Suddenly, the front door busted open and men in dark camouflage gear came rushing into the apartment yelling, “Hands behind your head! Do it now!”

Her emotions quickly turned into fear as she reacted to their commands. Within seconds one of them was behind her patting her down while another was picking up the letter Jonathan had written.

“Check the rest of the apartment,” the man frisking her ordered.

“What's all this about?” she asked.

“No talking!” he ordered.

“It's all clear, sir,” another soldier said coming out of the bedroom.

“Sarah Langston. You are under arrest for aiding and bedding an illegal citizen from Canada,” he said, grabbing the letter as evidence.

“What are you talking about?” she asked.
Jonathan is illegally living in this country? Was he telling me the truth?

That's when they cuffed her and led her out of the apartment. She had no idea where they were taking her.

Chapter 12

As Sarah sat there in her chair in the dark room they had brought her into
at Edwards Air Force Base, she couldn't stop thinking about Jonathan and how angry she was with him. She understood his reason for lying but she couldn't bring herself to forgive him at the moment.

Was he really an alien from another planet or was he a fugitive on the run from Canada? Was he really from Canada? Was his name really Jonathan Wolf?

When she arrived they told her to change into a pair of what looked like orange prison clothes; just like inmates wore. Of course, she felt like a prisoner herself while still in handcuffs.

When the door to the room finally opened the light coming in from the hallway nearly blinded her. Then the overhead fluorescent light came on and it took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust.

“Ms. Langston?” a man in an Air Force uniform said. He walked over to Sarah and sat down at the table in front of her. “My name is Colonel Dickens. As I'm sure you've been told already you've been placed under arrest for harboring an illegal alien in this country.”

“I thought he was a fugitive,” she said.

“That's our cover story in case the press get wind of this,” he said and then took out the letter and placed it on the table. “Is this Jonathan's handwriting on the letter?”

“Yes.”
So Jonathan wasn’t lying about his name.

“How long have you two been together?”

“Nine months.”

“Have you two been intimate?”

“I wish to speak to my father,” she insisted.

“Your father is not a part of this interrogation.”

“I don't care! I want to speak to him!” she cried out.

“That's not going to happen,” Dickens said remaining calm.

“Then where is Jonathan?”

“It's obvious from this letter that he lied to you about who he was. Or perhaps was this some sort of encrypted code? Maybe you already knew who he was and you're just protecting him.”

“I didn't know he was an alien from another planet if that what's you mean.”

“Well, there's only one sure way to find out what you do know,” he said and turned to the guard standing at the door and nodded who walked over to her.

He grabbed her arm and took out a syringe.

“No! Please don't! I'm telling you the truth! I don't know anything!” She yelled as he stuck the needle in through her skin. Suddenly, she started to feel a little drowsy like she had just gotten drunk.

“Now, let's start from the beginning,” Dickens said.

***

Deep within the confines of the military base, the room Jonathan was imprisoned in was fairly large with an overhead fluorescent light shining down upon him and a single metal door with a basketball sized window to look out of. Next to it was a security pad lock along with a retinal scanner. His arms were suspended in the air by two metal spheres that covered his hands and his feet were bounded to the floor by chains, he could hardly move. He was wearing only his jeans and was barefoot with no shirt on

Wolf knew he did not get here by accident.

He decided to turn himself over to government officials when he finally realized that they were keeping a close eye on him shortly after he met Justin. For months it seemed they were and he knew they were getting ready to make their move and arrest him. That is when he decided that in order to protect Sarah he must turn himself in. So he wrote a letter to Sarah telling her who he was but not giving away the details knowing government and military officials would read it.

He was confident that Colonel Caldwell was true to his word by not revealing Wolf’s true identity to anyone outside of his command.

Wolf sighed knowing he had messed things up. His mission here on Earth was going as planned at first. It was simple. Observe the evolutionary process of the people on this planet and report back to the Oracle. He wasn’t to get emotionally involved with anyone while staying here. That, of course, all changed when he met Sarah who had a kindness and spark to her that drew him in like a magnet. He couldn't resist her charm. After he introduced himself they fell in love almost immediately.

He wasn’t as concerned for his life much now as much as he was for Sarah’s. He could feel her close by and sense that she was in pain. His heightened sense of awareness gave him that ability.

Suddenly, the door to the room opened and two guards walked in carrying someone he had not hoped to see. It was Sarah, barefoot and wearing what resembled an orange prison outfit. She looked weak and pale as they dragged her over to a corner in the room and then walked up to Wolf and stood there without saying a word. Sarah was sitting up with her arms wrapped around her leg and her head buried.

Unfortunately, the government did not keep its end of the deal when he asked them to leave Sarah alone in exchange for turning himself in. They knew Jonathan and Sarah were living together.

A few moments later Colonel Dickens walked in. Wolf could tell from the expression on his face that his attitude of being an egotistical bastard had not changed.

“I hope I’ve given you ample time to think about the questions I asked you earlier,” he said walking up to Wolf with his hands behind his back. He had interrogated him earlier without much success. “Now I’ll ask again. Who are you and where do you come from?” His voice was stern a direct.

Wolf refused to answer him once again.

“Sergeant?” he said looking at the guard on his left who walked up to Wolf and hit him in the face with the butt of his M-16 rifle. Wolf could feel the pain but he could take it as a drop of blood trickled down his forehead.

