The nodding of her head was subtle though her eyes became large as saucers while tears began to glisten. Damn, he hated seeing that in her eyes. Her lips trembled as did her shoulders.

“You won’t like what I have to say,” she answered meekly, trying to look anywhere but his eyes. “Why don’t you just take me to the diner to wait for my car to be fixed and then I’ll leave.”

The masculine voice from the front seat startled her. “Do you have the money to pay for the repairs, darlin’?”

Tears began to rain from her blue eyes as she lowered her shaking head in humiliation. Jared pulled her into the crook of his shoulder, holding her, trying to comfort her. It was then he realized their woman could be in serious trouble and bringing it to their doorstep. They had just gotten through the mess with Owen and Angela and before that, the trouble that followed Lyndee to town, and now this. What happened to their quiet little town?

With his hand to her cheek, he held her close to him, his other arm holding her upper arm. Kissing the top of her head, he breathed her in, knowing he would do anything to protect her. “We’ll take care of everything, sweetheart. We’ll take care of you,” he whispered.

As if she were totally exhausted, after a few minutes, her sobs subsided and her body stopped shaking. Her steady breathing indicated she had fallen asleep. Glancing up, he caught Connor’s gray eyes in the rearview mirror. His boss nodded to him and he nodded back in a silent agreement to do anything and everything to protect and love their woman and her child.

The room was dim when Gina’s eyes fluttered open. Looking around the room, panic ensued as she realized where she probably was. When she didn’t spot her son in the room with her, she tried to get up out of the bed, but an arm kept her down.

In a half-sitting position she glanced behind her and found Connor lying on his side on top of the covers, his arm trying to bring her back down to him. Deciding not to struggle, she let him, and she found her backside firmly settled against his front, his hard cock resting in the valley of her buttocks. Involuntarily, she moaned at the feeling. She had always been taught that was wrong, but with the feel of it there, she wondered what it would feel like to have him fuck her ass with it.

His large, tanned hand moved up from her waist to her breast, covering it and kneading. Instinctively, her chest thrust out, filling his hand with the globe of her breast, separated only by her shirt and bra. A breath in her hair told her his face was close before she felt his tongue on her ear. It licked around the shell before moving lower and his teeth caught her lobe and he gently nibbled on it as his hand continued to knead at her.

A movement beneath her caused her to rise just a bit as his other arm slipped under her and he moved her on top of him, her front facing up. His hands slipped up under her shirt and undid the clasp at the front of her bra, freeing her tits from the lace-and-cotton confines. Both hands covered her breasts, kneading them firmly, drawing gasps and mewls from her. Her legs were straddling his thighs and she felt heat rising in her cheeks as his legs spread, causing hers to spread even further over his.

Her jeans were tight and they pulled up against her mound, pressing the seam deeper into her, the thong beneath them wadded up against her slit as it was. She didn’t know why she felt the tingling in her pussy since no one was touching it, but the sensation was building as Connor was pumping his hips against her ass, her clit inadvertently rubbing against the double layer of jean material.

The hands at her breasts were no stranger to manual labor. They were callused and strong. Connor worked the palms of his hands across her nipples, knowing the callused skin worked as a stimulant.

All of a sudden, the feeling in her pussy began to tighten, drawing the feeling from her nipples right to her core. As if an explosion happened in her core, the sensations shot out from there, causing her whole body to go rigid. She felt it in her fingertips and her toes as she screamed out, riding the feeling she had never experienced before. She worried she was dying, that there was something wrong with her, but she felt Connor’s hands grasp her breasts tightly as his crotch pumped against her.

As the sensations began to wane, her breathing was coming in gasps and her pussy twitched. She felt Connor’s mouth against her ear. “Good girl. Good girl.”

Gina wasn’t able to speak for a moment as she tried to regain her senses, nor was she able to move. Her body felt like jelly.

When her senses had returned, she lay looking up at the unlit light hanging from the ceiling. “Geez, what was that?” she asked breathlessly, half out loud.

She was surprised to hear a chuckle come from below her as Connor’s hands left her breasts and his legs moved back together. As if she weighed nothing, he lifted her and lay her down on her back next to him. Turning onto his side again, he rested his head on one hand, his other hand under her shirt, rubbing her stomach.

“What do you mean, what was that?” he asked wanting to joke with her. There was something in his eyes that told her exactly when he realized the truth. Her eyes closed in shame and she turned her head away. “Gina, darlin’, look at me.”

Shaking her head as tears leaked from her closed eyelids, she wanted to sink into the bed and disappear. Apparently she had done something wrong and she didn’t know what.

“Gina!” Connor commanded as she felt him rise to his knees. “Look at me!”

Slowly turning her head, she opened her eyes to see the concern in his face. She didn’t know if she should be frightened or flattered that he cared for her, but with her past, she would opt for frightened. Doubt was her friend. Skepticism ruled her life, that’s how she lived and survived and now these men wanted to be a part of her and that scared the hell out of her.

“Gina, what do you think just happened to you?” Connor asked kindly.

Between sobs, she tried to answer. “I don’t know. I have never experienced anything like that before. What did I do wrong?”

She flinched when she saw his hands come down, reaching for her shoulders. He must have seen her reaction because he stopped.

“Fuck!” he hissed as he climbed off the bed. Peeking under her wet eyelashes, which stuck together, she watched him pace the room a few times before he came back to her. Without waiting for her response, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her out the door of the room they had occupied. Down the hallway he went until they emerged into the living room.

Looking around, she saw it was clean. She wasn’t expecting that from a bachelor. The couches and recliners were leather and the tables were dark heavy oak. A fire was roaring in the brick fireplace where a thick slab of wood sat above the opening as a mantel. Above that a large buck’s head was mounted in all its glory with its ten point antlers a testament to Connor’s hunting prowess. Or, at least she thought they were at Connor’s by the conversation on the ride over.

