Getting back to reality was a little difficult for Jamie. She’d enjoyed Nathan so much when she spent time with him over the weekend. It was now Thursday and she was excited. She hadn’t seen him or heard from him since she got back home early on Sunday morning. It was a little disappointing, but she understood given the circumstances. He had a wife and he couldn’t call and see her whenever they both felt like it.

Even though she felt a twinge of guilt, she couldn’t deny how happy she was. She got to see Nathan that day. He and his wife were coming in for a meeting. She could do without seeing his wife but they were a package deal so she would deal it. She’d dealt with much, much worse.

She looked at her watch and then her assistant let her know through the intercom that Mr. and Mrs. Sparks were prepared. She requested that she send them through.

Jamie blew a rush of wind through her cheeks in an attempt to settle her nerves and prepared to meet them at the door.

Stephanie walked in first with Nathan on her heels. As usual, Stephanie looked like she stepped off the cover of a men’s magazine. If Jamie really liked her, she would have referred her to a stylist to change up the sex tape image that she had going. What grown woman with that much legitimate money would want to look like a porn star? There was a difference between sexy and trashy, and Stephanie tried to teeter along the line but she failed. She wore her hair in waves that framed her face and her purple bodycon dress clung to her curves for dear life. The matching platform stilettos made Jamie want to throw dollars at her.

Nathan however, looked like he stepped off of the cover of Time magazine or Forbes. He looked perfect in his navy blue suit. Everything about him was put together. Why did he have to be with that woman? He belonged with her dammit!

“Good evening to you both, please have a seat so that we can discuss the details for tomorrow,” Jamie said.

“Hello,” Stephanie said coolly and walked over to the couch.

It was a far cry from the phoniness that she was used to getting from Stephanie. Jamie smiled pleasantly and settled her eyes on Nathan.

“Good evening Jamie, how are you?” Nathan asked.

The twinkle in his eye was enough to light a tiny spark inside of her. They still had something special between the both of them, she could see it in his eyes. He still wanted her. She felt stupid for the sense of relief that flooded over her.

“I’m doing very well, thank you for asking. Let’s get started with this meeting. Tomorrow you’re going on the Nicole Raya show and you have to be on your A-game. I need you to really amp up your business that you’re launching. I suggest that you wear sweat suits. I know that it’s not your usual style of dress, but we need people to get pumped and it will make you look more relatable. I’ve already spoken to the host Nicole and she will wear one for your segment as well,” Jamie informed them.

“Great, now I have to go on live television looking like a complete bum,” Stephanie said with an eye roll.

Jamie took a deep breath and Nathan chimed in, “No need to be upset. It’s only for twenty minutes of your life.”

“That’s twenty minutes that I can never get back. It’s going to be on television, everyone will see,” Stephanie complained.

“Stop it. For once in your life, stop being a drama queen. I know it hurts but suck it up.”

Jamie’s eyes widened. Stephanie gasped and looked mildly embarrassed. The only person that seemed a little comfortable was Nathan. The tension could be cut with a knife.

“Stephanie, I’m sorry if this isn’t to your liking. I understand that it’s a little out of your comfort zone but I think that you’ll have a wonderful time,” Jamie told her.

“Yeah, whatever.”

***

The following day, Jamie was floating again. The interview went well, Stephanie plastered on that million dollar smile, and Nathan was his usual charming self. Nathan incorporated all of the ideas and jokes that she suggested, even though Stephanie seemed to purposely leave some things out. It didn’t matter because, overall, it was a great interview. They even got Nicole to do some jumping jacks on live television! The men probably loved Nathan for that because Nicole was carrying around D cups on her chest.

Social media couldn’t get enough of him and his stock was rising. Everything was going according to plan and she’d orchestrated it all. She was worth every penny that he paid her plus some.

Chapter5

“Man, I’m not even trying to hear all of that bullshit. I’ve been telling my truth as I see it. I’m tired of all of these white motherfuckers telling me what I can and can’t say!” Geno protested. He was full of righteous indignation. His cheeks were rosy red and filled with rage.

Jamie tried to stifle a snicker. She was sorry but nobody that looked like him and that had his life could complain about oppression. She was, back in LA, dealing with him. It was time for him to do a public appearance at a children’s hospital with predominantly white kids and he was complaining.

“The white people that you’re complaining about and bashing have been lining your pockets. I’m not saying that you have to go out there and kiss anybody’s ass. You know that’s not my style. However, you have to act as if you have some damned sense. I’m sorry but you are not Kanye West! You are Geno, a privileged mixed kid that grew up in Orange County. Stop the madness. Stop the madness and do what you need to do,” Jamie told him.

