KALIVE MILLER
WASHINGTON, DC

Kali sat quietly in the passenger seat, with his right arm gripping in pain. He wasn’t sure where he hurt himself because life for him in the days preceding moved so fast. All he knew was that it hurt so badly that it temporarily took him away from his thoughts of revenge and hate. He removed the hatchet in the leather case, which rested on his back and set it on the floor of the truck. His cousin Vaughn, who was driving, continued to move silently and cautiously down the Maryland streets. Surveillance was heavy because of the recent meeting Kali had with Jace. They invited beef into their lives and knew it was just a matter of time before things popped off.

“You aight, man?” Vaughn asked. He looked at him through his dark shades and then back at the road.
“Naw. I’m still fucked up with this nigga Jace.”
“Cousin, why do you give a fuck about this dude? He ain’t even blood.”
“He was like blood.” Kali said. “We were like family before shit started jumping off. You know this nigga actually had the nerve to ask me about that bitch Harmony again? Why is he so green over that slut?”
“I never liked him.”
That wasn’t the response Kali wanted but he brushed it off as his truth. If Jace didn’t want the friendship back fuck it, but he was going to give him his fucking money. After all, Jace owed him. He said he’d kill the dude Massive and he did but he didn’t get his payday. Yet part of him, the part that loved him like family, was hurt by the whole shit. His only reason for going off on his own was so that he could prove to him that he wasn’t a loose cannon, and that he could come through when he needed him. Now, since Jace dissed him none of that seemed to matter anymore.
“Well I loved that dude like a brother.” Kali said. “But if he gonna break the bond we had, then the shit’s on him. I’ma find away to get at him, I just gotta think.” Kali rubbed his sore arm again. “So where you tuck the money I got from Massive?”
“It’s at my crib.”
Kali frowned. “Which one nigga?”
“You know, the one out Maryland.” Vaughn said. “I know it’s gonna be good there. Plus I put it somewhere where it can’t be found.”
“You don’t think that bitch gonna fuck with it do you? Because I started to take it to Harmony’s crib but that chick liable to steal it from me. Forcing me to break her jaw.”
“Again?”
They laughed. “Yeah. Again.”
“I feel you, but don’t worry, the dough good there. She ain’t gonna fuck with your shit and risk me killing her ass. She a young girl, in college and shit. All she care about is them books. That’s why I keep her around.”
“Good.” Kali looked off into the distance and saw a few corner boys making secretive hand-to-hand motions. He couldn’t believe they were doing the shit out in the open. Taking a blunt from the glove compartment he fired it up. The smoke filled his lungs and at first seemed to choke him. He released the air and leaned further back into the seats. “But you said you know somebody we could cop from right?” Kali looked over at Vaughn and handed him the fire. “I’m really trying to start my own shit and I wanna move on Jace’s blocks too.”
“Yeah, I know this dude. And with the hit you did on Massive, you got more than enough cash to make things happen.” He made a turn on Indian Head Highway. “What you want though?”
“The white. I ain’t fucking with nothing else yet.”
“Then he’s your man.”
One minute he wanted to be a dope boy, the next minute he wanted to be a hit man and then he wanted to be a king pin. He was all over the place and he knew he needed to make up his mind.
“Cool, so how much you think we should get?”
“Let’s see what he saying first. I wouldn’t want you to put all of your money out there if you don’t have to.”
He didn’t sound too confident and this bothered Kali. “Aight, set that shit up.”
“I’m on it. So you really want me to take you back to that spot?” Vaughn asked. “Because I’m not sure if it’s a smart move.”
“I ain’t staying long. Plus I left some shit over there I got to get back. After that, I’m done with that bitch’s crib.”
