John stared at his cell phone. He had been staring at it for the last ten minutes, trying to decide if he should call Seamus or not. He wanted to. He ached to hear the other man’s voice, even if it was just his answering machine message.

Seamus had left town a week ago and while John was basically trying to ignore the attraction between the two of them, he still wanted to hear the man’s voice or see him in passing in town. Not being able to just catch a glimpse of the man was near to destroying him.

Knowing that Seamus had left town because of him was even worse.
No one had said anything directly to him, but he had seen the looks from Seamus’s family when he ran into them in town. He knew what they were thinking because he was thinking the very same thing.
Seamus had left because he was the world’s biggest idiot. Only the fear of what might happen to Seamus if he gave into his need and tracked the man down, dragging him back to Cade Creek—kicking and screaming if need be—kept John from doing what he wanted to do more than he wanted to do anything in his life.
Until he discovered who was threatening him, Seamus’s life was still in danger.
“Hey, Sheriff.”
John snapped his cell phone shut and closed his hand around it as he glanced up. “Webber.” He wasn’t exactly sure why the man was sliding into his booth. John had come to the diner for lunch, not company. “Is something up?”
“We just got the report in on the Murphy fire. The chief said it was definitely an accelerant.”
“I see.” John slid his cell phone into his pocket and grabbed the file Webber held out to him. “Did the chief say what kind of accelerant?”
“Good ol’ gasoline.”
John flipped the file open and started reading over the fire chief’s report. It seemed pretty clear cut. Someone had doused the place in gasoline and used it to torch the place. The entire building had burned to the ground. The repair shop was a total write-off.
John would have immediately suspected the owners except they were out of town on the night of the fire. They had an iron-clad alibi. That didn’t mean that they couldn’t have paid someone off to burn the place down, however.
John was very suspicious of a fire that burned a business down just as he was investigating the operations of the place. He hadn’t told anyone what he was doing or who he was investigating, but he was getting the distinct impression that someone knew anyway.
He just didn’t think it was Murphy.
He was missing something, and he knew it. There was a link somewhere. There had to be. There was no such thing as the perfect crime. There was always evidence somewhere. John just needed to find it.
He slapped the file closed and grabbed his jacket. “Come on,” he said to Webber as he slid out of the booth. “We’d better get back to the station. I want Mr. Murphy brought in for questioning.”
“Do you think he torched the place?” Webber asked as he slid out of the booth and joined John.
“No, his alibi was airtight. But he might know who did.”
“Insurance scam?”
John shrugged. He tended to play things close to his chest. He didn’t like giving out information before it was time, and he certainly didn’t want anyone to know he had been looking into Murphy’s Auto Repair if they didn’t already.
“Maybe, but I don’t think so. Murphy always seemed to be on the up and up. I just want to find out if anyone has been threatening him or if he’s had any bad business deals lately. A pissed-off customer can do a lot of damage.”
“Murphy’s Auto Repair has been around longer than I have, Sheriff. Do you really think someone could have burned his place down because they were pissed off at him?”
“It could have been teenager with a beef against the old guy, an insurance scam, someone he fired, or just about anything else. We won’t know until we have all of the facts, and to get those facts, we need to question Mr. Murphy.”
Webber was young, but he was smart and eager to learn. It was the only reason that John didn’t roll his eyes at the way his deputy was jumping to conclusions.
“Oh, sorry,” John said when he walked into someone. “Oh, Rourke.” John swallowed hard, suddenly wishing that Webber wasn’t standing here watching him so intently. “How are you?”
“Not too bad, Sheriff,” Rourke said as he shook the hand John held out to him. “How’s the life of the town crime fighter going?”
John chuckled, suddenly feeling at ease in the big man’s presence. Rourke wasn’t going to say anything about the thing going on between him and Seamus, whatever that
thing
was. “Not too bad. How’s the life of a rancher?”
John desperately wanted to ask about Seamus but not in front of Webber. He trusted the deputy to watch his back and give him backup when needed, but he didn’t trust anyone with Seamus’s life.
