A
fter Jax brought
me dinner my energy came back, and he informed me that Tori wanted to talk to me. I hope it’s about my place in the clan. Now that I’m a werebear I need her to understand I’m not a threat, I’m an asset. The past day’s events have made me realize I miss living in a world of emotions and love. I had that as a child before my parents became enamored with the Eradicators, and now that I’m experiencing it again, I’m questioning everything I’ve known for the past decade.

The male-dominated mentality of the Eradicators has always bothered me, but I was able to handle the need for no close ties, and the cold, calculated thinking required of an assassin. I was one of the best marksmen and enjoyed a heightened status because of it. But the reality is, I can’t kill without just cause. And while I fear my hardened heart may take time to soften to others beyond my true mate, I believe I will find my way back.

Jax leads me down the stairs by my hand, and my palm is damp with sweat like the last time I was called to speak to the alpha. He says, “Don’t be nervous. Tori is happy you’ve joined us.”

I squeeze his fingers as I recall a conversation I overheard between Jax and Tori during my change. I say, “She’s just happy you’re mated and will bring more children to the Veilleux clan.”

“You heard us?”

Jax said he couldn’t wait to be a father. The idea of having his baby makes me smile. “I did.”

He stops and turns to face me. Because he’s one stair down we’re eye level. He asks, “How do you feel about that?”

I smile as I contemplate being a mother. I surprise myself with the longing I feel, because a family wasn’t something I’d considered once I was chosen to be an assassin. “I like it.” I quickly add, “I’m not in a rush or anything, but yes, someday I do want to have children with you.”

Jax’s lips are soft on mine as he kisses me quickly and says, “Whenever you’re ready, say the word. I can’t wait to give my best effort for the cause.” He winks at me and turns forward to continue our descent.

When we get into Tori’s study she walks over and opens her arms to me. My werebear nose takes in her natural scent as if it’s perfume I’d associate with a close friend. We embrace, and she says, “Welcome to the Veilleux clan, Sasha. I’m honored to have you join us.”

When we step away from each other I say, “Thank you for being so welcoming. I know it might be hard to trust me, but I assure you, I plan to prove my worth.”

We move to the couches, and the leather is slick on my hand when I brace my sore body and lower myself to sit. Tori asks, “How do you feel about leaving the Eradicators?”

The tone of her voice is stern and deep, and I think she just asserted her alpha power over me, because I offer more than I planned to say. “I believe they are the real enemy, and I’m struggling with the way I blindly followed them for so long.”

“I suspect they have cult-like mechanisms in place to keep you from wondering why things are done. But you can tell me more about your upbringing later. I want to talk to you about what you’ve been trained to do.”

“I’ve been trained to kill, but if I were good at it, I wouldn’t be here.” The older woman I remember from before seems to appear out of thin air and hands me a glass of water.

“Perhaps you have a conscience, Sasha. I watched your fight to live through the change after a gunshot injured you badly enough that even as a werebear you shouldn’t have lived. You definitely have a warrior spirit.”

I sip my drink, and cool liquid slides down my throat as I glance at Jax and recall how I reacted to save him. The truth is I do like the fight. “I think so too. Jax said you’d like me to be one of your warriors.”

“I would.” Tori leans forward a bit and says, “If you find it’s not working out, we’ll try something else.”

I nod. “I can also offer a lot of insight into how the Eradicators and other hunter groups operate. Would that be of value to you?”

“Definitely.” Tori smiles with what I think is genuine warmth, and she changes the subject. “Tomorrow you’ll feel much better, and Jax should take you out for your first shift.” She sighs. “Goodness, it wasn’t that long ago that I changed, and I can remember how awesome all of this is. Enjoy it. We’ve been blessed with an amazing ability.”

“I will,” I say as Jax nudges my thigh with his, and I think about the fact that being a werebear is more like an amazing ability than the curse I thought when I first found out what I was.

Tori begins to relay stories of funny things that happened when she first changed, and her husband, Keith, comes in to join us. We spend time laughing and talking as we become friends.

When it’s time to go up to bed, I lean against Jax in exhaustion. He puts his arm around my shoulders and gives me the extra strength I need to get to my room. Once we’re there I say, “Stay with me tonight.”

“I planned on it, Sasha.”

I sink on the bed, and Jax helps me remove my shoes. “Good, because I’m not sure I ever want you to leave my side.”

A sly grin covers Jax’s face as he reaches for the hem of my shirt. “Want me to break out the handcuffs?”

I tap my lip with my finger as if I’m contemplating the question. “Maybe tomorrow when I have more energy.”

Jax continues to help remove my clothes, and I dress in an oversized sleep shirt. Once we brush our teeth he strips down to his underwear and climbs in the bed to spoon me. I lean against the man I love and wonder how only days ago I planned to kill him. I inhale the scent of him that is like an elixir.
Thank you, Destiny, for giving me the life I never dreamed I could have.

I
stare
at a breathless and nude Jax as I say, “That has to have been the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced!” I just shifted for the first time, and Jax took me for a run through the woods that included a swim in the river and even fishing. My speed, agility, and power were such a rush, I felt like a kid as I reveled in it all for pure pleasure.

