Tristan
My sleep was disturbed by some sound outside the door. Someone was banging on the door like crazy.
Who could it be? Nikki?
No, she couldn't be back. She wasn't picking up my calls and didn't reply. She was angry at me and she had the right to be.
I opened the door. Carrie was standing outside in her pajamas.
"Carrie, what are you doing here at this time? Is everything all right?" My mind searched every possibility for her being there, and the answers frightened me.
"Nikki is in danger. We have to go."
"What happened?" I grabbed my jacket and the keys to the car.“Where is she? How is she?" I felt my knees going weak; The thought of something happening to Nikki made me worse.
"Let's go. I'll explain everything in the car."
"Where are we going?" I opened my car door.
"I'll drive the car,“ Carrie said. She looked tense.
"No, I'm driving." I couldn't let her drive when Nikki was in danger. I had to rush to the place where she was.
She held the car door and started crying.
I held her hand. "Carrie, would you please tell me if she is okay? My heart is on the verge of breaking down. For God's sake, tell me what happed to her?" I was so angry that I wanted to slap her and ask her where Nikki was.
"Nothing’s happened to her yet, but If we don't reach in time, I don't know what Chase will do to her." A silent cry spilled out of her mouth.
"What the hell? What is she doing with Chase? I'll kill him if he touches her." My head was boiling with the hatred." But where the hell is she now?"
I pushed harder on the gas.
"We are going to Cherry Street. That’s another home of Nikki's dad where he is keeping something Nikki wants."
"Is that the same thing, Nikki wanted me to get from her dad?" I remembered Nikki's conversation couple of days ago. She’d asked me to help her and get something for her from her dad. But I wasn't sure if I could get that to her. Maybe I was afraid to put my life in danger. But now I didn't care about my life and what would happen there.
I'll save you, Nikki, no matter what
.
"Yes, I guess she told you that."
"And that was the plan you were talking about few days ago, is that right?"
"Yes, I guess you had your suspicions. But I'm sorry for that. There is no one I can trust or Nikki will trust other than you."
"Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to her." I punched the dashboard, "But why the hell she is with him? Did he force her?"
"No. In fact, that crazy woman went to the house on his invitation."
"Invitation?" My eyebrows shot high. There was no way she could have gone to him at his invitation.
"He offered her the thing she wanted."
My head was about to burst now. Everybody was keeping secrets from me. I was going to jump in the fire and still I didn't know why.
What the hell is this thing
?
"For God's sake, can you tell me what is this thing?" I almost screamed at Carrie.
"Her son."
"What?" I pressed the brakes so hard that the car almost crashed on the roadside post box.
"Did you just say her son?" I couldn't believe she had a son. Why did she hide it from me?
"Yes, her son. Don't tell me that you have changed your loyalties now and she doesn't mean anything to you."
"No that's not the case. I still love her," I said in a frenzy and then I realized what I had just said. "I mean I still like her." I tried to cover my words, but looking at the smile Carrie had on her face, I knew I’d blown it.
"Don't sweat, I'm not going to tell her that. Just drive and save her," She giggled.
I pushed hard on the gas. I couldn't talk with Carrie any more. I was a bit awkward, a bit frozen and a bit afraid for Nikki. I wasn't sure how I should react after learning that she has a son. What about her husband? She might not have one, a mistake in college maybe. If she had a husband, she wouldn't have slept with me. What the heck, why am I thinking too much about it? I needed to save Nikki; everything else could wait.
When we turned onto Cherry Street, Carrie pressed my shoulder and pointed me to a large house. It was an old house, very big with many rooms. I bet it had cost Mr. Jordan more than a million.
"She’s in there." She pointed to Nikki's car. "Oh, my God, we’re late. What if she is in that monster's hands?" Carrie pushed her face in her palms and started crying again.
I got out and checked the hood of Nikki's car. It was still hot and that means Nikki had just gotten here.
"Don't worry, Carrie, she must have come only about five minutes ago. The hood is still hot."
"Are you sure? Maybe we still have a chance to save her." Her face brightened.
"Yes, we do," I replied, but I wasn't sure how I was going to do this."I think you should wait in the car, and if I'm not back in fifteen minutes, call the cops," I said to her and walked towards the house.
The house was well-concealed; many security cameras were placed around the house. I bet a few dogs would be inside. I checked around, but there was no clear way to get in. There was no way I could sneak in. My heart beat was rising. I had to get in and I wasn't sure how to. Nikki's life was at stake and I was standing outside thinking about a way to get in.
I looked at the house and then at Nikki's car. She had a Range Rover which could easily destroy the gate and get me to the porch. Yes, I could do that. I knew how to start a car without a key. I’d learned it from one of my friends and now was the time to get that working.
I went under Nikki's car to hot-wire it.