“Pretty damn good.” Rourke grinned broadly, showing off the deep dimples in his cheeks. “Now, if I could get Billy to stop making me go to his quilting club get-togethers, I’d be perfect.”
John chuckled. “Sewing not your thing?”
“Oh, hell no.”
“He loves it, and you know it. That’s why you go.” Despite Rourke’s rough demeanor, he was putty in the hands of Billy. John didn’t think there wasn’t much that the larger man wasn’t willing to do for his husband, even go to a quilting club.
“Yeah, he does.” Rourke’s grin just grew bigger as if talking about Billy was the brightest spot in his day. “You should come out to the ranch one of these Sundays and have dinner with us. I know you love Ma’s cooking.”
“That isn’t saying much, Rourke. Everyone in Cade Creek loves your ma’s cooking.”
Rourke winked at John. “Seamus will be there.”
John gulped, shooting a look at Webber, hoping the deputy didn’t know how much he wanted to accept the invitation. “Yeah, maybe I’ll do that if I can close this case I’m working on.” John waved the file at Rourke. “In fact, I really need to get to it.”
“Oh, yeah, sure.” Rourke’s green eyes darted between John and Webber. “Just give us a call. We all go home for dinner every Sunday. You’re welcome anytime.”
“Thanks, Rourke.” John plastered a smile on his face that he definitely wasn’t feeling. “I just might do that. It would be good to see your folks again.”
“Yeah.” Rourke smiled, but John could see the confusion in the man’s eyes. The man obviously knew something was up, but he apparently caught on to John’s hesitation about bringing Seamus into the conversation. “Ma and Da would love to see you, too.”
John waved to Rourke as the man started down the sidewalk again then turned and continued toward the sheriff’s station. Webber instantly fell into step beside him.
“Do you know the Blaecleahs well, Sheriff?”
“Well enough, I suppose.” John tried to play it off, acting nonchalant. “I’ve been called out to the ranch a few times back when they had some trouble. Mrs. Blaecleah was nice enough to cook me dinner to thank me, and I wasn’t lying when I said that woman could cook.”
“I’ve never really spent any time with any of the Blaecleahs other than at church functions. All of the brothers are older than me, so we missed each other in school. But they seem nice enough.”
“Yeah, they’re all pretty nice. I’ll introduce you at the next church potluck.”
“That would be great, Sheriff.” Webber grinned, which was an odd look on the young man’s face. John couldn’t tell if Webber wanted to shout hallelujah or start bouncing with excitement.
John suddenly wondered if Webber had ulterior motives in getting introduced to the Blaecleahs. There was only one Blaecleah brother left that was single, and John had his sights on him. He wasn’t about to bring another man into the mix.
“You do know that the Blaecleahs are all pretty much taken, right?”
“Not Seamus.”
“True,” John spit out through teeth gritted by jealousy. “But he moved out of town.”
“Ah, he’ll be back,” Webber replied. “They always come back.”
John certainly hoped so. He really didn’t want to go to the city and drag Seamus back. But he would if he had to. Once this shit with the threats were over, Seamus Blaecleah was coming home, one way or another.
“Go get Murphy and bring him in for questioning,” John said when they reached the station. “Do not tell him why we want to speak to him or that we got the fire chief’s report back. Just tell him we have some questions and we’re hoping that he can help us with our investigation.”
“Will do, Sheriff.”
John laughed as Webber took off. The guy was young, but he had a lot of enthusiasm for the job. If he kept going at this rate, John suspected Webber would be taking over his job one of these days.
John walked into the station, stopping briefly at the front desk to grab his messages before making his way to his office. He tossed his messages and the fire chief’s report down on his desk then went to check in with the dispatcher.
“Any calls, Marc?” John asked as he perched his hip on the side of the dispatch desk.
“No, sir,” the deputy replied. Marc Walker wasn’t a full-fledged deputy yet, but he would be in another couple of months when he finished his training. In the meantime, he manned dispatch when Webber was out of the office. It was good training for the future deputy.
