“I’m sure he will come back. I bet he needs time to process the information and accept that he is a father.”

“I’m sure you’re right,” she muttered through the tears, snivelling and having a large lump in her throat.

“Here you both are…” said a male voice sounding like her father.

Sophie pulled back and wiped her face and snorted badly. Her mum turned her head in the opposite direction.

“Is everything okay?” her father asked.

Her mum shook her head from side-to-side. Sophie gazed at her mum, unsure what or how she was about to approach the matter, or whether she was about to finally tell her father the truth about ten years ago. Her heart sank to the bottom of her stomach, urgently requiring her to tell him the facts, and what mess had been created

“Oh, right, okay…” he said, miffed.

Sophie turned her head and watched him frown.

“Actually…” her mum said.

Sophie quickly turned her head in her mum’s direction, anxiously waiting. Her mum stood, straightened her clothes, and wiped the sorrow from her face. “You’re a granddad,” her mum said, standing before him.

“I’m aware of that.”

“No…twice,” her mum corrected him.

“Sorry.”

“Sophie,” she said, turning around and reached out for her hand.

Sophie stood and swallowed hard. She took hold of her hand, joining her to stand before her father. “You have a grandson who is nine.”

He shook his head puzzled, lifting his brows.

“Our daughter left home because she was scared of me, and carried on with her pregnancy,” she told him.

Sophie watched her father’s reaction intently, shocked and digesting the information.

“What?”

“He’s nine and she carried on with the pregnancy,” her mum said choked.

Her dad stared at her, while bile filled her throat and tears filled her eyes.

“Sophie, is this true?”

Sophie gazed deeply into her father’s eyes and nodded her head up and down.

“Oh bloody hell, come here,” he said.

Sophie moved closer and he pulled her into his chest. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her to the point she could hear his heartbeat. Then her mum joined in the embrace.

Sophie could not believe how her news finally, after all these years, had come out and now…she could, finally indulge in something she had craved for many year—the innocence of love.
