“Stop
wasting your courage against me, you shall never win. You
will
be mine!” he said
and took a couple of steps towards me. I reached out my arms to
stop him, but he persisted until his chest rested against my hands.
Pushing him back, my hand slipped because of the blood. I fell
forward and his leg wrapped around my foot. Losing my balance
entirely, he pushed me to the floor. Swiftly he joined me, pinning
me down. His breathing quickened in anticipation and his eyes were
wild, exposing his bloodlust and desire. I squirmed beneath his
weight, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get myself out of this
mess.

Adam’s eyes met mine and
for a moment his gaze softened and revealed a true admiration for
me. But soon enough it faded and his hunger took over.

“Get off me!” I screeched
and again tried to get out from under him. His grasp tightened,
cutting off my circulation. I cried out in pain.

“Ah!
Please, you don’t want me… you don’t even
need
me,” I said, trying to distract
him. But it was to no avail. He lunged for my precious vein again.
The force of his bite sent a sharp pain down my neck that shot down
to my toes. My body quickly numbed and my mind became hazy as he
drank my blood greedily.

Looking back now, I know
that I was trying to detach myself from what was happening, like an
escapee. However the demons inside my head and the demon that drank
from me so greedily would not let me escape. Adam’s voice entered
my mind bringing me back.

“You
taste
so
good
… you
are what I am addicted to
.” I felt
his lips release the wound. His hands slid down my back as his
fingers found the bottom of my sweater. He lifted the turtleneck
high enough to reveal my breasts. Without delay he raised it the
rest of the way over my head and tossed it aside. I was numb and
unable to move or fight back. The lack of blood made the room spin.
I blinked once, twice…I tried to speak out in protest, but no words
left my lips.

Adam suckled and fondled my
breasts. I was involuntarily aroused by him. Gently this time, his
fangs slid into the flesh of my breast. My whole body fell into a
spasm of delight. With each swallow of blood he took, the further I
swooned. I was his and I didn’t care. All my words of objection
faded, leaving me to languish in his cold arms. I felt free of my
body and my critical mind. This was an experience I had never felt
before and silently, I was grateful to Adam for giving me this. For
what it was, it was like a high.

With eyes closed, I
absorbed every caress, bite and his enchanting scent into my being.
I lay there like an addict, writhing in delight. My mind now raced
in the want and need of his luscious blood; his blood that was now
mingled with my own. I wanted him desperately but I could not move.
My body had become my enemy and was a weight holding me down,
keeping me from what I needed.

My eyes fluttered open and
I saw Adam leaning over me. It was not until that moment that I
realized how vulnerable I truly was. He had taken a potentially
deadly amount of my blood from me. His eyes were blood red. Taking
the amount he did from me enlarged the veins in his eyes. Part of
me saw him as grotesque but the rest of me saw him as someone I
could indulge my thirst in.

Adam leaned in towards me,
revealing his bulging jugular vein. Gently his hand slid under my
head and he carefully lifted my head to his neck and allowed
himself to be the victim of my bloodlust. Every movement I made
felt like slow-motion and the sensations of opening my mouth and
slicing my fangs into his neck were lengthened, making it ever more
sensual.

Adam’s blood gushed forth
the instant my fangs pierced his flesh, filling my mouth and
spilling past my lips. Ravenous, I drank deeply, enjoying the
sensation of his blood cascading down my throat. I was intoxicated
as his ancient blood surrounded me in a decadent embrace. With each
swallow of his essence, my body began to tingle and vibrate with an
intensity I had never experienced. The wounds that would not heal
moments ago had now disappeared. I felt my strength grow with each
passing second and my hunger began to turn ravenous as I fed from
Adam.

Never had
I felt this way with Elijah, despite his blood being that of the
first vampires. But Adam, Adam
was
the very first vampire. He possessed the purest
form of our corrupted blood. I knew his blood was changing me. It
was the oddest sensation but also there was a sense of realization
with this change. The deeper I drank from him, the more my
benevolence seemed to erode. I knew that as my lips curled around
this fountain of immortality, I was no longer the Deirdra I knew.
After taking Mylana’s immortal gift two centuries ago I had changed
and now this was changing me again. I knew his blood was to be my
heroin; I never wanted to stop drinking it.

Without warning, Adam
reached for my shoulders and pushed me away. Wiping my bloodied
mouth, his intense eyes met my own. I rose to my feet and looked
down at him. My body felt as though I could not drink any more but
my thirst was stronger than my common sense. Already half naked, I
slipped out of my leather pants and tossed them aside. I then
reached for Adam to stand with me. Now standing before me, I
caressed his muscular chest and let my fingers find the bottom of
his white shirt and began unbuttoning it. He did nothing to stop me
nor did he say a word. He then leaned in towards me and firmly
pressed his cold lips against mine. I crushed my bare chest against
his when I felt his tongue play with mine.

When our lips parted, I
knelt before him, reached for the button on his pants and stripped
them from him. Sliding down his naked body, now on my knees, I
found the lush vein of his inner thigh. I bit down firmly, causing
Adam to cry out in aching pleasure. I licked the blood that
trickled from the wound I had created. Eventually I wrapped my lips
around it and took deep, lengthy swallows. I moaned in delirium. I
felt Adam’s hands caress the back of my head. Roughly he grabbed my
hair and pulled my head back causing me to look up at him. A smirk
crossed my crimson stained lips. His once engorged veins were now
back to the way they were before we began our deadly liaison.
Funny, all I thought at that moment was: I didn’t care if he killed
me right then and there. I was more concerned with living with the
consequences of what I had done if I survived this. So, I fell into
a suicidal mentality.