“Call me if anything comes in. I’ll be in my office waiting for Webber to return with Mr. Murphy.”
Marc grinned. “Ten-four, Sheriff.”
John chuckled as he scooted off the desk and walked back to his office. He sat down behind his desk and opened the Murphy fire file again, reading over the report one more time. He wanted to have all of his facts straight before he started questioning Mr. Murphy.
John didn’t know how long he had been sitting there when he heard his phone buzz. He reached over and grabbed it. “Sheriff Riley.”
“Hey, Sheriff, this is Webber. I’m out here at the Murphy place, but no one is here. The place looks deserted.”
“Damn.” John rubbed his hand down over his face, sighing deeply. “Okay, come on back to the station. I’ll put an APB out on Murphy.”
“Okay, see you soon, Sheriff.”
“Yeah.” John hung up the phone and got up, walking to his office door. “Marc, I want an APB put out on Ezra Murphy. I want him brought in for questioning in connection with the fire at his auto repair shop.”
“Will do, Sheriff.”
John nodded and went back into his office.
There were days when this job really sucked.

Chapter 6

Yancy could feel someone watching him before he even opened his eyes. His years of being a police detective had him sniffing the air for just a second before Seamus’s rich masculine scent reached him.

A welcoming smile started to stretch across his lips as he opened his eyes. Yancy would be the first to admit that he was a little surprised to find Seamus stretched out on the bed next to him. Except for that spectacular blow job in the shower, the man hardly ever made the first move with him.

Yancy wasn’t surprised to see the turmoil swirling in Seamus’s deep-emerald eyes. It seemed to always be there. Only on a few rare occasions had Yancy seen Seamus’s eyes sparkle with delight.

“Hey,” he whispered softly as to not break whatever euphoric bubble they were floating in.
“Hey,” Seamus whispered right back.
“Are you okay, honey?”
Seamus’s eyes darted away for a moment, the man licking his lips as if they had suddenly gone dry. He was nervous. Yancy could see it, and his heart started to drop. Was Seamus here to tell him good-bye?
Yancy wasn’t sure he could handle that.
“Do you still want me?”
Shock held Yancy immobile for a moment. How could Seamus doubt that? “Yes,” he said simply instead of screaming and yelling like he wanted to. He wanted Seamus more than he wanted to see the sun come up the next morning.
“Then I’m yours.”
Elation shot through Yancy like a thunderstorm. He started to reach for Seamus when reality slapped him across the face with a resounding, but silent, thud. Earlier, Seamus hadn’t seemed to know what he wanted, and now he did? What was with the sudden aboutface?
“What about John?” He hated that name.
Seamus lifted his eyes until they met Yancy’s. “I’m not going to lie to you, Yancy. I still have feelings for John. But I have feelings for you, too.” Seamus drew in a deep breath as if there wasn’t enough air in his lungs. “And I’m starting to think that my feelings for John were all one sided, that maybe I saw what I wanted to see.”
“And that means what?” Yancy wanted all of the cards laid out on the table. He was fine with Seamus wanting to take things slow, but if the guy was giving him the green light, he wanted to know Seamus really meant it before he allowed the man to have his heart.
“That means that if you still want me, I’m willing to put John in my past and give everything to this relationship with you.”
Yancy allowed himself to reach for Seamus this time, pulling the man close, feeling the building need inside of him growing stronger. “Promise me that you won’t break my heart, Seamus. Promise that you will always be mine.”
“I promise,” Seamus said on a whispered groan as he pressed his heated body against Yancy.
He knew in his heart that Seamus meant what he said, but Yancy also knew that he only had half of the man, the sheriff owning the other half. All he could do was try to make Seamus forget the sheriff and hope that in time he could have all of Seamus’s love.
Yancy ran his rough hand down the side of the man’s body, cupping Seamus’s ass and bringing him closer. He loved the fact that Seamus was totally naked. It made getting to the man’s sweet body that much easier.
“Do you know how long I’ve wanted to touch you?”
