Ellie already placed the frame David carried with him in place and he gently hooked Alexandra’s legs around them.  He pulled on surgical gloves and lifted the sheet higher over her legs.  His breath wheezed out through his teeth.  She was already nearly fully dilated.

“Angel, it is nearly over, my love.  He is in quite a rush it seems.  With the next contraction, I want you to push as hard as you can.  Will you do that for me, Angel?”

“Don’t sit there and issue …
aaahhh … orders!  I hate you right now!”

“I hate me too, Angel.  But we can hate me
together, after.  For now … push!  Come on … good!  Relax and with the next one, again push as hard as you can.  Take deep breaths. Angel.  In and out … good … in and out.”

Alexandra listened
to his deep voice and she felt her body relax and she felt calm.  Until the next contraction gripped her.

“One hard and long push, Angel!  Come on … push!  Good.  You are doing so well, my love.  So well.  Okay
, his head is nearly out.  I don’t want you to push with the next contraction, just breathe through it.  Do you hear me, Angel?”

“I am giving birth, Shuttle!  I am not deaf!
Aaahhh!”

Ellie chuckled and tightened her arms around Alexandra’s shoulders.

“Okay Angel, now with the next contraction, I want you to bear down as hard and as long as you can.  Will you do that for me, my love?”

“I am never doing anything for you again!  I
t’s because of doing things for you that I am in pain now. I hope you realize that, Shuttle!  Oohhh … Honey … aaahhh!”

“Now Alexandra … PUSH!”

She held onto Ellie and bore down and leaned into it.  She screamed and cried, her face red with the pressure of bearing down so hard.  Then she felt their son slip easily from her birth canal and she relaxed and leaned back, panting with exertion. Lifting her head and she looked at Paul.  Her tears started to run when she saw him crying uncontrollably.  Then she heard their son’s first cry and she smiled through her tears.

“Elli, come take him.  We still need to get the afterbirth out.”

Ellie wrapped him in a light blanket, placing him carefully in Alexandra’s arms.  Alexandra tried to stop crying to no avail. She tenderly stroked her son’s cheek.

“Hello, Mommy’s little boy.

He stared at her with his baby blue eyes, and their connection was immediate.

“Okay, my heart, just one more push.  Oh Angel … he is so beautiful!  You are so beautiful!”

“Paul Shuttle … you are staring at my vagina that just gave birth and you’re telling me I am beautiful!  Cleary you stopped breathing at some poi …”

“Angel.”

“Yes, my love.”

“I love you very much, Blondie.”

Their eyes met and she smiled tiredly.

“Not as much as I love you, Shuttle.”