“Go
ahead, drain me. Kill me. Maybe this will end it all. You’ve had me
and I you, the hunger that drives us is now not the only thing that
binds us. I’m ready to fall the rest of the way to hell. Do it,” I
said, my voice
coloured
with attitude, mocking
him. Forcefully, my hair still clamped in his hands, he pulled me
up. I jumped to my feet and a cry escaped my lips. Before I could
say anything else, he pulled me to him and again bit into my neck,
the area still tender from his first attack. I pressed my body
against his and wrapped my arms around him. I nuzzled him even
closer into the crook of my neck, made my way for his, and bit
down. Together we were locked in our bloodlust within each other’s
arms, tasting the embrace. The room, the rest of the house and
surroundings seemed to fall away and disappear. The world seemed
not to exist; only Adam and I.

A loud crash broke us from
our ecstasy. The door flew open and there stood a weak and
ill-looking Brenna. She stood in the doorway holding onto the
frame, her face expressing remorse–not what I was expecting at all.
I noticed blood smeared on her neck and although bruising was
evident, it had almost completely healed.

I took a step back away
from Adam and looked about for my clothes. Spotting them, I
retrieved them quickly and began to dress. Having not seen Brenna
in weeks, I looked at her questioningly. Unable to hold my gaze on
her, I looked over at a fully dressed Adam. However, feeling
ashamed, I couldn’t look at him either. It was only when Brenna
finally began to speak that I looked at her.

“I did something I
shouldn’t have,” she began, addressing Adam and not me. “I don’t
know what came over me… It was like I couldn’t stop myself.” Brenna
stopped and bowed her head.

“What did you do, Brenna?
Tell me,” the anger in his voice made her quiver in
fear.

“It’s Stone–I turned him.”
As she said this, a single red tear rolled down her white
cheek.

“WHAT?” I shrieked. Brenna
jumped and stepped back, her blood tears now flowing freely. I was
in disbelief. That was not supposed to be his future. It shouldn’t
have been this way.

“What possessed you to do
such a thing, Brenna?” Adam asked, taking control over the
situation. His voice was eerily calm.

“I… I
don’t know what happened. I don’t know
why
I did it. It was like I had to.”
Brenna bowed her head in shame. “Please, don’t hurt me,” she added.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Where is
Stone, Brenna?” I asked, practically yelling at her. The guilt and
shame expressed in her features made me furious.
How could she have done this
?

“He attacked me after I
turned him. He took so much blood from me that I blacked out. I
don’t know where he went.” Brenna looked up at me with red-rimmed
eyes. “He was so angry.”

Without
saying another word I raced for the door, knocking into Brenna as I
roughly passed by her. I made my way down the hall and out the back
door. Adam said nothing to stop me, nor did Brenna. When I opened
the outside door the cold air hit me. As I hopped in the car and
turned the ignition, the radio began to blare Rob Zombie’s
Living Dead Girl.
I shook
my head at the irony of it all.

With spinning wheels, I
drove off. I had to find Stone. There was so much he didn’t
know.

Chapter 12

(Stone - December 7,
1999)

Stumbling down the barren
street, Stone shivered uncontrollably. He had been running for a
full hour until his body began to fight against him and was unable
to keep that pace. Despite his new strength he was beginning to
feel weak. Stone’s anger and fear alone is what drove him forward
at this point. Not knowing exactly where he was, he did however
recognize that it was the south-east side of Montreal, just outside
of the city limits. He was no longer surrounded by houses. His only
company was the darkness and the stars that sparkled high above his
head. His legs felt like rubber and his whole body
vibrated.

Stone stopped in
mid-stride. Tripping over his own heavy feet, he fell to his knees
and onto the hard cold pavement. Rubbing his eyes, he thought what
he saw was an illusion. However, his eyes did not deceive him. The
single lit window of an old enormous brick building was in fact
real. His first thought was ‘thank god, I found shelter’ then he
wondered who he’d have to fight for it. With an exaggerated sigh he
rose to his unsure feet. He began to take the side road that led to
the building. He didn’t care whether he had to take it aggressively
from some transients. He was going to rest there and nothing was
going to stop him from doing so.

No one
had been up the road in days. Old tire trails had been covered by
the many days and nights of snow. However, someone
had
been there. All Stone
hoped for was that they were gone, despite the fact there was an
illuminated window that suggested otherwise. All he could think
about was sleep–precious sleep. He couldn’t believe how tired he
had become. As he trudged his way up the drive, he realized how
long he had been running and how long he had been out in the
freezing cold without shoes or a shirt.

“Damn!” he muttered,
impressed with his new self.

Finally he approached the
large wooden double doors of the building. He looked about
nervously turning around to make sure no one had followed him.
Returning his gaze to the front doors, he saw an old brass plaque
clouded with dirt and frost. Reaching out with his bare hand, he
wiped at the plaque and revealed the inscription:

Hospice Ste-Dymphna-de-Geel

Sœurs de la Persévérance

It was an insane asylum.
Stone’s fatigued state led him to find it amusing and he was unable
to hold back his laughter. Regaining his composure, he reached for
the doorknob and turned it, hoping it would open.

“Oh, for Christ’s sake!
Dammit, you just couldn’t be open, huh? Huh?” Stone complained to
himself. Agitated, he raised his foot and kicked at the door, once,
twice, three times. Finally the door burst open with a bang.
Stepping into the open room that was once the reception area, his
eyes examined everything with his new sight. Closing the door
behind him he entered the room. The room was cool but a relief from
the outside exposure.

A worn ebony front desk
that was coated in a thick layer of dust was placed in the center
of the foyer-like area. The desk must have been quite beautiful at
one point with the elaborate carved scroll work around its edges
and claw feet. The paint that coated the walls was grayish-brown,
chipped, peeling, and revealed the old wooden slats beneath the
thin plaster. Cobwebs swayed with the slight draft that seeped
through the cracks in the windows.