Seamus gave him an impish smile. “Since you first laid eyes on me?”
Yancy lightly smacked Seamus’s ass. “No need to be so smug.”
Brilliant spectrums of light danced in Seamus’s eyes. “I’m not being smug.”
Tugging at his lover, Yancy pulled until he had Seamus draped over his body. His cock was hard and heated as Seamus sat atop him. The man looked like a fallen angel as he smiled down at Yancy.
He could see himself loving this man until the end of time. Seamus was so damn beautiful, inside and out. His lips parted on a groan when Seamus dipped his head and began to suckle at Yancy’s peaked nipple. His hands ran over his lover’s hair, pulling at the strands, hissing and moaning as Seamus gently bit down on his sensitive flesh.
Yancy arched his back, his hands gliding over the man’s smooth skin, smiling when the man began to squirm under his touch. His fingernails raked Seamus’s tender flesh. “That’s it, honey, taste me.”
He gritted his teeth against the sensations as he braced his body, Seamus grinding his cock against Yancy’s stomach. If the guy only knew how much control he stole from Yancy. He fought to breathe as he watched Seamus lick his way across Yancy’s chest, nibbling and sucking, moaning out his pleasure.
Yancy fought not to throw Seamus under him and take him. Seamus wasn’t a one-night stand, nor was he a casual affair. He was it for Yancy. He knew in his heart that there would be no other.
“So big,” Seamus said against Yancy’s chest as he used his teeth to take a light bite out of him. “So strong.”
The hunger he felt for this guy was driving him to the edge of madness and beyond. Yancy wasn’t sure how much longer he could just lay there and let Seamus have his way. “I want to take you slow.” He could barely push the words from his lips for the sheer pleasure enveloping him.
Yancy’s body felt like liquid fire, tight and hard. He gnashed his teeth together when Seamus began to kiss him lower and lower, his tongue tracing Yancy’s navel. When Seamus glanced up at him from under his lashes, Yancy was nearly destroyed.
He had fallen in love with Seamus.
His fingers tangled in his lover’s hair as Seamus nipped his pelvis bone right before he licked a long path up Yancy’s cock and then sucked the swollen head into his mouth.
“Fuck!” Yancy shouted as his hips bucked. Yancy tried to control himself, tried not to move as Seamus suckled him, but his body wouldn’t listen. His hips thrust forward as his grip tightened on Seamus’s hair.
As much as he was enjoying the man’s mouth, Yancy didn’t want to come this way. He wanted to be buried deep inside Seamus’s body when his climax roared through him.
“Seamus, enough.” Yancy tugged at Seamus’s dark-chocolatebrown strands. “Not like this.”
He damn near came when Seamus pulled back, licking his swollen lips as he smiled at Yancy. The smile was mischievous, flirtatious, and tempting. Seamus was going to be his undoing. He could feel it down to his very bones.
Yancy began to pant when Seamus crawled back up his body and placed a gentle kiss at his throat. “Then how do you want to come?”
“In–inside you.” He gripped Seamus’s hips, grinding his aching erection against the man’s ass. “Ride me, honey.”
Reaching under his pillow, Yancy grabbed the lube. He started to pour some on his fingers, but Seamus snatched the tube away. “Want to watch me stretch my own ass?”
Yancy damn near swallowed his tongue. The only thing he could do was nod. He was no longer capable of speaking as Seamus turned around, presenting Yancy with his tight ass.
Oh, lord.
How he didn’t attack the man was anyone’s guess.
“Just watch,” Seamus whispered as he reached behind himself and circled his hole, making it glisten with lube. “Watch me pleasure myself.”
Yancy let out a strangled sound as he curled his fingers into the mattress, preventing himself from touching. “Go ahead.”
Never having made love to Seamus, he wasn’t sure if the moans were for real or for show, but regardless, the sounds were so damn erotic that Yancy had to bite his bottom lip. Seamus’s ass moved higher into the air as his wet fingers slipped inside his body, his small hole stretching.