Jax frowns at me as he steps closer. “You’re hurting my feelings.”

I place my hand on his firm chest, and his heartbeat pounds under my palm. “Besides
that.
Jeez, who knew werebear were so sensitive.”

Jax rubs his thumb over my nipple as he leans in close, and I inhale sharply as desire shoots right to my core. “I don’t know,” he says, “but the way you respond to my touch makes me think you might have some idea.”

As he kisses me I slide my hand down to grip his hardening length and communicate in our minds.
“I like your sensitive side.”

“Yeah? Race you upstairs.”

I squeal as Jax pinches my bottom and takes off in a sprint. The screen door at the back of Tori’s house slams shut behind us as our feet pound over the wood floor of the baking kitchen and through the main one. I’m sure we pass a few servants, but I imagine they’re familiar with the way newly bonded mates act during mating season. Apparently our constant desire to have sex is normal.

Jax makes it to our room before me, and when I close the door I lean against it to catch my breath as I gaze at the impossibly gorgeous man standing before me. I recall how he affected me when we first met. I say, “You ruined everything I knew about werebear, you know. You were supposed to be a feral beast.”

My mate lets out a low growl as he steps close and grabs my hands. “You couldn’t resist me.” I chuckle as I recall how even though I was pissed he had me trapped in his car, I was definitely attracted to him. Jax lifts my hands above my head, and the wood of the door is cool on my skin as he presses me against it. He says, “You ruined hunters for me.” He nips at my neck with his teeth, and I gasp at the pleasure it brings as he says, “You’re supposed to be a scum-sucking lowlife who should be killed.”

His lips nibble at my skin as he moves up toward my ear, and I say, “Damn fate ruined us.”

Jax whispers in my ear. “Damn fate made me the happiest man alive. God, I love you.”

I thrust my pelvis against his rock-hard cock as I say, “Stop talking and show me.”

He releases my wrists, but I keep them up as he slides his palms down my arms, making me tremble with need. “You are so beautiful, Sasha.” Jax keeps moving his hands down my sides and lowers himself to his knees, where he inhales deeply and lets out a sigh. “Never going to get enough.”

His thick mane of dark hair is smooth in my fingers when I thread them through it, and I spread my legs to allow him access to what he wants. I sigh as he begins to lap at my sensitive folds, and I moan as the pleasure washes over me. As my climax builds my knees begin to buckle, and Jax grabs my bottom and lifts me as he stands. He tosses me on the bed, and I giggle as I scramble back.

He crawls over me, and I gaze up at the man I’m sure I can’t live without. His face is smooth when I place my hand on his cheek, and he leans into my palm as my heart nearly bursts with my feelings for him. I say, “I can’t believe how much I love you, Jax.”

He guides his cock toward my channel as he says, “Shut up and show me.”

I grin at him, and firm muscles ripple beneath my fingers as I grab his butt and yank him closer. Jax slides into me to seat himself deep, and the familiar low rumble of his pleasure vibrates through us. We move with a rhythm that is all ours, and I’m enveloped in the connection we share as the bear inside me rushes to the surface. I gaze at Jax’s neck and am overcome with a need to bite him to seal our true mate bond for life.

I pant out, “Jax, I want to bite you.”

“Oh babe, yes.” He stops moving and captures me in his intense blue gaze as he says, “But let me bite you first. You need to experience what you should have the first time.”

I nod, and we continue our dance. Jax knows when I’m close as I flex around him, and I stare in amazement as he opens his jaw wide and bear teeth grow. I tilt my head back to allow him access, and while the puncture of his bite stings, the ecstasy that crashes through me makes me scream with an orgasm that rocks every cell of my body. I’m not sure how long it lasts, and I lay twitching beneath Jax as he laps at my wound, which I’m sure has already closed up with my werebear healing powers.

“Now that,” I say, “was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.”

Jax chuckles, and I find a sudden surge of energy to flip us over so that he is on his back. I straddle him and slide down his thick erection as I say, “It sounds wrong to say this, but I can’t wait to bite you.”

My mate’s eyelids flutter as he basks in the sensations of my movement, and he says, “Don’t let that stop you.”

I don’t, and when Jax tenses up I call on my bear and let her answer the primal call to claim her mate.
Our mate.
I watch him experience the same bliss I did. When he’s landed back on earth I snuggle into his chest. Our bond is now complete, and it’s as if tendrils of our beings are now intertwined. His scent is stronger, his touch is more familiar, and our hearts seem to beat in time.

I flash back to the day he made love to me with the music from his saxophone, and I lean up to gaze at him. Tears spill down my cheeks as I begin to sing a lullaby from my childhood. As Jax watches me his eyes mirror the intensity of emotions I felt when he played for me. Like our music, our past is part of why we’re meant to be.

Jax lifts up to kiss the tears on my cheeks, and I taste the salty residue on his tongue when he kisses me. I know the Eradicators will be back, and both Jax and I will be in danger. But destiny has a plan, and with the strength of our love, I know everything will be okay.