“I’ve searched our records and until three years ago you didn’t exist which leads me to assume that you’re not from this world. I believe you are an alien. So what are you doing here on Earth Mr. Wolf? If that is your real name. Are you on some kind of reconnaissance mission so you can invade this planet?”

“No,” Wolf answered with his voice sounding a little hoarse.

“I don’t believe you,” he said.

“I don’t care what you believe.”

“You know what I find amazing Mr. Wolf? You fall in love with a girl whose father just happens to be a military General.”

“I had no idea. It was just a coincidence.”

“You call that a coincidence? Granted I don’t like General Langston very much but I think you’re using her to gather valuable strategic information on our military. That is something I cannot allow.”

“That is so typical of you.”

“What is?”

“You are so narrow-minded and paranoid that all you think about is military strategy. You really think that if I was here on a reconnaissance mission, an invasion would’ve happened by now? Not everyone in the universe is out to destroy you.”

“So you admit there are alien races out there that we should consider a threat?”

“What have you done to Sarah?” Wolf asked deciding not to answer his question. He briefly glanced over at Sarah noticing that she was not well.

“We interrogated her. After all she was living with a supposed alien, that’s you, for the past nine months. At first we thought she was covering for you by lying to us about not knowing you. Surprisingly she had no idea who you really were until she read that letter you wrote,” he said.

“It looks you did more than just interrogate,” he said with bitterness in his voice.

“We have methods that many in this country consider inhumane but have proven useful in interrogations. Unfortunately, as you and I have found out together they haven’t worked for you so far. Now if you’ll excuse me I have some business to attend to for a moment. I’ll leave you and your girlfriend alone to talk,” he said and left the room with the two guards following behind him.

Sarah and Jonathan were now alone. He knew they had monitoring devices hidden somewhere in the room but he had to talk to Sarah without revealing too much about himself for the Colonel’s benefit.

“Sarah, are you alright?” Wolf asked her calmly.

At first she refused to speak. She just stared into space as if her thoughts were elsewhere.

“I’m sorry. I should’ve told you the truth about me,” he said lowering his head in guilt.

“Why? Why didn’t you tell me the truth when we first met?” she finally asked.

“I… I was afraid if I did that…?”

“That what…? I would never speak to you again and that I wouldn’t look at you the same way anymore?” she said raising the tone in her voice.

“Yes,” he said keeping his voice low and calm.

“Well it worked,” she said never once looking over at him.

“But I also did it to protect you.”

“Yeah, look how that turned out,” she snorted.

“Whatever happens, know this. I will always love you. You have to believe me. I’m going to get you out of here.”

Just then the door opened and the Colonel walked back in.

“We have a problem,” he said.

“What is it? You can’t find your shoe polish?” Wolf said sarcastically.

“You’re a funny man Mr. Wolf,” the Colonel said without smiling. “Actually this problem resides in San Francisco. Someone is creating fear and causing destruction in the city. We believe it to be a man who seems to be able to shoot electricity from his hands. His body can also dematerialize into any electrical wiring that can hold electricity. Many people have died,” he said.

“Why don’t you just shoot him?” Wolf asked.

“We’ve tried but he seems to be wearing some kind of advanced Kevlar suit of armor. Plus, the electricity he releases melts the bullets before they reach him.”

“So what do you want from me?”

He showed Wolf a photo of someone dressed all in black with a Kevlar body suit. His face was covered by some kind of reflective black visor with a hood to cover his head and a cape that seemed to be torn up across the bottom.

The Colonel then asked, “One of yours? He’s calling himself Shadowgate.”

Wolf started to laugh. This guy just wouldn’t quit. Guilty until proven innocent was his motto it seemed.

“Sorry but I work alone. If he were with me I would’ve been rescued already,” Wolf said.

“I see. So you don’t know who this guy is?” the Colonel asked.

“No,” Wolf said with honesty.

Then it dawned on the Lyran. This was the opportunity he had to get out of here if he told the Colonel he could stop this cloaked menace.

It was true.

Wolf could stop him but then he would be disobeying the orders given to him by the Oracle. He knew the Colonel wouldn’t let him just walk away quietly. He would keep him chained up. He had to say something to earn his trust so he would release him in time for him and Sarah to escape.

“Colonel if you let me go I can stop him,” Wolf said.

It was his turn to laugh which wasn’t unexpected.

“You can stop him? All I see is a human looking alien in front of me with no special powers.”

“That’s because I haven’t shown you what I’m capable of.”

“What are you capable of?”

“Do you want to argue or put more lives at risk?” Wolf asked seriously looking at him square in the eyes.

“You’re not giving me much of choice here Jonathan.”

“I don’t intend to give you one.”

“Alright. I’ll release you,” he sighed and then said, “but I’ve got my eye on you.”

Wolf nodded his head to reassure him of his understanding. Quickly observing the weapons each guard was carrying, which included a side arm and an M-16, he mentally prepared himself to disarm them once he was released. That’s when one of the guards stepped forward and pressed a button on the console in front of him to release the restraints on his hands. He then kneeled down and unlocked the chains that were holding Wolf’s feet.

At first, Wolf didn’t want to hurt anyone but the way these men had treated Sarah forced him to act aggressively out of anger.

As soon as the guard stood up and reached his hand out, Wolf quickly grabbed him, turned him around and pulled out his side pistol and shot the other guard in the chest who fell to the ground. He then pointed it at the head of the guard he was holding and said, “Drop the M-16 now.”