Yancy swallowed hard, knowing he wasn’t going to be able to hold out much longer. As Seamus wiggled his ass and speared his fingers inside himself, Yancy reached up and smoothed his hands over Seamus’s twin globes. “So pretty.”
“Help me,” Seamus said in a straining tone. Yancy was more than happy to help the man out. He slipped a finger in alongside Seamus’s and then grunted loudly when the man swallowed Yancy’s cock.
He pulled all the way out and pushed back in, fucking Seamus with his fingers for a few strokes. Yancy damn near begged when Seamus let his cock slip from between the man’s lips. But his protest fell silent on his lips when Seamus turned, positioning himself over Yancy’s steel-hard shaft.
“Are you ready?” Seamus damn near purred the words.
Yancy was totally and utterly fascinated with the smaller man. He had been joking when he told Seamus that he would make a good wife. Now Yancy was beginning to wonder if his subconscious wasn’t speaking for him.
The tip of his swollen shaft pressed against Seamus body, pre-cum almost shooting out as his lover began to slowly lower himself onto Yancy’s cock.
“Seamus,” he moaned, his fingers digging into Seamus’s hips. “Oh, hell, Seamus.”
Seamus leaned forward, his fingernails digging into Yancy’s chest as he let out a long hiss.
“Take your time, honey. Take all the time you need.” Yancy said the words, meaning them, even though he wanted to thrust up into Seamus’s ass more than he wanted to breathe. His lover smiled down at Yancy before nipping his throat.
“Gods, you feel so damn good buried in my ass.” Seamus swiveled his hips, dropping down onto Yancy’s cock over and over again. Yancy was coming unglued, falling apart at the seams as Seamus took what he wanted, what he needed. When his body raised to a fevered pitch, Yancy kept a tight hold on Seamus as he flipped them, placing his lover underneath him.
“What happened to me riding you?” Seamus teased in a deep and raspy tone. He was breathless, his green eyes sparkling as he raked his fingers over Yancy’s bare back. The man wrapped his legs around Yancy’s waist, driving Yancy’s cock deeper into his body.
Yancy lean forward, pressing his lips to the soft shell of Seamus’s ear. “I’m going to fuck you senseless.”
“Yes!”
Rearing back, Yancy shoved Seamus’s legs out of the way as he began to hammer into Seamus’s tight hole. Small explosions ignited inside of him as his balls drew up tight against his body, signaling that his release was close.
Seamus thrashed around, screaming Yancy’s name.
“Again. Scream for me again, honey.” Yancy backed up his words with hard and demanding thrusts. No matter how deep he sank, Yancy couldn’t seem to get close enough. He felt as though madness was taking over, clawing at him, threatening to take him under.
“Yancy!” Seamus shouted as he wrapped his fingers around his cock and began to feverishly stroke himself. “Make me come.”
“Whatever you want, honey.” Yancy doubled his efforts, grabbing Seamus’s ankles and pulling the man’s legs apart as he pounded into Seamus’s soft and giving flesh.
Seamus arched his back, crying out as white ribbons shot from the tip of his cock, painting his chest and chin with his release. Yancy gritted his teeth, Seamus’s tight hole mercilessly milking his cock.
“Goddamn!” he shouted as a cascade of electricity ignited inside of him, burning him alive with fevered passion as his orgasm slammed into him, making it hard for Yancy to breathe. Seamus’s arms fell to his side as he pulled in ragged breaths.
Yancy’s thrusts slowed as he rode out the lingering climax. He was sweating, breathless, and wanted a damn nap. Pulling from his lover’s body, Yancy stretched out next to Seamus, pulling the man close to his chest.
“Green light,” Seamus teased as his eyelids fluttered closed.
Yancy chuckled as he smoothed his hand down Seamus’s sweatsoaked body. “I sure as hell hope so.”
Seamus was everything that Yancy had hoped for and more, but he couldn’t dispel the niggling in the back of his mind that the sheriff was going to somehow steal Yancy’s happiness, that the man was going to take Seamus away from him.
