The Next Morning

When I woke up I was on my back outside and felt a dog licking my hand. At first I thought I was tripping until it lifted its leg and pissed in my face.

“Get the fuck away from me?!” I yelled backing away from the dog. It ran away and I leaned up against a dumpster. After wiping the urine off of me with a newspaper on the ground, I spit five or six times trying to get the taste out of my mouth. This shit was Déjà vu.

My head throbbed viciously and I knew once again last night must’ve gotten out of control. That was the only fucked up part about me. When I drank, I drank real hard and would often lose time and not remember what I’d done the night before.

Eventually standing up, every bone in my body ached. It felt like I fought five or six niggas and I couldn’t remember shit. For real the last thing I recalled was that we jumped in a cab after the party and that’s pretty much it.

Reaching in my pocket for my cell phone I called all of my homies to find out where they were. When I couldn’t get a hold of them, I walked down the block trying to find out where I was. There were a lot of stores in the area and I knew I was definitely in the hood. Somewhere on the Southside in DC.

“Hey, cutie!” Some girl called out to me. “You fine as shit. You got a girl?”
When I turned around I saw a washed up looking older woman in a long blue dress with big yellow flowers on it. Her teeth were missing and her mouth seemed to be mostly jaw.
“Naw. I’m good.” I told her. “Thanks anyway though.”
“As pretty as you are you must got somebody at home, huh?” She continued. “Is that it?” She asked. “That’s why you don’t want this pussy?”
When she called me pretty it dawned on me that my hat was missing. I never went anywhere without my hat because I hated being referred to as a female. Yeah I know what the doctor told me I was some months back, but in my mind, that wasn’t the case. I was then and would always be a nigga.
“So you not going to talk to me?” She continued.
I ignored her. When I spotted a cab I decided to do what I did best. So I hopped into it without any money.
“Where to?” the black driver asked me suspiciously. He must’ve already known what I was up to.
I gave him an address not too far from my house when my phone rang. It was Wokie and I quickly answered.
“Where are you nigga?” He said. “We were looking all over for you.”
“I’m in a cab.” I said rubbing my head, still smelling the piss of the dog on my skin. “Why ya’ll leave me and shit?” Then I paused. “Aye, yo, turn that air conditioning down some.” I said to the driver. He rolled his eyes but he did it.
“Nigga, you don’t remember last night?” Wokie continued.
I hated that question because it always meant they knew something I didn’t. And if we were all together, they’d spend the next two hours laughing and telling me the story in different versions.
“Naw…I don’t remember shit. So give it to me straight.” “First we go to the party right…”
“I remember the party.” I said trying to prove I wasn’t that far off.
“Well you remember getting mad because Glitter was talking to her cousin on the dance floor?”
“Her cousin?” I remembered her on the dance floor, but I didn’t remember it being her cousin. Then again I didn’t know what her cousin looked like. “Fuck is you talking about? She was dancing with some dude.”
“My nigga, I’m telling you it was her cousin.” He paused. “Anyway, you step to this dude and he drops you.”
“He hit me in my face?”
“Yeah! That’s when me and the crew banked this nigga on the floor! I’m telling you that shit was wild.”
“Go ‘head.”
Damn! I played myself again.
“Anyway, so after we caused a major fight at the party, we all went outside and hopped into a cab. We went to this restaurant and you and Glitter got into it there.”
“Why?”
“Some nigga was trying to give her his number and you flipped. Even after she said she didn’t want the nigga’s number and told him to his face.”
“I…I can’t remember none of that shit.”
“I know.” He said. “Anyway, the dude starts busting off in the restaurant and we got out of there. I think somebody got shot and everything. We thought you were behind us but you went the other way. And we lost you.”
“Fuck! Did anybody in Mad Max get hit?”
“Naw.” He paused. “But Glitter had another seizure when we made it to my house. It was real bad too.”
“Is she okay?!!!”
“Yeah, man. She’s fine.”
I was relieved. Glitter had seizures on a pretty frequent basis and sometimes it would happen out of nowhere. I always worried about her because she looked to be in so much pain when it would happen.
“I’m glad she’s good, man. Damn!”
“Yeah she’s fine.” Wokie continued. “But she said she’s tired of your shit. And that if I spoke to you to tell you it was over.”
My heart dropped. “She said…she said like it’s over for real? Or like, if I called her shit would be cool?”
“Sounds serious to me, homie.”
“Like really serious?”
“I don’t know how serious it gotta be for you, but she sounded like she was done.”
When I got off the phone with him I knew I had to beg Glitter to take me back. Even if I had to stop fucking with the Henny I was willing to do that. Unlike some people I could stop drinking anytime I wanted.
Really
.
To be with her, it wasn’t even a problem.
It was me and her against the world and I had to prove it.
