Folic acidone of the B vitamins, folic acid helps heal mucus membranes and has been found helpful in healing cold sores.
Coughs
Aromatherapy
Dry Cough Blendmix 2 drops eucaplytus, 2 drops lemon, and 2 tablespoons sweetener (for children older than one year old, use honey; if younger, use maple syrup). Dilute 1 teaspoon of this blend in a 4- to 6-ounce glass of warm water, and sip slowly.
Coughs with Mucus Blendmix 2 drops eucalyptus, 1 drop thyme, and 1 drop tea tree oil with 1 tablespoon sweetener (for children older than 1 year, use honey; if younger, use maple syrup). Add 1 drop of this mixture to a 4- to 6-ounce glass of warm water and sip slowly.
Cough Massage Oilfor either type of cough, combine 3 drops eucalyptus, 2 drops thyme, and 1 tablespoon organic, cold-pressed vegetable oil. Massage into chest and back.
Homeopathy
Aconitumuse during the first 24 hours for a dry cough, especially one that starts after exposure to cold or after a fright.
Spongiafor a dry, barking, or rattling cough aggravated by talking, getting excited, and cold drinks; better after sipping a hot drink.
Bryoniafor a dry, painful cough; even breathing hurts, so the child may put his hands on his chest to lessen movement.
Belladonnafor a cough with high fever and sweating.
Antimonium tartaricum
for a pale, tired child who feels breathless and has a rattling cough due to thick mucus. Do not give if your child has a fever.
Pulsatillafor the emotional, clingy child with a cough that produces thick yellow or yellow-green expectoration; cough is worse after eating or lying down and is aggravated by being in a warm, stuffy room.
Rumexfor a dry, tickling cough, worse when lying down (especially on the left side) or when breathing cold air.

Coccus cacti
when there is an accumulation of thick, stringy mucus and cold drinks provide short-term relief.
Ipecacuannaif vomiting, nausea, or nosebleed accompany the cough.
Phosphoruswhen chills, laryngitis or hoarseness, or thirst for cold water accompany the cough; aggravated by cold air, talking, lying on the back or left side, strong odors.
Hepar sulphuris
for the later stages of a dry cough with rattling in the chest but difficulty bringing up mucus.
Cough and bronchial syrup (Boericke & Tafel sugar-free)an excellent homeopathic combination remedy for coughs and congestion.
Herbal Medicine
Licorice rootantibacterial, soothing to throat and respiratory tract as tea or in tincture.
Marshmallow rootgiven as tea, soothes the throat and respiratory tract.
Mullein teahelpful in the early stages of a cough, before an expectorant is needed.
Osha roothighly aromatic, helps clear the lungs when cough is productive, good for a dry cough, too.
Slippery elmin tea or lozenge form, soothes the throat.