“Just because I didn’t grow up in the hood doesn’t mean that I haven’t experienced hardship because of the color of my skin.”

“Boy! You’re lighter than most of the white people that I know. You’re damned near transparent, so stop it. Yes, you’re still black and yes I’m sure that you have experienced discrimination. This is a job. Just like a black factory worker can’t go to his job and curse out all of the executives, you can’t go on national TV and talk that racism stuff, you just can’t.”

“I don’t have a boss,” Geno sulked.

“You have millions of bosses! All of those people out there that buy your music are your bosses. Your record label is your boss, and guess what, right now, I’m your damned boss. Get your bony ass out of this limo and kiss some white babies,” Jamie demanded.

Geno looked pained. He felt like he was bowing down. He hated what he had to do just to get the horrible publicity out of the press. It was all bullshit.

Jamie sighed and softened her voice, “Look, I know this sucks. I know that it hurts inside to have to swallow your pride, but this is about your money. You aren’t any less of a man by doing this. Those kids in there want to see you. You share an ancestry with them.”

“I don’t share shit with them,” he scowled.

“Your mom is white.”

“Fuck her, I don’t claim her. The woman that raised me was black. She came in and took care of me when my mom deserted me. I grew up around white kids, but I was always talked about. I’ve been called names you wouldn’t believe. Yeah, I grew up with a silver spoon in my mouth, but it was laced with arsenic. I hated going to school every day. I never hated being black, but I hated being surrounded by people that didn’t look like me. I hated being black, but never really being black. I didn’t fit in anywhere. The white kids didn’t want to hang out with me and the black kids called me white boy. But I’ll tell you one thing, when I got older, the black kids put all of that petty shit to the side and accepted me. White girls started to like me when I acted black, ironic huh?”

Jamie was shocked; it was the most depth that she’d gotten out of him since she met him. Suddenly, just that quick, she felt connected to him. He was still a brat but he had a reason for being that way.

She patted his hand, “I understand, I really do. Sometimes the deck is stacked against you. However you can’t go around punishing the world for something that happened to you in the past. What I’ve learned is that you only end up hurting yourself. You have to work on letting go of that past hurt and anger. Would you consider seeing a life coach? Not a shrink, a life coach.”

“I don’t have to do that shit on TV do I? I don’t need Iyanla to fix shit for me.”

Jamie laughed loudly, “No, this isn’t for publicity. No one needs to know who you’re seeing and the coach that I have in mind is extremely discreet. I think that it will really help you.”

“But I don’t see anything wrong with the way that I’m living,” he protested.

“Come on, look at the hot water you’re in. Don’t you want a profitable career?”

“Yeah,” he admitted.

“Don’t you want to be happy? You can’t tell me that you’re happy right now. This is some miserable stuff,” Jamie said.

“It is miserable. It’s the worst.”

“Exactly,” she cocked an eyebrow.

He looked like he was mulling it over in his head and eventually surrendered, “Okay. I’ll check it out. Now, it’s time for me to go and kiss some white babies.”

“Great, don’t forget to smile.”

After he exited the car, she smiled. She needed to give him time to go inside and let the cameras follow him. After that she would exit and join him.

While she waited her phone rang; it was Stephanie. She groaned inwardly. It had been a month since the day that Stephanie had to go on live TV with a tracksuit on, and she still wasn’t happy about it. The great thing was that the roll out of their first five fitness clubs was a complete success. Their memberships were through the roof and people couldn’t stop talking about it.

She especially didn’t want to answer the phone because she still felt a little guilty. She and Nathan kept their work relationship strictly business, but they were sneaking sex time whenever possible. As he got more popular, she became more cautious.

Jamie picked up the phone, “Hello?’

“Hello Jamie, this is Steph. I’m calling because Nathan and I would love to have you come over to our home for our next meeting. I’ll get us a fabulous spread and we can do it a bit more informally.”

“Umm, okay I guess,” Jamie said cautiously.

“Unless you don’t want to come. I figured that we’ve been working with you for a while now, so we don’t have to do things so stuffy anymore,” Stephanie said brightly.

This bitch is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I never know what I’m going to get with her. How does Nathan deal with this? One minute she’s super sweet to me and the next I feel like she’s going to stab me in the eye.

“No, it’s not a problem,” Jamie said. “Just send me the address and I’ll be there.”

