“Jay.” She whispered. “I…I’
ve-” Her phone rang again. He took it from her, she nodded.

“She’
ll sign the damn things next week!” He said; his accent strong and forceful.

“Who are you, Where’
s Samantha?”

“Giving me a blow job, asshole!” He hung up. She looked at him incredulously. A gasp escaped from her. “Babe, I’m sorry. But who is that moron?”

“He’s my ex husband.” A huge smile covered her face as she imagined what Dan must have looked like when Jay said that. Jay laughed.

“Darlin, I need to ask you something,” He was serious again. “Do you still love him?” How could he think she loved her ex? She was in love with him.

“No, Jay. I don’
t love him!” She wanted to tell him but she thought it was too soon. Whatever time they had left together, she didn’t want to spoil it by being silly.

“Sam, I’
m sorry about this morning. I didn’t mean how it sounded. Can you forgive me?” She put her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply. She loved him so much that she would forgive him almost anything.

Lisa and Nick were drinking a beer and he was teaching her how to play pool. She bent over the table and he was behind her, arms around her holding the cue. She giggled as she missed the shot.

“I’
m gonna have to whip your ass for that girl.” He teased. She turned around and his mouth was inches from hers. He bent his head and their lips touched slightly. Nick pulled away as Pete and Steve came in.

“Come with me.” He took her hand and they left the room. Outside, they got in to Nick’
s Ferrari and sped out of the driveway and down the coast to Nick

s house.

That evening, Jay took Sam to an intimate restaurant up the coast. They drove along in his Porsche. She sat back in the leather seat and drank in the view. It was breathtaking. She had always dreamed about driving along the Pacific coast highway. But to do it in such a beautiful car with someone as famous as Jay beside her, well that was different.

He was great company and he made her laugh. He told her about when he first moved to LA and the first car he owned. It was a rust heap and he literally had to ram it in to first gear.

“It was my first and only experience with a manual gear shift”, His accent was so sexy. A very typical New York accent; where he seemed to accentuate some words more than others.

“My first car was a very old, very contrary Renault four. It was very temperamental”. She recalled her student days and how she very nearly had to get on her knees and beg the car to start.

“Lucky car!” he teased.

They pulled into the car park and Jay put on his shades. He opened the door for her and put his arm around her waist. She felt so proud to be with him. He was so handsome.

The waiter showed them to their table in a very private alcove overlooking the Ocean. The sun was going down and its reflection danced on the waves. Jay reached out and covered her hand with his. She was the most beautiful woman that he had ever seen.

The waiter came back with a bottle of champagne, and poured Sam a glass. Jay looked into her eyes. He didn’t want her to leave and return to London.

“Sam, do you like LA?” He asked her. She smiled.

“It’s hard to believe that you never get a moments peace with the press.” Jay laughed.

“Darlin, I am a rock star. They love me!” He was being very sarcastic. It was part of his charm. But Sam knew he valued his privacy. Guarded it like a hawk. “But seriously, would you live here?” She thought for a moment.

“Yes, if I thought I could make a life here. Who wouldn’t
?” He laughed. She was playing hard to get.

An old Spanish band with an accordion, violin and guitar came over to their table and played a strain of Aranjunez Mon amour. It was very romantic and it filled Sam

s stomach with butterflies.

After dinner, they went for a walk along the deserted beach. Jay had his arm around her and she laid her head on his shoulder. She felt so close to him. To anyone observing them, they looked like a couple very much in love and oblivious to their surroundings.

“Oh, I could stay here in this moment forever.” Sam said softly. Jay smiled and hugged her close.

“You can.” He replied. Further down the beach, they sat down on the sand. And looking out to the sea; its waves caressing the shore line with a gentleness of soft tiny kisses, belying the ferociousness of the power it truly possessed. The sand was hungrily willing the salt water to caress and cover every fibre of its physical being. To have it carry it to the four corners of the globe.

Jay was watching her intently. She seemed lost in thought. She looked very beautiful, in this light; her auburn hair glistened with various hues of golden red to black. Her skin gently tanned and her green eyes sparkling. The reflection of the dying sun on the water, dancing was giving a crystal-like look to them.