"What are you doing there? Shouldn't you be inside by now?" Carrie said.
"I need to get this car working so I can destroy the gate and get to the porch. I bet many dogs are out there and may be few gunmen. Didn't you see the security around the house?"
"I have the car keys."
"What?" I crawled out from below the car. "You could have told me earlier."
"How the hell would I know you were trying to get that car working?" she said.
"Okay, forget it. Give me the keys." I started the car and crashed it on the outer gate. The Range Rover easily smashed the iron gate and, in no time, I was in front of the porch. I jumped out; somebody was running to the door. I guessed it was some guard. I hid behind the door, pressed up against the wall. A man with a gun in his hand opened the door and peeked out. I grabbed his gun and pulled him out to hit on his neck. In no time, he was licking the floor. I dropped the gun there and walked in.
I didn't know where Nikki was and the house was huge. My best chance was to check in the CCTV room. And I guessed I knew where it should be. A separate room with a black door was at one corner on the ground floor. The room looked odd and didn't match the interior. That meant the room had been built after the house was purchased.
My guess was right; the room was the CCTV room and no guard was there. The room was empty. I looked in the screens to find where Nikki was, but all the rooms were empty, except one. One small boy was sleeping in a room, a one or one-and-a-half-year-old boy. A woman was sleeping nearby. I thought it must be his caretaker. I scrolled through the cameras, but Nikki or Chase were nowhere to be seen.
Damn, where they can be
. I couldn't guess. I checked the room numbers again. There was no footage for a room on the second floor. I checked again; there was the room entrance, but no camera was fitted inside. It must be Mr. Jordan's room. And it was best for Chase's work. He must be inside with Nikki.
I quickly climbed the stairs. The room was in a corner and it was closed. But I could hear Nikki's voice when I walked to its door.
Nikki was crying hard, and Chase was laughing.
My blood started boiling; if he had hurt Nikki in any way, he would be dead soon.
I kicked the door and it opened with a bang.
Nikki was lying down on the bed, half-naked, and Chase was all over her.
Her hands were tied to the either side of the bed.
Chase was snatching at her bra.
I jumped on Chase and hit him with a kick.
He stumbled on the other side of the bed.
He got up with a gun in his hand, pointing it at me.
Nikki kicked his hand with her leg. I jumped on him again and, this time, I punched his face hard. I sat on his chest, and punched his head again and again. I was going to destroy his damn face.
"Tristan," Nikki cried.
I went back and untied her.
I started punching the douche bag again.
"Come on, Tristan. It's enough. Do you want to kill him?" Nikki was pulling me back.
I looked at Chase's face; it was covered in blood and he was unconscious.
I got up and hugged Nikki.“Did that bastard hurt you, Nikki?"
"No, but he would have if you hadn't stopped him." She was weeping hard and uncontrollably.
I held her near my heart. "Don't worry now, I'm here. Let's go and get your son out of here."
She looked up with surprise in her eyes.“You know about him?"
"Carrie told me about him, and let's go. This is not the time to talk about this." I took out my jacket and wrapped her in it.
"But I don't know where he is," she cried. She was still under in shock from the event. She must be; Chase was abusing her for his own wickedness.
"I know where he is."
She continued sobbing while I took her to the boy's room.
"This is the room."
She got out of my embrace and ran inside the room.
"Stephen, my baby." She cried, and hugged the boy.
"Ma'am, you are here?" The lady with the boy got up and tried to stop Nikki.
"Don't." I pulled that lady back. "Nikki, come on, we have to hurry. Carrie is waiting outside for us."
Nikki was kissing the boy everywhere; her mother's heart was weeping in happiness. I didn't know how long it had been since she’d seen him, but keeping a son away from his mother was the worst thing imaginable.
"Nikki, come on." I grabbed her shoulder and pulled her.
"Stop right there," a male voice echoed in the room.
I turned around in surprise. Nikki's dad, Mr. Jordan, was standing at the door with a gun in his hand.
I moved closer to Nikki. I wasn't going to let anything happen to her.
"I said stop. or I'll kill your boyfriend," he roared.
Nikki turned around, frozen. She hugged me tightly. "Dad, please, let him come with us. He is my son."
"I don't care. He is my grandson and I decide with whom he goes." He came closer to us with the gun pointing at my head. "Now hand him over to me."
Nikki gave Stephen back.
I stood there, speechless; the plan, the charge we’d made for that boy was a complete waste.
"Bastard, I'll kill you all." Chase's voice echoed in the room. He was standing at the door with a gun in his hand.“I'll kill that bitch first." He shot the gun.
Something happened to me and I jumped in front of Nikki. There was no way I could let her die like that. The booming sound of the gunshot echoed; something hit me near my heart and then everything went dark.
Am I dying?
All sounds stopped and I went under the black sheets of eternity.
