CHAPTER
13

I rolled over and pushed Sasha’s hair back from her face. “Didn’t mean for us to have sex out here in the open.”

She smiled and kissed my arm. “I liked it. Maybe we can make this a tradition.”

“I’m game.” If I’d have come even remotely prepared, I would have cuddled her against me and covered us with a blanket or two and slept out here under the stars.

B
ut I hadn’t brought a damn thing. I’d only been thinking about dinner and making her happy—or at least to forget all the stuff about her mom for a few hours. I’d managed both, but now we had to return to the real world and leave our sanctuary.

That I already considered it to be a safe space reaffirmed the crazy whi
rlwind way I’d bought it.

“Should we head home?”

She frowned. “I guess. But can we come back again?”

I kissed the tip of her nose and helped her stand. “Anytime.” I glanced up at the hole in the patio awning. “But we’d better come up with a plan of what you want to do to this place before it falls down around our ears.”

She quickly dressed and started rattling off ideas.

I laughed.

“What? You can’t expect to buy me a house and not have me instantly think about what I’d do to it.”

I scooped her up and twirled her slowly. “
You’re the best, babe. I always think I’m too much for you, especially when I do crazy things like this without consulting you—”

“I wasn’t really in a consulting
mood there for a while.”

I grinned and set her down, then walked us to the car. “No, but even so.”

She squeezed my hand and made me look at her. “We can do this. No regrets. The past is gone.”

I swallowed as emotion flooded my lungs and stopped me from breathing.
We’d come through so much and now we were taking on even more. I loved her so much and I couldn’t even tell her. I smiled and pulled her close as a thousand new songs sparked off in my mind. I could write an entire record about tonight and what she makes me feel.

We strolled slowly back to the car and I tucked her safely inside and walked around to the front. With one glance back at the darkened, hulking shell of the house, I slid in the car just as my phone rang.

I eased back down the driveway, a little sketchy now that night had fallen, but still passable. “I don’t want you coming up here without me.”

She turned in
her seat. “I’m pregnant, not an invalid.”

I
pulled her hand to my lips and kissed the back of it. “I know, babe, but there’s a lot of safety stuff that needs to be done.” I eased around a giant rock in the road. “Like this. I don’t want you banging up the car or getting stuck.”

She lifted an eyebrow.

“I get to be overprotective.”

She chuckled and leaned her head back against the seat and stared into the falling night. “Okay.”

“Thanks.” My phone rang again and I fished it out of my pocket as I pulled to the edge of the main road. Traffic and lumbering semis filled the street so I had a second to check the readout. “It’s Scout.” I hadn’t told Sasha anything about the issues with him today and didn’t see any reason to ruin our night about it now.

“You can get it,
Jesse. I know you guys have a ton of work to do while you’re home.” She tucked her feet up under her butt and curled into a little ball on the seat. I never understood how she could do that and still be comfortable. “And I feel bad about having a melt down and making you leave early.”

“It’s fine. I’ll talk to him in the morning.”
I leaned over and kissed her. “And don’t apologize for having a bad day. I’m glad you called me. I want to be the one you call first.” I cupped the back of her head and kissed her forehead. “Besides, that turned into tonight, and it was pretty dang amazing”

Sasha smiled up at me and my heart expanded until I thought there might not be room enough for it in the car. She settled her hand on my cheek. “Then I’m glad too.”

I
tossed my phone into the cup holder and pulled onto the street. But I didn’t see the giant pothole at the edge of the driveway. The glove box fell open, my phone bounced out of the cup holder and Sasha sat up straight, pulling her seatbelt tight across her chest.

“Dammit.” I leaned over and felt around for my phone as it started to ring again. I needed to at least turn it to vibrate if he was going to bug me all night.

“Jesse!” Sasha gripped my arm and screamed as a crunch of metal and glass deafened me.
