Janet nodded. ‘She didn't like to throw it out just in case. I can still ask her to be my bridesmaid.'
He laughed and held her tight. ‘Will she still fit into it?'
‘I think it's a bit old fashioned by now, don't you?' Tears began to run down her cheeks. ‘It's a bit like turning the clock back, us getting married, with a small baby to look after.'
Mark swallowed hard. ‘I've been such a fool. I missed out on Paula but we've got Janie and I promise you she'll have a wonderful life with plenty of love.'
Janet smiled through her tears. ‘Paula would have liked that.'
‘We've got a lot of years to make up.'
Janet knew that in the years to come Janie would know all about her mother and who her father was. But in many ways Janet would be pleased to be out of the country! Trevor wouldn't be able to reach them in Canada and as a family they could now legally adopt Janie.
She smiled at Mark and once again she was in his arms and being kissed. She knew her daughter would have been happy with this arrangement.

Tina, with Danny close behind, was watching them through the kitchen window.
‘That ain't no goodbye kiss,' said Danny.
Tina, who was holding Janie, said, ‘Looks like you and your nanny could be going to Canada.'
Danny put his arm round his wife. ‘It's taken them both a bloody long while to come to their senses.'
‘I know they're going to be happy together,' said Tina.
‘They deserve it.' Danny walked away. He didn't want the children to see his tears.
