Kayla pointed to the pamphlets on her bed. “Maybe it won’t always be easy, but I understand better, and it helps.”
“Yes, I’m sure it does. Now, about this group, you say they go once in a while? Into the city?”
“Yes,” Kayla said. “I was going to ask you if I could go with them? They’re going next Thursday because Althea doesn’t have any volleyball after school. I’d like to meet others, maybe talk to them if they’re willing.”
“I’ll talk to Mr. Ritter. We’ll both go anyway, but maybe we can all carpool together.”
“Mom! Thursday nights are cheerleading booster nights, aren’t they?”
“Oh, forget that.” Her mom waved a hand dismissively. “You aren’t involved in cheerleading anymore. If this is who you are, and this is your life, I’m way more interested in it.”
So happy her heart might burst, Kayla leaned into her mom’s arms again, squeezing tight. “Thanks, Mom.”
“It’ll be all right.” Her hand lightly patted Kayla’s long hair. “We’ll get through this and you’ll be all right.”
For once, finally, Kayla agreed.
KATE SANDS
grew up in a small rural town on the Canadian Prairies. She developed a love of reading and writing at a young age, becoming completely enamored with the craft of storytelling. It wasn’t until she grew up and left small-town life behind, moving to the Big City, before she truly understood what diversity was and what it could be. She still reads a variety of fiction, but concentrates on writing in the LGBTQA+ genre in an effort to add to that diversity. She hopes that these kinds of stories will reach someone, somewhere, in a way she missed out on in her earlier years.