“Oh, I’m sure you know the address,” Stephanie said.

Jamie’s panic level rose to astronomical heights, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, it seems like everyone knows where we live now. Kind of annoying, but that comes with the territory of being famous.”

“It definitely does.”

“Okay,” Stephanie replied, “I’ll see you then.”

Jamie hung up the phone, closed her eyes, and rested her head against the window. What did Stephanie have up her sleeve? She couldn’t have asked her over out of the goodness of her heart. On the other hand, it wasn’t uncommon for her clients to invite her to their homes. The only problem was that Stephanie didn’t do anything without a purpose.

***

Two days later, Jamie arrived at the house. It was massive. She’d never stepped a foot inside because it didn’t seem appropriate to her. However, Stephanie had invited her and Stephanie was a client, so she had to oblige. Ugh, she hated hanging out with Nathan and his wife. It was difficult to see them together even though they weren’t affectionate with one another.

It just felt like Nathan belonged with her. When she was with him, nothing else mattered. Hell, she couldn’t keep her hands off of him so she was baffled as to how Stephanie could but she was grateful for it. Jamie probably would have upchucked her lunch if she had to watch them be affectionate with one another.

There were smiles that Nathan gave Jamie that she never saw him give to his wife and that made her feel special. The way that he looked at her was totally different from the way he looked at Stephanie. There was heat in his gaze when his eyes locked on to her and mild disgust and indifference with his wife. She was pleased knowing that Nathan was telling her the truth about his marriage—it was dead.

Nathan greeted her at the door, “Good evening. Welcome, come on in.”

She smiled at him, “Thank you very much.”

He closed the double doors behind her and pinched her ass.

“Stop it,” she hissed.

He laughed, “Don’t worry, she’s not here and the staff is gone for a couple of hours with the exception of two and they’re in the kitchen.”

“Where is your wife?”

“She drove into the city to pick up something that she forgot. She should be back in about twenty minutes.”

“You smell wonderful,” Jamie said as she inhaled deeply. “You’re wearing my favorite cologne.”

“I wore it just for you,” he said.

“You don’t play very fair. How am I supposed to get through this dinner if you’re smelling like that? It’s bad enough you look good enough to eat.”

“Maybe because I’ve carved out some time tonight for us to meet. I’ll send you the details.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” Jamie practically whispered.

“How about I show you around the house before we get down to business?”

Jamie’s eyebrow raised. She knew him well enough to know when he was being a very bad boy. He had that naughty look in his eye but she went along with it to appease him. “Okay, show me around and then let’s get to business. No funny stuff.”

Nathan raised his hands in surrender, “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Uh huh,” she laughed.

“Let’s go up the stairs, I want to show you where the magic happens, also known as my office.”

Stephanie decorated the house; she could feel it. None of it looked like Nathan. It was all too frilly, fussy, and feminine. Everything was bright with touches of gold here and pink there. It was beautiful, but it looked like one of those expensive sorority houses. Jamie would go crazy if she lived there.
Where is the leather? Where is the dark wood? Ugh, I want to puke all over the white floor.

He showed her a few rooms and then they stood in the doorway of a huge room. There was a four poster bed in the middle. It was their bedroom. Jamie stopped in her tracks, “I’m not going in there.”

“Why not? It’s just a bed,” he said as he pinned her to the door post and leaned in for a kiss.

She turned her cheek and pushed him back a bit, “Stop it. This isn’t right, this is where you share a home with your wife. It’s bad enough that we’re sleeping together but we’re not going to cut up here.”

Nathan laughed and held her hands close to his chest. That’s what he liked about her, she still tried to have a moral barometer. What he was doing didn’t feel wrong, not at all. He had the woman that he cared about in his home. Why shouldn’t he show her some affection? “My home hasn’t seen sex in years, so maybe we should make this happen. We still have time. What do you say?”

“I say you’re insane. You will have to wait until later,” she said giving him the evil eye.

“Don’t look at me like that, it turns me on. I’ve missed you so much and I don’t think that I can wait.”

Nathan stared at her lips. There he was again, looking at her with smoldering eyes. Whenever he looked at her that way, she wanted to burst into flames. Her breathing became heavy. She wanted him; he was magnetic. Before she knew it, her lips were on his, she couldn’t resist.

“I should’ve known,” she heard a stern voice say from the end of the hallway.

Jamie tore her lips from Nathan's and stepped away. A very pissed off but unsurprised Stephanie stared at them coldly.
