 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
43
 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44
 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
45
 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.
46
 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
47
 For so hath the Lord commanded us,
saying,
I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
48
 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
49
 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.
50
 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
51
 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
52
 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.
14:
1
 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
2
 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
3
 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
4
 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.
5
 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use
them
despitefully, and to stone them,
6
 they were ware of
it,
and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:
7
 and there they preached the gospel.

, thou hast searched me, and known
me.

 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted

, thou knowest it altogether.

 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

Such
knowledge
is
too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot
attain
unto it.

 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

 If I ascend up into heaven, thou
art
there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou
art there.

If
I take the wings of the morning,
and
dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light
are
both alike
to thee.

 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully
and
wonderfully made: marvellous
are
thy works; and
that
my soul knoweth right well.
15
 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret,
and
curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16
 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all
my members
were written,
which
in continuance were fashioned, when
as yet there was
none of them.

 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

If
I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
19
 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

 For they speak against thee wickedly,
and
thine enemies take
thy name
in vain.

 Do not I hate them, O L
ORD
, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22
 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24
 And see if
there be any
wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

 He loveth transgression that loveth strife:
and
he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20
 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

 He that begetteth a fool
doeth it
to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

 And he wrought evil in the sight of the L
ORD
; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
3
 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4
 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
5
 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6
 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
7
 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle?
And he said, I will go up: I
am
as thou
art,
my people as thy people,
and
my horses as thy horses.
8
 And he said, Which way shall we go up?
And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
9
 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
10
 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the L
ORD
hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
11
 But Jehoshaphat said,
Is there
not here a prophet of the L
ORD
, that we may inquire of the L
ORD
by him?
And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here
is
Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12
 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the L
ORD
is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13
 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.
And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the L
ORD
hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14
 And Elisha said,
As
the L
ORD
of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15
 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the L
ORD
came upon him.
16
 And he said, Thus saith the L
ORD
, Make this valley full of ditches.
17
 For thus saith the L
ORD
, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18
 And this is
but
a light thing in the sight of the L
ORD
: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
19
 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
20
 And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21
 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
22
 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side
as
red as blood:
23
 and they said, This
is
blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.
24
 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in
their
country.
25
 And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about
it,
and smote it.
26
 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through
even
unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
27
 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him
for
a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to
their own
land.
4:
1
 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the L
ORD
: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.
2
 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
3
 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours,
even
empty vessels; borrow not a few.
4
 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
5
 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought
the vessels
to her; and she poured out.
6
 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel.
And he said unto her,
There is
not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
7
 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
8
 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where
was
a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And
so
it was,
that
as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
9
 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this
is
an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
10
 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
11
 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.
12
 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.
13
 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what
is
to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host?
And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.
14
 And he said, What then
is
to be done for her?
And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.
15
 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.
16
 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.
And she said, Nay, my lord,
thou
man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.
17
 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