Feeling his eyes on her, Sam turned to look at him. She wondered if he was feeling the same way. Could someone like Jay, truly feel the kind of love that envelopes ones being until you ache for a touch, a look, a smile even. Something to hold onto until you can become one with that person? Could it be possible for him to want something so desperately, that you would be willing to make such a fool of yourself, to put your feelings, your heart, in the line of fire for rejection or ridicule? Could she? Was it possible that she could feel these intense emotions for another human being in such a short space of time? But then quantum physics, time travel didn’t enter the equation of the very deepest crevices of the human heart. Time didn’t equate in there. Time didn’t exist. What did exist and what did matter was the fact that she was feeling these overwhelming emotions and when she was with him, Sam felt as though there was nothing that she couldn’t do. And when he was on tour and she hadn

t heard from him, the very essence of her soul had been ripped apart.

These questions she had asked herself a million times on the plane over. But she couldn’t find any answer to them. Not one single answer.

Sam did know one thing though. She knew that whatever time Jay was willing to give her, she would be happy with it. If it was only for the short term then so be it. Any time she spent with him was better than none at all.

Sam reached for his hand. It was soft. His fingers were long for a man

s. And his hands were really tanned.

He bent his head to kiss her on the mouth. Sam closed her eyes as his tongue gently parted her lips. It was light, soft, without the urgency of recent days, when they hungered for each other. Jay cupped her face with one hand and she lay back on the sand pulling him down with her. With tremendous tenderness they kissed with a passion, a love that needed no explanation; needed no words.

“Jay.” She moaned as his mouth moved to her earlobe. His breath was warm and sensuous on her ear.

“I love you,” He whispered into her neck, unsure whether she had heard him or not. He covered her mouth with his as her arms went around him, her fingers in his hair.

The sound of laughter down the beach broke the moment. They laughed and he helped her up. She brushed the sand off and Jay took her hand as they walked back up the beach to his Porsche.

He opened the door for her; before she got in she traced a line down his chest with her finger. Through the fabric of his shirt, she could feel the taut muscles of his chest and the warmth of his skin.

He raised her hand to his mouth, it lingered; tantalizing her. All the while his eyes never left hers. Sam laughed and got into the car. They sped back to his house in the hills.

Chapter Thirteen

The remainder of the time in LA sped by so fast. It had been glorious. Jay took a break from recording and writing and spent it with her. They spent most of the time sailing and relaxing on Jay’s yacht. It had been such fun.

Jay even took her fresh water fishing on a lake. Despite his reputation as a party animal, he loved the outdoors and sport.

They dined in exclusive restaurants and Jay took her shopping and bought her a beautiful gold heart-shaped locket with a small diamond in the centre.

Lisa and Nick had spent a lot of time together and got on famously. Lisa didn’t talk much to Sam about it and Sam didn’t press her on it either. In two days, they would return to London to their lives and this would be a distant memory.

Sam was in the pool when Nick arrived and said in his most charming voice.

“Sweetheart, think you could tear yourself out of there?” He was grinning. “Fancy a real workout?” He loved it. But by now Sam had gotten used to his sense of humour and they actually got on quite well.

“Make me an offer I can’
t refuse then.” She teased as she took his hand to help her out of the pool.

After she had dressed in shorts and vest tee shirt, she left her hair loose and grabbed one of Jay

s hats. She went down the stairs and out into Nick

s SUV and hopped in beside Jay. He whistled as she sat close to him.

“No sex please, just had the seats cleaned!” Nick joked. Jay told him to shut up and drive. They sped out on the freeway and then turned off and half an hour later they were driving down a dirt track. Sam laid back against Jay, his arms around her.

Nick pulled up and said:

“We’
re here. Let

s have fun.” Sam got out and saw a lot of beat up cars, it could have been a movie set except there were no cameras. There was only the foul smell of oil and petrol. Jay grabbed her hand and they followed Nick.

A half hour later they were tearing up the track driving around in old rally cars at high speeds. In the rear view mirror, Sam could see Jay coming up fast behind her and there was no way she was going to let him overtake. Forgetting that they drive on the wrong side of the road, she swerved to the right and he passed her on the left. As he passed he gave her one of his funny waves. Sam laughed out loud. She was having such a good time.

They spent several hours at the race track and had beat up lots of cars. Jay and Nick were the worst. They had the record for the most wrecks.

In the bar, they had a few beers and Jay and Nick shot some pool. Sam felt the luckiest woman alive.

Lisa put on a record on the jukebox. A rival rock band, which brought mock disapproving, calls from Jay and Nick. She laughed and said sarcastically

“Jealousy is a very American thing!” They fell about the place laughing and continued playing.

“This has been so much fun,” Sam said as Lisa sat down beside her. “Thanks Li, for coming with me.” She hugged her fondly. They were best friends.
