statue that someone had made to teach people about the human figure. As she’d wiped the shrapnel out of his cuts she’d looked closely at the various muscles in his back, all perfectly defined. She’d also looked at his ass for longer than she cared to admit. It was a perfect ass with tight muscles and two dimples in the sides as if it had been pinched.
