Epilogue
It had been an eventful few months and when Ana reflected on it she could barely believe all that had happened. The small town of Trinity Falls had been shaken by the murders in the forest, but no bears had been caught. She and Colton had grown closer and their relationship had blossomed. Her dreams of moving to Newtown had finally taken hold, and she’d even managed to tease him into living in the city.
They owned an apartment close to her work, but Colton & Ana still spent their weekends in his log cabin. She was managing to tame him though, and he was getting used to going out to restaurants and bars. It was a relationship that she valued and she was glad that all the pain and anguish leading to it was worthwhile.
Whenever she thought about him she smiled, and whenever she was close to him she lit up. Their relationship was so intense but she loved it. They spent time with Glenn as well, and the three of them were firm friends. The sex was still electric and whenever a full moon happened Ana watched with delight as he transformed into a bear, and then waited for him to return when they enjoyed a bout of vigorous and intense sex.
They’d spoken a lot about the future and dating a billionaire had its advantages. Colton and Glenn invested capital into Ana’s business to help it grow. All the time she had spent away from it while they were fighting the other bears meant that she had lost out on a lot of customers; so although she didn’t want to accept any charity Colton and Glenn saw it more as a gift in return for helping them.
She still worked hard at it and it grew enough that she was even able to employ more people. She moved out of the small store and into a larger one, and everything was going her way. She barely returned to Trinity Falls, for in her mind it was a place where only darkness and misery resided. Too many bad things had happened in that place and if she had her way she would never visit it again.
One by one Colton’s cousins came back as well, warned by him after the events with Angelica. They pored over the old tomes and tried to find the truth about what had happened with their ancestors. They worked hard to create a new pack, and they knew that if anyone would come to attack them again they wouldn’t stand a chance.
They sent a message to Europe in the same spirit, and as far as Ana knew they hadn’t received a response. Her life was idyllic and blissful, and it only improved when Colton took her to a fair (despite his dislike for them) and proposed to her on a Ferris wheel. Ana immediately said yes and it didn’t take long for them to arrange things.
Aunt Rose was glad to host the ceremony.
“I always hoped that one day I’d see you get married here,” she said, and then added, “And see you were right to ignore my warnings,” when she learned who Ana was getting married to.
The wedding was a lavish affair and they invited many people from different spheres of life, although Ana didn’t really care about that. It mostly was a political thing. There was a separate, secret ceremony later that night with the bears in the woods. When Ana said her vows she spoke from the heart and felt perfectly content with life, and when she stared in Colton’s eyes she knew that she would be happy forever.
After the ceremony and the party, the two of them took the traditional boat out onto the lake. It was a beautiful, still night and Ana was excited to finally see the lake that lay beyond the tunnel. Colton rowed swiftly and the oars passed through the water silently, creating soft ripples that danced across the water.
“I’ve been waiting so long to see what’s at the end of this tunnel, ever since I was a little girl,” she said.
The trees framed the night sky and covered the stars, providing a little bit of shadow for their eyes to dance in. The moon illuminated and streamed through the gaps between the trees and their eyes sparkled under the sky. The small boat passed the shore where they had shared so much passion before, and they both looked at it with ardor.
Ana crawled over to him and gave him a light kiss. She looked so beautiful in the moonlight and Colton looked at her with love in his eyes. Their golden bands glistened in the moonlight and they were caught in the light in each other’s eyes.
“I did want to take you there when we came here before but it seemed important to you so I had to stop.”
“It was a shock. But I’m glad that I’m seeing it with you. There’s no-one else I’d rather see it with.”
They held out their hands and squeezed lightly as they let the current take them along to the place at the end. As they peered into the darkness they saw nothing, but the mystery was enticing and Ana leaned forward in anticipation.
The tunnel opened up to a wide cavern and as they entered it they saw that the cave was lined with glittering jewels that gave off their own light. They gazed in awe and let the boat rest in the water. There was a small island in the middle and the current guided them to this, and they departed to lay in the soft grass.
“I know that a lot has happened but I wouldn’t have wanted things to turn out any other way,” she said, nestling against Colton’s body.
“You are the only person in the world who I’ve ever felt like I can be myself with. I love Ana Huntington,” he said, smiling.
She smiled too at the use of her new last name and she kissed him deeply. The cave was warm and the jewels glowed radiantly in all different sorts of colors.
“I never thought it would be so beautiful. It’s better than anything my imagination conjured up,” she said, looking up and casting her eyes over it. “If I had my way we’d never leave this place.”
He cupped her head and kissed her deeply as they lost themselves to their passion. Their hands linked together and their wedding bands clinked. The boat rocked gently in the cavern as they spent the night making love, knowing that whatever else happened in their lives they would be able to face it together, and nothing could beat them. She gazed into his loving eyes and felt more connected to him than she had done with anything else in the world, and she was completely happy.
“I don’t know what I did to find you, but I’m glad that I did.”
“I guess it was just destiny,” he said, and as the crescent moon shone in the sky outside the two of them lost themselves in their own world of happiness.