The walls were painted a soft beige, complimentary to the furniture and knickknacks in the room. It was a cozy room, one she could get used to being in. She could picture herself sitting there in the evenings with the two men at the end of the day, relaxing.

Now she was a bundle of nerves as Connor set her down in one of the recliners. He pointed at her and she felt like a child as he said, “You stay there. Do not move. We are going to all have that chat now.”

Fear consumed her as she realized she couldn’t hear the baby and here Connor was giving her commands. Did they already know what she had done? Were they going to take the baby away from her? Was it finally time for her to go to jail?

Chapter Four

As if on cue Jared stepped out of the kitchen holding her son. No more blanket to hide the mistake she had made. The mistake that changed her whole life and could send her to prison for the rest of her life, causing her to lose her child forever.

The brown-haired man moved over to her and placed the child in her arms, and she looked up at Jared in confusion. His features were soft and loving, which threw her for a loop. His short spiky hair gave him that military look that she had fallen for.

No, she wasn’t going there. That was a big mistake, one she would like to forget but knew she couldn’t. Pulling the baby closer to her, she hugged him tightly to her, afraid to let go until they dragged her off to jail.

Connor sat on the end of the coffee table in front of her while Jared sat in the recliner to her left. Avoiding their gazes, she tried to look anywhere but at them and ended up staring at a picture on the wall of a happy family, Connor and his sister when they were little with their parents. It made her sob to think of a happy family. Something she would never achieve.

Connor’s hand found her knee and she jumped at the touch. “Gina.” His voice was low and soothing and it killed her to hear it. She would rather him yell at her. “We know you must have been through something very traumatic. We see it in your eyes, in your expression. It’s evident in your son. You need to tell us what happened and what you are afraid of so we can help you.”

Shaking her head, she fought back the tears. “I can’t. You’ll hate me and then take away my life.”

Jared reached over and laid his hand on her forearm soothingly. “We could never hate you, sugar. We want to help you with whatever problem you are having. Trust is a big deal in these kinds of relationships. You have to trust us to help you. Please let us help you.”

He sounded so honest with her with his statement that she wanted to believe him. When Connor rubbed his hand on her knee, the funny feeling in her stomach started. Could she trust them? Could she put her life in the palms of their hands and not have them crush it? She looked from one man to the other, searching their eyes for one speck of dishonesty or hatred. She didn’t see any of that. Taking a deep breath, she held her son tight as she began what she hoped would not be what led her to prison.

“My name is Virginia Picard. I am originally from Milwaukee. I got married the day after my seventeenth birthday. He was seven years older than me. He couldn’t keep a job so after a year he decided we were going to move back to his hometown of Fargo. He became abusive not too long after we got there. First it was verbal. He yelled at me about everything. Dinner wasn’t on the table on time or the house wasn’t clean enough. Eventually, he began to hit me.”

Connor frowned as her story continued and he knelt down in front of her, wrapping his arms around her legs and laying his head on her lap, his tenderness surprising her. Jared patted her arm “Go on, sweetie.”

“I began to hate him, I’ll admit, but I had been brought up that divorce was wrong so I stayed. It got to the point that I couldn’t please him in anything I did. I didn’t have any friends because I was afraid they would find out and then there would be trouble. I had gotten pregnant and when I was three months along we had an argument. He pushed me down and the next day I started bleeding. I miscarried the next day. I went into a deep depression. I didn’t want to do anything. I refused to go anywhere, not even to church. He got mad because it made him look bad that I wasn’t going out and socializing.

“After about three months I lost the baby, he started demanding sex. I told him I didn’t feel like it but one night he got really mad. He grabbed me by the hair in the living room and threw me to the floor. Before I could get up, he was on top of me. It hurt so bad. When he finished, he just got up and left the house. I was so humiliated.”

“I can’t believe he raped you,” Jared said softly, though Gina could hear the anger there that he tried to hide. She didn’t have to see Connor’s face to know his anger. His body was trembling with it.

“I found out I was pregnant two months later. I was terrified of losing another baby that I refused to do anything until I was safely far enough along to avoid a miscarriage. Since I had already lost one baby, he was very accommodating. It was like he turned into a different person. He treated me like he did when we were dating.” She misted at the thought. “But I was skeptical.”

Her hand absently went to Connor’s reddish-brown mop and let her fingers comb through it. She could have sworn she heard him sigh. “When I was about five months pregnant, a friend of his moved back to town and he began to spend a lot of time with him. I was relieved that I had a rest from his abuse. He was still verbally abusive, even in front of his friend, but the physical abuse stopped, at least for a while. His friend even asked me once why I didn’t leave him. I told him why and he just shook his head and walked away.

Jim would come over a lot. Frank, that was my husband’s name, told him that since he didn’t have anyone to cook for him that I didn’t mind feeding him. I didn’t mind really. When I was nearly eight months pregnant, it was our anniversary. I cooked a really nice dinner and had candles lit all over the place. I was trying to act like everything was fine with us,” Gina said, choking back a sob.

Jared stood and came around the back of her chair. Leaning down, he wrapped his arms around her shoulders, holding her as close as possible.

“Frank came home late that night. We didn’t drink, but I realized that night that Frank apparently would drink with friends at a bar. He was drunk. He laughed that I had put so much effort into the dinner since I was obviously in love with Jim. I questioned him about what he meant. He had the nerve enough to tell me that he knew I was sleeping with his best friend. I tried to deny it, but he pushed me away. When I tried to get closer again, he pulled out a gun he had in the waistband of his jeans and aimed it at me.
