style zones
[Ge].
An area within which artefacts or designs of a particular
STYLE
are commonly found. Often used to describe the areas within which distinctive kinds of pottery were circulating.
stylistic type
[De].
Type based on stylistic distinctions.
stylobate
[Ge].
A continuous foundation supporting a row or rows of columns.
stylus
[Ar].
A writing implement consisting of a small rod with a pointed end for scratching letters on wax-covered tablets and a blunt end for obliterating them.
sub-assemblage
[De].
Association of artefacts denoting a particular form of prehistoric activity practised by a group of people.
Sub-Atlantic Phase
[Ge].
A biostratigraphic subdivision of the
FLANDRIAN STAGE
in which conditions were colder and wetter than in the preceding
SUB-BOREAL
. Godwin's
POLLEN ZONE
VIII corresponds to the start of the Sub-Atlantic in Britain and is marked in southern England at least by the appearance of beech and hornbeam. The Sub-Atlantic generally spans the period
c.
500 bc down to the present day in northern Europe.
Sub-Boreal Phase
[Ge].
A biostratigraphic subdivision of the
FLANDRIAN STAGE
in which conditions were warm and dry compared with the preceding
ATLANTIC
period. Godwin's
POLLEN ZONE
VII corresponds with the Sub-Boreal in Britain, marked by the
ELM DECLINE
and the main human impact on the post-glacial forests in the later 5th and 4th millennia
bc
. The Sub-Boreal generally spans the period from
c.
3000 bc down to
c.
500 bc in northern Europe.
