Lily didn't recognize the woman; her hair was
jet black and cut into a short, blunt bob. The clothes the woman
wore were surprising, to say the least. An extremely low-cut tank
top and a skirt so short, it was surely illegal somewhere. She
tried to recall anyone with that description, but couldn't think of
anyone.

There was a lot of moaning and groping going
on. Lily felt embarrassed as she watched.

I'm a freakin' peeping Tom ghost. She thought
dismally.

Finally, they paused as the man exited the
vehicle to urinate. He was obviously intoxicated as he staggered
into the bushes. Lily watched as the woman began digging in her
purse and produced some lipstick. As the woman flipped down the
visor and opened the mirror, a small light turned on, illuminating
her face.

Lily gasped. “Quinn?”

Beyond the jet black hair, thick make-up and
skimpy clothes, was her little sister. Lily stared at her face with
disbelief. Her beautiful baby sister, reduced to dressing and
acting like a tramp.

After a few moments, the man stumbled back
and they resumed their make-out session.

Stunned, Lily was too confused to pay any
further attention to the frisky couple. She wandered back into the
house. Perplexed, Lily sat on the stairs, her mind fixated on her
bedroom.

If Quinn is out there—who the hell is in bed
with my husband?

Demons

The heartbeat is what David noticed first. As
they entered the atmosphere of the mother planet, David felt the
pulse. He could hear it, feel it and was one with the Earth's
energy.

Drifting on a breeze like a feather, David
wished he could fly like this all of the time. Michael had
explained earlier that David could descend slowly through the
atmosphere because of his lightweight body.

They soared below the clouds to reveal the
surface. It looked like an alien planet to David. Even though he'd
spent his living years here, it was now foreign terrain. The
surface looked nothing like it did when he was alive.

Energy, everything was energy. Positive,
negative, neutral. All energy.

Drifting over a city, David recognized a few
of the buildings from pictures he had seen when he was alive. New
York. Though it was New York, it did not look like the city he
remembered.

Energy waves flowed in all directions. It
felt like David was floating in a vast ocean of color.

Settling on the ground, Michael quietly
ushered David to a hiding spot where they could observe the living.
He was very confused as to why they'd have to hide from the living
when the living couldn't see them.

David and Michael crouched behind a large
berm at the edge of the city. Carefully peeking over, they saw many
hundreds of the living going about their lives, hustling and
bustling around.

David remembered how everyone looked while he
was alive. People's looks and behavior varied. They're hairstyles,
clothing, and mannerisms. All the rules had changed now that he
watched with the eyes of his soul.

Though every individual still carried with
them the aspects of the living, David could now see their souls,
their auras, their pains, their sorrows and, surprisingly, their
spirit guides. Every person that walked the busy streets of New
York had a personal angelic guide following their every move.
Dedicated spirits diligently walked every step with their chosen
living person.

He laughed when he saw two spirit guides
trying desperately to get two people to meet and fall in love with
one another. The two living people were completely oblivious to
their guides' attempts to lead them to true love.

A blind date set up by the other side. David
thought with a chuckle.

David watched as every person's aura
interacted with another. Their energy signatures mingling with even
the most subtle of exchanges. Even a glance at one another while
walking past, would send an energy exchange between bodies.

Two people talking were fascinating. If the
discussion was friendly, many soft colors wafted between the
people. If there was a heated debate, streams of bright red would
fire back and forth. Two people kissing on a park bench elicited
white light that embraced the two.

A man singing in the park for money sent
waves of blues and pinks cascading over the entire park. A mother
rocking her sleeping baby shone crystalline white.

The trees, the rocks, the birds...everything
had a light surrounding it. Each and every thing that existed had a
vibe, an energy. And everything, simply everything, affected one
other. Auras merged together like clouds blowing together in a
breeze.

If only people knew what affect they had on
one another, on the environment that they're in! David thought.
“Amazing!”

“Yes. Humans are truly amazing beings.”
Michael agreed with a quiet smile. “Now, I want you to lower your
vibration a little. Right now, you are seeing the higher end of the
spectrum. Bring your vibration down a little. I need to show you
something.”

David closed his eyes and concentrated on his
energy. Just as he'd raised his frequency to create healing power,
he now slowed his vibration down.

Opening his eyes, he gasped. There were
hundreds of people walking along the streets, just as before, but
their auras had completely changed. Where David previously saw the
living aura, he now witnessed what dwelt within the auras
themselves.

The creatures reminded David of snakes,
shadowy serpents woven into the auras of the living. The creatures
were wrapped tightly around the necks of their prey, whispering
into their ears. Some poor souls had several of these beasts
attached them, like leeches.

David felt tears come to his eyes as he saw
the devastating effects these evil beings had on their hosts.
Cancers, depression and illness plagued everyone who carried the
burden. Dark holes were eaten away in the auras, leaving the human
body to suffer various ailments.

The whispers were atrocious. The horrible
things these creatures said to the humans, disgusting words of
hatred. Lies, judgments and perversions were fed into the minds of
the living, leaving them drowning in a world of shame, depression
and fear.

Echoes of darkness could be heard from every
direction. David tried to shut them out, but was bombarded by the
whispers.

“You're so fat and ugly! No man would want
you!” One shadow snake hissed in a young woman's ear. “Stupid oaf!
No wonder your father abandoned you!” Another chastised. Some of
the things the leeches were saying were so morbid that David had to
cover his ears.

Some even appeared to be completely owned by
the beasts. It was as though the humans were simply possessions in
which the dark creatures controlled.

In the park, a short distance away, he
noticed a lone shadow snake stalking a new victim...a tiny baby
sleeping in a carriage. The baby’s mother read her novel, unaware
of the supernatural danger her child was in.

Before Michael could stop him, David stood
up, climbed over the berm and ran to the scene. His plan was to
scare the snake away before it could attach to the baby. Attempting
to summon his power of protective energy forth, he was suddenly
aware of being watched.

“David!!” Michael yelled, extremely alarmed.
“David! No! Stop!!”

Though the living kept about their business,
walking to and fro, the paranormal world had suddenly come alive.
The masses of shadow snakes, wound like scarves around their
victim’s necks, sharply turned their attention to David.

Hundreds of them had seen him scramble over
the berm. Stopping in his tracks, he realized the danger he was
in.

For a moment, everything was still. David
remained motionless. Even the snake which was about to climb into
the baby carriage, stopped and stared. Michael, now standing on the
berm, watched and waited. It looked as though the shadows might
ignore David and go back to their business.

If I were alive, I'd be sweating right now.
David thought as he felt the glare of evil.

Just when David thought the shadows were
going to leave him alone, he heard a thunderous roar. Hundreds of
snakes had opened their mouths simultaneously and bellowed like an
angry mob preparing to attack the enemy.

Abandoning their hosts, a swarm of shadow
snakes slithered to the ground and focused their attack on
David.

“Run David!! Run to me!!” Michael yelled as
he cupped his hands together, summoning a tunnel.

David didn't need to be told twice. He ran as
hard as his ethereal body would allow. Being in the lower
dimensions, however, his body was slow and cumbersome. Fatiguing
quickly, he wasn't sure he was going to make it to Michael in time.
Struggling over the berm, David looked back to witness the snakes
merging with one another, forming larger and stronger shadows. The
bigger ones weren't just snakes any longer; they were bigger, more
terrifying creatures.

Several of the snakes had blended together to
become huge, black shadow men, stalking David as he stood beside
Michael.

It was the largest of the shadow creatures
that caught David's attention however.

Thirty or more serpents had merged to form an
enormous shadow demon. Three times the size of Michael, its
tremendous wingspan scraped the walls of the high-rises on either
side of the main street. Razor sharp talons protruded from each
fingertip. Obsidian horns curved from either side of its head.
Roaring from the depths of its evil belly, it lunged toward David
and Michael.

David didn't know whether to feel awe or
horror. Its sheer size alone was terrifying, not to mention the
negative energy of the beast. The dark aura that surrounded this
abomination writhed and churned as it devoured all energy in its
path.

“Let's go!!” Michael yelled to David, who
hadn't noticed the vortex had suddenly opened up, inviting them to
safety.

The tunnel of light swept them up to
safety—or so they thought.

Hope

Maybe I should just go back to the tree
house, She thought sadly, I don't belong here anymore.

The tree house had some great memories within
it. The day she met Gabe, making love for the first time and their
honeymoon night. She thought back to her wedding day, how perfect
it was, marrying her best friend and so much hope for the
future.

The very next day, tragedy.

How can one day be the best day of your life
and the next day, the worst? She thought with anger building in her
chest. Why her? Why did this happen to her? What did she do to
deserve this?

As the questions drifted through her
thoughts, she suddenly remembered the nightmare, standing before
the Judges while black snakes slithered at her feet, whispering.
Slut...whore...you tempted the priest!

Oh my god! Lily thought incredulously, I
sinned and I'm being punished!

It all made sense now. She's obviously not in
Heaven, so she must be in Hell, or purgatory.

I guess I deserve this, Lily thought
remorsefully, I took Gabe from God and He's pissed!

Lily came to the realization that her life
was over. Her head hung in shame; she knew what she had to do. She
was going upstairs, not to look at the woman sleeping beside Gabe,
but say good-bye to her husband. She would live the rest of
eternity, alone, in the tree house. It was obvious that God had a
debt to settle with her and she may as well face the music.

Gabe doesn't deserve to have his dead wife
hanging around. Lily concluded sadly. She'd already destroyed his
career; she wasn't going to ruin his chances for happiness.

It took Lily a long time to work up the
courage to go upstairs. Crying softly, Lily walked through her
parents' home for the last time. She slid her sheer hand along the
wall as she ascended the stairwell. Never again would she see the
tired, old wallpaper her mother had chosen. Never again would she
set foot on the shag carpet, matted from years of happy children
running around. Never again would she see her mother smile or her
father's proud expression.

Moving down the hall to her former room, her
energy dipped further into a dark depression. She felt her aura
depleting as she contemplated saying her last good-bye to Gabe.

Can I do this? Lily agonized, standing at the
doorway.

Passing through the bedroom door, she was
again greeted by the soft hush of the nightlight.

Glancing at Gabe, sleeping on his back, she
noted how gaunt he looked. He had dark circles under his eyes and
his face had aged from sorrow.

She looked at the other side of the bed, the
owner of the long curly hair tucked well under the covers. All Lily
could see was the top of her head.

Focusing only on Gabe, she walked softly to
his side of the bed. Her heart and soul heavy with grief, she gazed
upon the face of her Gabe one last time.

“Oh Gabe” She said aloud, “Please forgive me.
That day in the church, when we first kissed...I would take it back
if I could...if it would make all of this go away.” She spoke the
words, but instantly knew they were untrue. “No...that's a lie.
Every moment I spent with you was heaven. So, I suppose, for as
little time as I spent in heaven, it was worth it...because I was
with you”

Closing her eyes, she prayed that for every
moment she is trapped in limbo, Gabe receives ten times the
happiness in his life. She was happy for him, happy he'd found love
again. She was glad he'd moved on.

Lily knew she deserved to be in this place.
The shadows were right, she'd committed a crime against God and it
was right she be punished.

Leaning over, she gently kissed Gabe on the
cheek. Staring at his handsome face, she tried to etch all his
features into her memory, knowing sadly, all might be forgotten the
moment she leaves his side and goes back to the tree house
forever.
